Erica Iman makes hand-built, one-of-a-kind vessels that are often reflective of forms or fragments found in nature. She enjoys the raw material properties of clay and minerals and is continuously experimenting with these materials and processes to advance her work. Erica received her BFA in Ceramics and BSE in Art from the University of Missouri Columbia in 2005 and obtained her MFA in Ceramics from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2012. Between earning her degrees she served 2 years in the U.S. Peace Corps on the Eastern Steppe of Mongolia and was a selected participant in the International Workshop for Ceramic Arts in Tokoname,(IWCAT) Japan program in 2007. Wikipedia defines cultural appropriation, cultural misappropriations, as a concept in sociology dealing with the adoption of the elements of a minority culture by members of the dominant culture. It is distinguished from equal cultural exchange due to the prescience of a colonial element and imbalance of power. Cultural (mis)appropriation is often portrayed as harmful in contemporary cultures, and is claimed to be a violation of the collective intellectual property rights of the originating, minority cultures, notably indigenous cultures and those living under colonial rule. Often unavoidable when multiple cultures come together, cultural exchange, as well as misappropriations, can include using other cultures’ cultural and religious tradition, fashion, symbols, language, and songs. Jeanette Powers is an anarchist performance artist who uses poetry and art to question habitual behavior and to dismantle internalized obedience. She heads the artist-driven performing arts venue, Uptown Arts Bar, and is the founding editor of non-profit Chameleon Press. She’s published a bunch of books of poetry, including the newest: Gasconade by NightBallet Press in April 2018. She is an alumni of Osage Arts Community and serves on the board for FountainVerse, an annual small press poetry fest in Kansas City, Missouri.
