Native American warriors were attacking the Warner Valley of Southeastern Oregon in 1878 when the William Jones family packed their wagon and fled for safety to Lakeview. As they mounted a ridge, they looked back to see their cabin burning.

There are no complete records for the Brother Jonathan Cemetery in Crescent City, Calif., located on an early burial site described in the 1920s by a newspaper as “a jungle, littered with broken stones removed from their proper graves.”

A British diplomat liked the fishing on the Rogue River so much he decided to build his own lodge along its banks. His Britannic Majesty’s consul to Mexico, Douglas A Collie-MacNeill, had searched the premier fishing streams of the world and cast flies over most of the noted angling waters of two continents before naming the Rogue River as the best.

The owners of the first private airplane in Medford, Ore., named it the Mayfly, as in the expression, “it may fly.” It became better known as “Old Sturdy” after introducing dozens of people to the miracle of flight.

On April 29, 1898, thirty-nine members of Company D, Oregon National Guard, left Ashland, Oregon for Cuba and the Spanish-American War. The night before, they had been treated to a bountiful banquet at the Armory by the Women’s Relief Corps of Burmese Post, Grand Army of the Republic.
