Who determines your success? What does failure mean to you? Choreographer and dancer Anna Barker has been playing with those questions for the last 5 years to create original dance-theatre performances interrogating our relationship to success and failure. We discuss Anna’s creation process and style, how she makes modern dance accessible to audiences, and what’s next on the horizon — including translating dance into film!
Anna Barker is a choreographer and performer based in Durham, North Carolina. After spending 10 years dancing in Philadelphia and New York City, Anna relocated back to her hometown and founded her dance theater company real.live.people with collaborator Leah Wilks. Since then, Anna has created and produced three evening-length works in Durham: it’s not me it’s you in 2014, Feature Presentation in 2016 and Again, but this time with feeling in 2018. Anna is the recipient of the North Carolina Arts Council’s Fellowship for 2018-2019. Anna has presented work as part of the American Dance Festival, Duke Performances, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, APAP NYC, The North Carolina Dance Festival, WAXworks at Triskelion Arts (Brooklyn), and at Elsewhere Collaborative, The Haw River Ballroom, The Carrack Modern Art Gallery, the Durham Arts Council, the Carrboro ArtsCenter, The Living Arts Collective, Dance New Amsterdam (Manhattan), and the New York Film School (Manhattan). Anna is a freelance choreographer and movement consultant, and teaches Pilates locally at Bull City Pilates and Massage and at Ninth Street Dance.

“I have a question about speaking up when I witness troubling things in rehearsal….” Two experts address questions about bullying in the rehearsal room.
Ashley Popio, Artistic Director of the Women’s Theatre Festival, offers insight from a theatre practitioner and leadership perspective (and we talk about best practices for directors). Elizabeth Johnson, a trauma educator with Spark Equity, shares her wisdom about bullying and the impact of healthy and unhealthy practices in our creative spaces. Both of these experts offer practical tools and actions you might take if you are a witness to this behavior, if you are the target, or if you are a director who’d like some new tools to use in the rehearsal room.
This is a longer episode than usual, but I deliberately made the choice not to divide the conversation into two. For many reasons, I feel like this is the most important episode — perhaps the most useful episode — that Artist Soapbox has released thus far. I’m curious if you agree.

What kind of work goes into making a feature-film? Do you have what it takes? How do you go about building a comprehensive fantasy world? We cover all of that and more as we dig into director Michael Babbitt’s most recent feature film The Last in Line: Saga of the Broken Swords that will be premiering November 17 at the Varsity Theatre in Chapel Hill.
Michael Babbitt’s directing experience covers over twenty years of stage productions and credits for music video, commercials, and narrative short films. Over the years he has worked for other aspiring filmmakers until starting Bombshell Studios in 2009. His films have been accepted and won awards in film festivals nationwide. He has an MFA from the Professional Acting Training Program at Playmaker’s Repertory Company and UNC Chapel Hill and a BA in Theatre from the University of Missouri at Columbia. He lives in Hillsborough with his wonderful wife and partner in Bombshell Studios.

One of Barbette Hunter’s great passions is working with children in the theatre. As actor, director, teacher, stage manager and more, Barbette draws on her skills to bring out the best in children who yearn for a theatrical experience on-stage and off. Barbette gives great pro tips for helping kids focus and building an ensemble — and she describes her plans to direct a staged reading of the full length children’s show AMAZING GRACE. (See below for audition information!) Working with kids can be so much fun!

Barbette Hunter has been performing since age 5. She’s worked as a professional actress with numerous theatre companies in the Triangle. She’s acted in films, industrial and training videos, commercials, and voice overs. She is a teaching artist for Raleigh Little Theatre and Cary Applause! Youth Theatre, the rehearsal assistant and stage manager for Cary Applause! Youth Theatre and the stage manager of the Family Village Stage for the African American Cultural Festival. Barbette is an artwork model for private studios and several local art organizations and educational institutions. Barbette Hunter holds a BA in Speech/Communications from NC State University and did graduate work in acting at UNC-Greensboro.

How to chase seemingly impossible goals, showing up when and how we can, and living and working in alignment with our core values. In this episode, designer and business owner Rebekah Miel discusses fundraising for the school lunch debt project, her book project for kids and her position on the Durham Mayor’s Council for Women representing arts and culture.
The Mayor’s Council for Women meets at 6pm on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at City Hall.
“You’ll no longer find Rebekah Miel sweating through a Tyvek suit in the lower 9th or eating curry in a refugee camp in Unawatuna, but that doesn’t mean she’s any less risk averse. These days Rebekah Miel is balancing the death defying feat of raising twins with the act of listening hard for how to be a good citizen in her adopted hometown of Durham, NC. Her current job title is Creative Director of her own shop, Miel Design Studio where she spends most of her time trying to make beautiful sense out of a complex world. Ask her what that means, but don’t be surprised if the answer has something to do with books or school lunch.”
