The old cowpoke
rolled one last smoke
and headed for the door,
in his fancy boots,
chasing other pursuits
far beyond that sawdust floor,
he could rope bulls,
break wild horses
but he couldn't warm her soul
so he rode away drunk
from his last, lost love,
letting his horse take control
All she left him was a garter
and a lukewarm beer,
while she danced all night
with some city dudes
till her absence made it clear,
that he was being hustled
for the drinks he'd share,
and the true love he was seeking
wouldn't be found there.....
He headed back to the bunkhouse
for another endless night,
no longer trying to kid himself
that he would be all right,
all the years he'd spent
trying to find a wife
finally made him understand
there ain't no Saint Nick In Santa Fe
and he would be a lonely man.
a lonely man
Several weeks later
his faithful horse
rejected him as well,
throwing him straight
up head over heels
it left him broken where he fell,
a rattlesnake had crossed it's path
and it did what horses do,
he died staring up at a cobalt sky
that matched his lonely
blues-oo-ooo-ooo-oo-ooo-ooos
All his last love ever left him
was a garter and a beer,
while she danced all night
with some city dudes
till her absence made it clear,
that he was being hustled
for the drinks he'd share,
and the true love he was seeking
wouldn't be found anywhere
wouldn't be found anywhere
But I'm sure he found an angel
as an answer to his prayers.
