Stanley  E.  Banks is an  Assistant Professor  and  Artist-In-Residence  at  Avila  University since  1997.  Banks  had  his 5th  book  of  poetry,  BLUE  ISSUES,  published  in  2013  by  Naomi  Bards Press  in  Kansas  City,  Missouri.  His  other  4  books  are  BLUE  BEAT  SYNCOPATION  (2003),  ON  10th  ALLEY  WAY  (1981),  COMING  FROM  A  FUNKY  TIME  AND  PLACE (1988),  and  RHYTHM  AND  GUTS  (1992).  While  attending  Howard  University  in  Washington,  D.C.  as  a   Graduate  student  in  the  Fall  of   1980,   he  met  Sterling  Brown,  the  great  Harlem  Renaissance  poet,  and  in  the  following  year,  he  received  the  Langston  Hughes  Prize  For  Poetry.  He  has  won  Honorary  Awards   which  include  a  Proclamation  For  Achievement  in  2002  from  the  Mayor  of  Kansas  City,   Missouri,  and  for  the  entire  year  of   2002,   his  life  and  history  in  publishing  was  exhibited  at  The  Black  Archives  of   Mid-America ,  Inc.  Further,  in  1989  he  was  awarded  the  National  Endowment  for  the  Arts  Fellowship/Grant  for  his  poetry.  He  has  been  published  in  many literary magazines/journals  around  the  country. Artists Judith G. Levy and Caitlin Horsmon discuss how they use history, found materials and research in their work. Judith G. Levy is a multidisciplinary artist, whose work explores history, culture and identity. She creates videos, installations, two-dimensional work, public art and performance. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally and her public art has been shown in Indianapolis, Chicago and Kansas City. Her feature film, NV in KC: A Story About Artists and Envy in Kansas City premiered in Kansas City and Lawrence, Kansas in 2013, was included in The H & R Block Artspace Performance Now Film series and screened at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Levy was awarded a Charlotte Street Fellowship and an ArtsKC Inspiration Grant in 2014 to attend Art Omi, a month-long international artist residency, where she created a site-specific installation and a video documented performance piece. Her work was recently included in the group show, Loving After Lifetimes of All This at la Esquina in Kansas City. Sonie Joi Thompson-Ruffin, visiting curator of the American Jazz Museum Changing Gallery, and Bill McKemy, the museum's education manager, will discuss the current exhibit "Jazz Then & Now" and other programming at the museum. Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin is a renowned award winning contemporary fabric artist, author, teacher lecturer and fabric designer born, raised and educated in the Midwest. She has led workshops and lectures on African American quilting and color combining at the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery, Carter Art Center, New England Quilt Museum, Nelson Atkins Museum and Nerman Art Museum. Her art work has appeared at International Quilt Market and a host of museums, universities and quilt guilds across the United States. She is the author of Soulful Art of African American Quilts and Opening Day, both quilt books published by Kansas City Star quilt book division and the designer of ''My African Village, Drums of Afrika and Jumpin' the Broom'' fabric collections. Poet/educator/musician, Ken Eberhart and his daughter, Deanna joins us in the first half of the program. Ralph Tomlinson, Adult Services Librarian with the Olathe Public Library discusses upcoming events at the library that includes music, performance, and ukulele lessons. Ken Eberhart has presented poetry readings at the Writer's Place, the Kansas City Public Library, the Neon Gallery, the Johnson County Public Library, and the Johnson County Arboretum. Writer/educator Brian Daldorph and The Recipe KC, (Theodore "Priest" Hughes and Desmond "3-3-7" Jones) join Maria Vasquez Boyd and Michelle Pond live from the KKFI studio. Brian Daldorph came to the University of Kansas English Department almost 20 years ago and has become a permanent resident of Kansas. He contributes to Kansas belles lettres in many ways: he writes; he organizes readings; and he is a writing class instructor at the Douglas County Jail -- featured in Poet’s Market 2008. Brian has taught English at the University of Kansas since 1990. He also has taught in Japan, Senegal, and England. His books are The Holocaust and Hiroshima: Poems (Mid-America, 1997); Outcasts (Mid-America, 2000); Senegal Blues (219 Press, 2004); and From the Inside Out: Sonnets (Woodley, 2008).
