Episode 21 with Western Mass-based, Scottish Artist, Shona Macdonald! Shona Macdonald is an artist exploring themes of landscape, memory and place in her paintings and drawings. Macdonald has exhibited widely across the US, Canada, UK and Australia including exhibitions at the Roswell Art Museum, Zillman Art Museum, Proof Gallery and Reeves Contemporary to name just a few. Her work has been reviewed extensively and she has been a visiting artist at over 50 institutions. Macdonald is a Pollock-Krasner grant recipient, selected for numerous awards, and has work in numerous public and private institutions.  This is a conversation about the slowness of making art and having a depth of inquiry to sustain you as an artist. Its a conversation about the studio as a place and our shared love of Yi Fu Tuan while defining what place is. We talk about books we love, the philosophical capability of a reflection in a puddle and the process of locating yourself through creating your work.  It's a great exploration of the tension between a place that is longed for and a place that is lived. Episode 20 of Artist & Place with Boston-based artist, Michael Zachary! Michael Zachary is workin in drawing and picture making. His work utilized the slow building up of cross hatched lines using 4 colors - CMYK. Themes explored in his work are landscape, nature,  and perception. This is a great conversation celebrating a love of the slow & tactile quality of drawing through a digital and modular approach. It's a conversation about creating speed bumps in the work to slow the viewer down, and about how landscape, according to Thoreau, can be a psychic self portrait. It's a conversation about the need for a specificity of color and achieving that through his laborious and focused process. It's a conversation about seeing as improvisational and how he came to that discovery and how in many ways he's been seeking to find that feeling of a place or a moment within his work. 

Michael Zachary has shown his work widely through the Northeast as well as nationally and internationally. He has received the support from the Joseph and Annie Albers Foundation, the Berkshire Taconic Foundation Artist Resource Trust, the MCC Cultural Council, the Boston University Blanche Coleman Trust, and Mass MoCAs Assets for Artists Grant to name a few.

Episode 19 with Boston-based artist, Adria Arch! Adria is a mixed media artist that creates immersive experiences in sculpture and paint. Adria has shown work both nationally & internationally and has work in numerous collections from the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the Library of Congress Collection of Prints, Simmons University & Google to name a few. This is a great conversation about the specificity of color, time, and understanding where one's color palette comes from. Can we have a primal color palette imprinted from our childhood? It's a conversation about the landscapes of our youth, about abstraction and the influence of our everyday surroundings. It's also a conversation about the influence of dance, theatricality, moving from 2D to 3D and the inspiration of MeowWolf & the direction that experiencing that took Adria!  Most of all, this is a conversation about the permission to make the things that YOU want to make!

This is Episode 18 with Sara Smith a transdisciplinary choreographer and librarian. Sara creates speculative-documentary performances and other works that explore interconnection and the poetics and politics of embodied and archival research. Their working process is rooted in physical practices of micro-attention and transformation. Their work has been seen and heard at venues throughout the US. They are the recipient of a Mass Cultural Council Fellowship in Choreography and support from numerous other prestigious institutions as well as residency fellowship from McDowell, Yaddo and more.  This is a conversation about building a spiritual cosmology, spiritual activism and the writing and influence of Gloria Anzalduá. This is a conversation about being aware of the limitations of our internal systems and how they impact the way in which we view the world. It's a conversation about their project In Network Time, Octopuses, and world building for the future, but also for NOW as we think about the future and how to live more embodied and interconnected.

Welcome to Episode 18 for the launch of Season 2! We are back! This conversation is with Boston-based artist & animator, Maya Erdelyi about her many life travels and many layers of inspiration growing up in Queens, New York. Her experience growing up with the graffiti of the 80s on the subway, Pee Wee's Playhouse, Saturday morning cartoons, the immersion of color and being drawn to power places. Maya is a Professor of Animation at the School Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston.  Her work has been been shown in national and international film festivals, galleries, museums and DIY venues. She was a 2020 City of Boston Artist Fellow, the recipient of a 2019 Yaddo Residency, a 2017 Mass Cultural Council Fellowship in Film recipient and many more. This is episode 15 with Western Mass, Fillipina-American artist, Donnabelle Casis! Donnabelle is a painter, radio show host for the ArtBeat Report on the Bill Newman Show, co-curator for the ArtSalon, arts community organizer and much more! Donnabelle received her MFA in Painting from the University of Washington in Seattle.  She has exhibited in museums and galleries across the US and abroad.  She has received numerous awards and grants including the Neddy Artist Fellowship for Painting. This is a conversation about finding your center to find your sense of place, about asking questions, about those moments where you question your identity as an artist and how that can be a fertile place of beginning. It's a conversation of about releasing yourself from pressure and finding joy through play and trusting the process. Episode 14 with Boston-based painter & muralist, Cyrille Conan. Cyrille Conan was born in 1973 and grew up in Queens, NY to French immigrants. He is first generation American and is bilingual. He has dual-citizenship and identifies both as French and American. This duality is apparent in his artwork. The graphic nature and grit of the work derives from growing up in NYC in the 70s & 80s and the love of nature and natural forms distilled in him from Celtic/Breton culture have transformed into a minimal, organic, geometrical abstraction. Cyrille graduated with a BFA in Painting from the Hartford Art School before planting his roots in Boston in 1998. While his primary practice is still painting, he works in a variety of mediums and scales. He’s produced site-specific installations and murals in numerous states as well as local galleries and public spaces in Boston, including The Cyclorama, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Boston City Hall.   In this conversation, we explore the intersection between studio painting and murals, the inspiration behind his work and what it's like inhabiting the felt in-between space of being first generation French American.  This is a conversation about nature, Breton culture, symbolism and moving on from Act 1 in life via a meandering path to living in his dharma now.

Episode 13 with Philadelphia artist, Arden Bendler Browning!  Arden is a painter creating large scale paintings and small works on paper, virtual reality environments and public art. Arden’s work has been exhibited and collected internationally. Her works are included in several public collections including the West Collection, the Microsoft Art Collection, Toyota and the Frost Tower Collection to name just a few. Her work is represented by Bridgette Mayer Gallery in Philadelphia, Galeri Urbane in Dallas and Tinney Contemporary in Nashville. She has done several public art commissions including works for the Philadelphia International Airport and a project with Mural Arts in Philadelphia. This is a great conversation about wanderlust, capturing the imperfect view, epic road trips and trying to continually find the sense of awe and history of a place. We talk about the experience of capturing landscape while moving through an environment, portals to limitless space, trying to capture the full experience of a place and paintings becoming records of a place, a memory and captured time.
