I talk with filmmaker and artist, John Reuter, who is creating a fascinating documentary on the extraordinary Polaroid 20X24 camera. John has worked with Polaroid since the 1970’s and has served for a number of years as the director of the Polaroid 20x24 project. Ron Dawson has been a frequent guest and co-host of the Digital Convergence Podcast. He hosted two podcasts of his for creatives: FStop Beyond and Crossing The 180. Ron confesses that after a while, producing Crossing the 180 stopped being fun and so after producing 110 episodes, he retired the show.

A move from Atlanta to Seattle ensued. After settling into his new home, Ron's wife reminded him of his love of blogging and podcasting. Encouraged by his wife, and inspired by the format and creative approach of the popular podcasts Serial and This American Life, Ron began to formulate his return to podcasting with two new podcasts: Radio Film Lab and The Solo Creative Podcast.

Ron describes Radio Film School as "This American Life for filmmakers." Ron says, "I came up with Radio Film School because it succinctly captures in essence what the show is about: audio based inspiration, education and entertainment for the aspiring filmmaker. I also think when potential listeners are perusing through iTunes, Radio Film School will instantly make sense."

Filmmaker Ron Dawson talks about creating experimental documentary ImprovJam: A Musical Convergence of Jazz, Rock & Rap.

ImprovJam captures the improvisational jam sessions of three of Seattle's finest jazz musicians, a rock guitarist, and a freestyle rapper. 

ImprovJam was filmed on location in the music room of Garfield High, a school with a rich musical history, boasting one of the finest jazz teams in the nation, and alma mater to such musical legends as Jimi Hendrix, Quincy Jones, and contemporary rap artist Macklemore. 

What happens when Ron and his crew takes nine video cameras including two Canon C100's, two T3i's, two 70D's, and four Panasonic GH4's - and records the convergence of jazz, rock, and rap is nothing short of magical.

Several months ago I watched Sound IS SPEED - Location Sound on the Set of "Where are you Bobby Browning?" - an excellent two-part behind-the-scene video about the audio and sound design work and philosophy of sound designer, sound mixer, and sound editor Jonah Guelzo. I reached out to Jonah to see if he would like to talk about audio for video. He graciously agreed and we ended recording over two hours of material - all about audio - from recording sound in the field to post processing and sound design in the studio.

In this episode, Jonah talks about audio acquisition in the field and practical tips on getting the best results using lavaliere and boom microphones, field recorders, working with talent and collaborating with the director and director of photography. He talks about recording audio for feature film, wedding video, and commercial video. Our conversation concludes with his thoughts on sound design and editing. We manage to squeeze in a few rants and pet peeves, too.
