What is your greatest fear? What if it became your reality? Have you ever been overwhelmed? Often when that happens there is a natural tendency to remove ourselves from those situations so that the tension, anxiety, and constant discomfort, either physical or mental is more than we can bear. For some, these circumstances could lead one away from God for good, while in others it relentlessly pushes them into His arms. Often, when life gets too hard to stand, we have to kneel and surrender all trusting in God’s providence in faith believing He can take what the world would say is a tragedy and turn it into triumph. An unborn baby with a disability becomes God’s instrument to draw his father, immediate family, and an entire Catholic high school community into union with Himself.

Art of Suffering Show Notes - Episode 9

Fran Hampton was your average everyday American teenager in the mid 1970’s. Dating a high school sweetheart and being in love she suddenly found herself pregnant. With the advent of the 1973 Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade she had an option not available to other women only a few years earlier to choose abortion. A devout Catholic and supported by family, she chose the path less traveled and carried her unborn child to birth and offered him to be adopted. Some thirty years later, providence, prayer, and the Hand of God brought mother and son back together and help mend wounds and inner doubts for mother and son after the decision to let him have a better life with another family. Adoption, the forgotten option, is a story of immeasurable love displayed by a mother that during an unexpected pregnancy puts her child’s needs above her own.

Statistics from 2019 indicate that 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s or a form of dementia. Psychological test show that primary care givers, because of the constant mental and physical strain on their person, have a much higher tendency to develop general anxiety disorder or depression. This act of self-sacrificial love united to the cross of Christ can have immense redemptive value for those who embrace this opportunity and for others who witness it. John Listi, the Director of Parish Renewal and Evangelization for St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church and Catholic Charismatic Renewal Ministries for the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana, shares this journey and the amazing transformation that has occurred within himself and his immediate family in their walk with his father toward his eternal home.

Greg Broussard was your average American man talking the talk of the secular culture and walking that walk. Measuring his overall identity not by who he truly was but rather by what he had personally accomplished. Losing sight of what mattered most in his life and pursuing his own happiness at the expense of his wife and children while fighting his own personal addiction cost him everything. His personal cross led to finding redemption in personal accountability, holy masculine friendships, and a new life in Christ coming to terms with the truth that what he did doesn’t define who he is. Today, he is flourishing as a single father who has built his life around God, his kids, and working out his salvation walking in holiness and with others through Divorce Recovery Ministry at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church operating through The Office of Marriage and Family Life and the Diocese of Lafayette.

One in every three American children is now growing up in a home without their biological father. Dustin Bertrand has defied all of these odds including never knowing his biological father, growing up in the deep south amidst the lingering effects of racism as a biracial man, and fighting a subconscious lie that because he was unplanned, he wasn’t wanted. Through the grace of God, instead of becoming another statistic, he has courageously allowed God the Father to transform him into the person he is today not in spite of those circumstances, but rather because of them.

Kyle Melancon wrestled with God in the desert of his life, overcame bullying and feelings of inadequacy in childhood and as an adult in order to help young people today do the same thing. He is a former seminarian who discerned he wasn’t called to the Catholic priesthood and eventually got married. Living and sharing the gospel daily in the trenches of youth ministry in this ongoing battle he has served as a mentor and guide for countless young people over the last decade. His story is one that will inspire others to give their own “yes” even when it’s not what they originally envisioned for their life.

D.R.E.A.M.S. Foundation of Acadiana was the furthest thing from Donielle and Brian Watkins's mind when they were pregnant with their first child. At birth, their son Logan was diagnosed with Spina Bifida, a birth defect in which a baby’s spinal cord fails to develop properly. Despite being a paraplegic, Logan desired to do anything and everything that other kids did. The D.R.E.A.M.S. Foundation of Acadiana, a non-profit organization, was incorporated in 2007 to aid families and individuals with special needs flourish in society. Listen to how one special child and one extraordinary father took an unexpected burden and allowed God to transform it into a blessing for their family and community.
