Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two most common types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and they share many symptoms.

In Crohn’s disease, inflammation extends through the entire thickness of the intestine, whereas in ulcerative colitis, the inflammation is mainly centered in the mucosa — that is, along the surface of the inner colon. The severity and frequency of attacks can vary widely.

In both cases, there is chronic or recurring inflammation in the digestive tract, resulting from a misguided immune response. The body’s immune system is attacking its own gastrointestinal system as though it were a pathogen.

Both conditions are associated with inflammation and damage to widespread areas of the body, including the central nervous system and nerves.
