Conversation with visual artist Thomas Thorby-Lister about the 'paintings' he is creating in collaboration with nature, for the Orange Regional Gallery, and through the CORRIDOR project residency.
The conversation was recorded on 13 May 2022 at the Corridor project (Cowra NSW) on Wiradjuri Country, while Thorby-Lister was in the process of creating a site-responsive works for the Orange Regional Gallery exhibition which takes place from 30 July – 25 September2022: https://www.orange.nsw.gov.au/gallery/exhibitions/
We spoke about the idea of shared agency (between him and the surrounding environment); intuition, honesty, immersive scale, monochrome expression, hapticity of linen, and why his works are not easily categorised as 'paintings'.
