We created a scene about a character named Mr. Jaws and some superheroes.  Through this story, we wanted to demonstrate themes that are important to us such as finding the good in others, always being kind, never giving up, being patient, and owning who we are.  Each of us has unique abilities in real life, that we showcased through our superhero characters.  When someone is mean, they rise above it and inspire others through teamwork.   We also wrote and recorded an original rap battle to develop our characters further!  This was a team effort between Podcast Class, Art class, and Music Therapy Class.Story:  [Open to beach scene: Superhero friends gather around for birthday party] Narrator: It was a sunny day in San Diego. The San Diego Superheroes gathered at Belmont Park to celebrate their friend Superman Daniel’s birthday. The group was very excited for their water balloon fight, dance parties, and karaoke. Gazing Grace and Siren Sarah were prepping the dance floor and putting up decorations Siren Sarah: It’s going to be an awesome day! Ice Woman: Yeah, I think so!  Narrator: then suddenly Speedy Boy heard ominous music Speedy Boy: Oh no! It’s Mr. Jaws! I’ve heard he likes to throw water balloons at people.  Black Rhino Erick: That’s right, I was at a birthday party last week and Mr. Jaws stole water balloons and threw them at all the guests.  Captain Claire: Not today!  Juan Marcos: Be! WonderwomAnda: Patient, we’ll work together to save the party Narrator: A great white shark rose from the ocean and walked toward the group on the beach. The shark bellowed:  Mr. Jaws: You Super San Diegans think you can have a birthday party and not invite me?!? We’ll see about that.  Narrator: The party scattered, but the San Diego Superheroes stood together and faced him. Wonderwomanda moved forward to confront the shark WonderwomAmanda: We’re just trying to celebrate Super Man Daniel, what do you want from us?  Mr. Jaws: If you are all as super as you say you are I have a 3-part challenge for you. First, we have to go to Belmont Park. And there you have to beat me at air hockey and Fast and Furious racing. If you make it past that, you have to face me on stage for a rap battle, where I will destroy you and your water balloons.  Narrator: The superheroes turned towards each other to make a plan. Renee Russo created an electric smoothie machine with her magic wand and offered it to the group.  Renee Russo: Everyone, let’s drink this! It will engage your super powers and help us defeat Mr. Jaws Mighty Buck: Great Idea!  *Rap Battle begins at 10:55(For the FULL Transcription email kking@ablea(continued)

  • Episode 116: The Truth About Sloths: Jack's Fun Animal Facts
Hello and welcome back to ArtBeat radio!  This week’s installment features lots of refreshing insight and fun facts about animals with AAW MAP Program student Jack Medved.  Jack shares a detailed interview about his favorite places to go and animals to see, as well as an in-depth informative segment on the nature of sloths.  We hope you enjoy listening!Jack: Roll the questions! Savannah: Why do you like educating people on animals?Jack: I am glad you asked! Not only have I learned about the animals and the habitats themselves, but I have also learned about the experts that know all about animals including the world’s best ones: The Kraft Brothers. Also, what I am going to say is now that I have learned through books and online, educating others is very important because animals are very special and so amazing. We have to let others know and to share our knowledge to protect them. Also, another reason bioinspiration which means inspiration from biodiversity. Scientists get ideas from how nature does things. In my animal stories I share important lessons and share what their stories are really all about. You could say I am a genius. Savannah: Jack, how long have you been teaching people about animals?Jack: That isn’t even a question you have to ask! The thing is, I have always been teaching people about animals because that’s what makes me, me. *omitting part about place of residence*Jack: You could say that I am really great at drawing animals and taking photos as well. My mom has an Instagram here as well. But, there is also one thing here- not only am I good at those things, but taking advice is important as well. After all, all animals are special. Another thing is, it is not always easy to make animals understand us because we can’t speak their languages or use their powers of course. Not only can you learn very good things here, but you could say I always go about discovering stuff. Adventurous, brave, and curious, that’s me!Savannah: Jack, do you have a favorite place where you like to learn about animals, such as the San Diego Zoo? Jack: I know a lot of places. I go to the San Diego Zoo a lot and SeaWorld among other places. But, everyone has to be educated when it comes to taking care of animals and protecting their habitats. Now do you understand? I am frequently right and true. But, it’s because I like to take action because it is the only way to know if your heart is in the right place. Instincts and being gifted- talk about a blessing! Savannah: Do you have any hopes or dreams for the future that you would like to share?Jack: Hopes or dreams? A lot! When it comes to adventures or things to add to my collections or my drawings. But also, it’s like the song “When You Wish Upon A Star”. That always reminds me of things. I do have a good memory. You could say I am pretty smart and all. I am protective and caring. Of course, when it comes to knowledge and it comes to me, I can do anything because I always believe in myself. Savannah: Is there anyone who you would like to thank?Jack: Well, my friend that’s a funny thing! You see, I am kind of beautiful in my own way. I can come up with ways to do certain things when it comes to answers for that. I thank my self instincts and my heart. I think I have good friends here. This taught me that even the most difficult of us has a fighting chance! When it comes to taking care of the world and protecting it, that shows how special Jack is! Now that you have got all of the questions out, that makes for a happy ending! Please email [email protected] for the full transcription.

  • Episode 113: The Glowing Battle Sword from the Sea
Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! Max: Hello and welcome back to ArtBeat radio!  This week, we will be sharing a short scene called, The Glowing Battle Sword from the Sea, from a series called, Beach Front Stories, created by students in playwriting class at ART Center.   We worked together to brainstorm, rehearse, and record these scenes and we hope you enjoy them!  SCENE 4: THE GLOWING BATTLE SWORD FOUND IN THE SEALights up on four people dressed as Illumination minions from Despicable Me. There are mirrors strategically positioned around the stage to create the effect of more Minions. Other set/prop design elements may be added for the effect. There are ocean sounds in the background and stage hands flapping fabric to emulate waves. The four minions, MINION 1, MINION 2, MINION 3, and MINION 4 stand in front of the waves looking out towards the audience presumably at the rest of the ocean. The four minions begin to communicate in minioneze, making gibberish sounds that start with "B" such as "Bababababoh". The minions communicate through these sounds emphasized with gestures and facial expressions. They are obviously excited. Throughout the "conversation" the minions are pointing into the audience, presumably referencing the ocean.ED enters the stage running. He stops when he sees the minions on the other side of the stage.ED: (Breathing heavy, not in character) I am so sorry, I thought I missed the scene. (Slowly looks at the audience.) Alright, time to get in character. (The actor playing ED shakes their body around and makes some vocal warm-up noises. When they are finished, they are in character for the rest of the scene.) Come over here guys! (ED gestures off-stage.)EDDY and EDD enter, also running.EDDY: Did ya find the sword?ED: No not yet, sorry. (points to minions)But I found... minions.EDD: Can you imagine how many quarters we could sell that sword for?EDDY: I know! I can't wait to use those quarters from this sword to buy a new sword.EDD: Don't you think someone else will try to get it before us?ED: Yeah... I think that is why they are here. (ED points at the minions who are still discussing in minioneze.)EDDY: (yelling) Come over here minions, BaaBaaBooLoo!The four minion slowly walk towards ED, EDD, and EDDY until the two groups face each other.Beat it! We're the ones that are going to get that sword!MINION 1: We need that sword so we can keep it safe!EDD: WOAH, WOAH, WOAH, wait a minute! I thought I was supposed get the sword. It is so awesome and I don't have one.MINION 2: That is not a good reason.ED: Why is it not a good reason?!? He really wants the sword.MINION 3: We need that sword to defeat Vector! He's committing crimes with direction and magnitude.EDDY: You heard 'em boys! We are going to need that sword if we ever want deflection and attitude. The Minions scoff and roll their eyes at EDDY's misunderstanding.MINION 4: Hey look! You heard us first. WE NEED THE SWORD.EDDY: Well if you want the sword you're going to have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. INION 3: Good luck with that! (laughs) While we were arguing we already sent a scuba team down to get the sword.EDDY: What, really??? That ain't fair!MINION 1: Life isn't fair... deal with it.All four minions jump into the "water". Stagehands move the fabric to cover the minions so the audience only sees their hands if they reach up.ED, EDD, and EDDY jump in after them. We see hands reaching out of the water and fighting with one another, indicating a struggle for the sword.Hardcore, melodramatic action music plays loudly during the sequence.EDD emerges from the water. He whimpers and runs out of the water. EDD exits.EDDY emerges holding a plastic sword.EDDY: I got it! I got it! (MINION 1 pops up from the water.)MINION 1: I don't think so.(MINION 1 pops back into the water)MINION 2: (Emerges holding a piece of driftwood giggling.) Hahahahhaha...... oh....(MINION 2 goes back into the water)

  • Episode 112: EPIc Loops and Parodies
Introduction: Hello everyone, and welcome back to ArtBeat Radio!  This EPI from the Able Arts!  Here we have some original parodies and some original music that we have been working on for the past couple of weeks.  We hope you enjoy it and have a great rest of your day.  Rudy’s Loops IntroductionIn this piece called, “Rudy’s Loops,” created by Rudy Austin, it’s a collection on pre-recorded loops from the software Garage Band, that was put together in the specific order, and put in a specific tempo that Rudy felt best. It’s a collection of many different melodies, and showcases a lot of different instruments and sounds that Rudy enjoyed on Garage Band.  We hope that you enjoy this piece as much as we enjoyed creating it.  Don’t Worry This piece is a parody based of the song Don’t Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin.  All of the music parody lab class here at EPI chose this song specifically and they brainstormed a couple of ideas that they wanted to have it be about and ultimately, they decided they wanted it to be about friendship and traveling.  In this song you’ll hear references about Austin Texas and spending time with friends, and overall it was a super fun experience to create lyrics and melodies that talk about the importance of friendship and also the fun times you can have by traveling.  We hope you enjoy it! InstrumentsShakers: Daniel Jacobs, Myla Irving, Piano: Rita Komsky, Emilio LopezVocals: Greco Ancona, Elizabeth Correa, Jamond Pearson, Griselda Ramos, Jessica DawsonTambourine: John NonnetteGuitar: Jermaine FreemanDrums: Rudy Austin, Elizabeth Correa LyricsVerse 1We'll dedicate this song I wrote It might want to make you fly to Austin Don't worry, be joyful In every life we have familyWe can see them around the world Don't worry, be joyful Travel and LoveChorusDo, do, do...Verse 2Ain't got no place to stay But you can always stay with me Don't worry, be joyful We can explore lots of things Maybe try the best foods and sing Don't worry, be joyfulChorusDo, do, do...Verse 3 Ain't got no worry, ain't got no care Ain't got no way to make you frown Don't worry, be joyful Have some fun in the city  Austin makes me smile every bit So don't worry, be joyfulChorusDo, do, do... I Love The Piano“I Love the Piano” is an original parody created by the Music Parody Lab class here at EPI and is based off the song You’ve Got a Friend in Me by Randy Newman. Basically, in this song, the class decided to write about the piano, their love for the piano, the different things you can do on the piano, and just overall, the great qualities that this instrument has.  They had so much fun creating it, and we hope you enjoy it as well. InstrumentsPiano/Electric Piano: Greco Ancona, Rita Komsky, Emilio Lopez, Jessica DawsonDrums: Carlos Arredondo, Daniel JacobsVocals: Jamond Pearson, Griselda Ramos, Jessica DawsonShakers: Jessica Woods, Adam MuriedaGuitar: JermaineGarageband Loops: bass, electric guitar and drums LyricsVerse 1There’s nothing betterThan the keys right hereWhen I’m sad I’ll just play alongTil I feel the joy deep inside my soulI’ll change the rhythm and the tempo I love the pianoVerse 2There’s so many keysExactly 88The piano is so beautifulIt never disappointsI’ll change the rhythm and the tempoI love the pianoBridgeIt’s the most beautiful soundPlaying around the roomThere’s nothing better than playing with you my friendIt’s me and you foreverVerse 3So I’ll play alongWhile you sit by meIt will be the best time you’ll see I love the pianoClosing Thank you so much for listening to our episode here at EPI Center, and we hope you enjoyed the musical pieces that we created just as much as we had fun creating them.  We hope you have a great rest of your day and we’ll see you here again soon!
