Ways of Awe is a new audio series by Maia Brown and Shelby Handler, produced through the Jack Straw Artist Support Program.

Weaving together interpretative translations, research, interviews, and sounds, Ways of Awe is a queer anti-Zionist audio companion for the Jewish High Holidays. Join talmud scholars, rabbis, and artists as they unearth the meanings, grammar, and ancient gossip inside the holiest prayers of the Jewish year. These audio collages range from meditative to liberatory, grief-stricken to playful, irreverent to awestruck, and from the ancestral to the immediate.

From Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur, the Days of Awe, or the Yamim Noraim, are a portal for collective reckoning and return. Each episode of Ways of Awe features a different prayer and could be listened to during the ten days, or in the month of Elul leading up.

Kora player and Jack Straw resident artist Chester Corpt recorded his arrangement of the traditional Mandinka song “Tabara,” performed with Eric Likkel on clarinet and Brady Kish on bass, as part of his Artist Support Program recording project. Chet writes, “I try in the group to introduce the principles of West African music, as I understand them as a player of the kora, to two players who are far more versed in the American musics that show heavy African influence.”

“Four Women” is from the forthcoming album Don’t Explain, the product of an award-winning, deeply expressive performance project led by celebrated vocalist Jacqueline Tabor and pianist-composer Marina Albero. Inspired by the enduring influence of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, the project blends original compositions with reimagined repertoire to create a powerful, contemporary jazz experience.

The Don’t Explain album, produced through Jacqueline’s Jack Straw Artist Support Program residency, will be released on May 20th. Tickets are available now for the release celebration at the Triple Door.
