  • The Daily Mess Today You'll Be You

    December 14, 2022

Today you’ll be you. Is there such a thing as I feel it in my bones? An ancient premonition or warning first appearing in a Shakespearean production. Here in the south we say, “It’s cold to the bone.” Meaning that’s pretty cold. Do our bones know? Do they serve as receivers of a message taken as we transition through life? Intuition versus actuality. Those who’ve said, “I love you to the bone.” What if it breaks? Will there be physical therapy? We rely so much on our feelings. Which invites another body part into the picture. I’ve got this gut feeling. The body takes in so much and is often accused of even more. It’s enough to make your brain hurt.

  • Raina Kelley Releases Black Told

“Black means more than resistance.  It also means every single other thing that you bring to it”, according to Andscape Editor in Chief, Raina Kelley. This philosophy sets the tone for the new essay collection by Black media platform, Andscape, BLACKTOLD. Bringing together diverse voices in a remarkable collection drawn from the Andscape website, BLACKTOLD, chronicles our times in searing eloquence, from Black culture pre-George Floyd to the racial reckoning America faces today.  Highly relevant and resonant topics of social justice, the BLM movement, race and the NFL, the pandemic, the 2021 election, and sports icons—presented with honesty and hopefulness by acclaimed journalists—perfectly capture this critical moment in time.

Kelley reminds readers that this essay collection is a multi-purpose map, serving as a guide through a time when the truth is stranger than fiction. With a solemn reminder to readers of the diaspora that their lives depend on their awareness, BLACKTOLD is dynamic and disarming from start to finish.

The essays in BLACKTOLD stand together as a portrait of what was Before and how we got to Now.  Essential pieces, chronicled in chapters on Black Lives Matter, American History, Arts & Culture, and Sports, evoke a range of feelings from sorrow and anger and never stop.  Still, there are stories that remind readers that it is essential to reflect and catch a breath of fresh air even as they reverberate with a keen message:  authentic representation matters.

  • The Daily Mess The Impact Of Avatar

It's moving too quickly. The original Avatar from James Cameron made its way into theaters in 2009. We attended a special screen of the sequel last night. It's 2022! I'm sure I wrote about it in 2009! It's what I do. 2009 was the year Barak Obama was inaugurated as President of the United States. It's also the year we lost Michael Jackson. Such sharp events in history don't appear then disappear. We have to learn how to move through the storms. When you pull the lens back to view the past 13 years between the two Avatars a lot has taken place. We should be grateful for our continued presence. So much has been learned. Mindfully we remain present. Let us all grow forward knowing we have no control over time.

  • Morgan Taylor From NBC's The Voice

When Morgan was 13, she began posting her singing covers on Instagram and now has over 80,000 followers. She grew up as the only musical member of her family, singing along to "The Little Mermaid" and other Disney movies before she could talk. Morgan began suffering from anxiety when she was just a kid. Her depression and anxiety often got the best of her and the only way for her to refocus her mind was music. Getting accepted into Belmont College was what she needed to turn her life around. Whenever she's not writing, recording or performing, you can find her taking care of plants, drinking coffee or hanging out with friends and family.
