This week, I’m reflecting on something we all face at one time or another: what do we do when our own strength isn't enough?

That question became very real for me this week as my grandson William and his friend Grady reported to The Citadel at 4:30 AM to begin “Hell Week.” Before they left, I sent them a note with what I believe is the most important advice I could give them: Put Jesus first. That advice isn't just for two young men facing a difficult week. It's something all of us need to remember.

In Judges 7, God reduces Gideon’s army from 32,000 men to just 300 so there could be no question about who gave Israel the victory. In 2 Samuel 24, we see King David fall into the temptation of trusting in the size of his army rather than trusting in God.

Those stories raise a question worth asking ourselves: Where am I relying on my own strength, resources, preparation, or plans instead of relying on God?

The Bible reminds us that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. And when we finally come to the end of our own strength, that's not necessarily a bad place to be. It may be exactly where God wants us to discover His strength.
