The famous Christmas carol "Joy to the World" was written by English hymn writer Isaac Watts in 1719 as a lyrical adaptation of Psalm 98. Surprisingly, it was not originally intended to be a Christmas song, but rather a celebration of Christ’s future, triumphant second coming. Over a century later, American composer Lowell Mason paired the lyrics with a triumphant, energetic melody inspired by George Frideric Handel, cementing it as North America's most published holiday hymn.

Composed by Eric Whitacre with a captivating libretto by Charles Anthony Silvestri, "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine" is a dramatic, a cappella choral masterpiece commissioned for the 2001 American Choral Directors Association national convention and premiered by the Brigham Young University Singers. The piece weaves an immersive, cinematic soundscape where singers simulate the mechanical gears, snapping cables, and wing flutters of invention through intricate vocal whispers, breathing techniques, and sound effects. It pulls listeners directly into Leonardo da Vinci's mind as he battles a feverish obsession with human flight, ultimately building to a breathtaking, gravity-defying climax where his experimental engine finally takes to the air.
