As The Story Grows episodes

  • Allan Aguirre of Scaterd Few (Part One)

Fly fishing, mountain life, and making punk history...just a few highlights found on this first of 2 chapters of chapter twelve. The Godfather (yup, we said it) of Christian hardcore, Allan Aguirre (aka Ramald Domkus) shares some exclusive history on the origins of Scaterd Few, Cygnet, which later became Spy Glass Blue, and the highs and lows of starting a grassroots street ministry in the meanest streets of Los Angeles, CA in the 1980s amongst gang violence. His legacy with Scaterd Few literally inspired countless bands who would be a massive influence, along with Allan, in the 1990s. Featured here on this first half, we hear about Allan's first pre- Scaterd Few punk band in 1981 that ministered to many in Guatamala. We also get to hear about played in a band with Don Bolles from The Germs and 45 Grave before Scaterd Few, and meeting the legendary Terry Taylor in the early 80s, Allan's relationship with HR and Bad Brains, and what would become the Scaterd Few we know and love in the late 80s and early 90s. This episode is an almost overwhelming wealth of story telling for the hard core Scaterd Few fans out there both young and old.

    • Bob Nanna of Braid

Braid. Hey Mercedes. Two of Trav's favorite bands. The cool thing is you can talk to one Bob Nanna and cover both. First we have a few records to talk about. Then Stephen tells one of those stories that reminds you that it could be embarrassing to go "commando".

Bob Nanna tells us about the space between the end of Braid and the beginning of Hey Mercedes and how it went down in Hawaii. Hear about how Hey Mercedes met their tour manager Chris on the Vagrant tour. Bob Nanna was nice enough to open up about a cancer scare, yet how he somehow found the peace to not let it be a scare...plus he got a hat out of it so that's cool. Cancer sucks. We are all getting older every day and there comes a time where we have to make smarter decisions about our health. Drink more water, folks. He reminds us that when you go see a band they didn't just come from their tour bus fully rested...sometimes they didn't even sleep the night before. Remember that.

Bob is involved in something pretty special called Downwrite, where you can hire a songwriter to write a customized song just for you. It's a really neat, intimate approach and I recommend the site. Just scroll around and see who's involved. Bob is covering his top 100 songs (yeah...) all the way up to his favorite song "Chesterfield King" by Jawbreaker. Thanks for listening. We love you. Take care. Bye-bye.

          • Steven Kleisath of Further Seems Forever (Strongarm, Shai Hulud)

You ever wonder if that kid that plays video games all the time is ever going to amount to anything? Steven Kleisath joins our story with his journey though music, competitive gaming and airport limo runs. You've heard him before; he's played drums in Strongarm, Shai Hulud, Further Seems Forever, En Masse and Comanche. Mr. Kleisath is also the World Record holder in the classic arcade game "Mario Bros." - scoring over 5 million points. He is also the #3 Ms. Pac-Man (Turbo) player in the world as ranked by Twin Galaxies.

All of this and still manages to drive for a Florida limo company called Alphatrans. He once toured with Shai Hulud AND Strongarm and played two sets a night! Steven tells us for the first time that there is a "How To Start A Fire" reunion brewing for 2016. (Thanks Steven!) He'll be in Pittsburgh in July/August as a panelist at Replay FX for Mario Bros, if you're a game fan you should go see him. Tell him ATSG sent ya...

This is one of the busiest guys you'll ever hear and we were honored to have him join us. He has invited all of our listeners who are interested in on-line poker or game streaming to follow him on his twitch page (link below). Thanks for listening! We love you. Take Care. Bye-bye.

                • Michael Gilligan of Fake Chapter Records

Michael Gilligan, or "Gil", has been running his own record label since 1996. Fake Chapter Records has released split CASSETTES, survived a forced name change, napster, music thievery, industry changes...and he is still going. We had some recording issues with this one so we apologize for the slight hint of wonky with the recording...BUT we took Gil's advice: He attributes "being too stupid to give up" as his secret to success. Gil has worked in the industry at Gig Records, Matador Records...SONY records...pretty impressive resume. Gil processed the Sony deal that put the Hum song "Stars" into a Chevrolet commercial. As if this dude isn't busy enough, he then writes a book! Gil has been stashing everything that he found entertaining about the music industry since 1996 and collecting his ideas to finally write about it. His book "Sex, Drugs and Cubicles: What I've Learned From The Music Industry" is available everywhere. It's a light, entertaining read and we are going to give you a copy as a thanks for listening gift. The first email we get that has a funny, music industry related story gets read on the air and gets Trav's copy of the book. It pays to read the show notes, ya'll. Thanks for listening! We love you, take care. Bye-bye.

                    • "Strange Cousins From The East"

No special guests this time, Story Growsers...except Trav's son Ben in the intro. How cute is that? Steve and Trav do what they do best: nerd out about music, vinyl and podcasts. We cover a hilarious real life Lebowski-related story. Trav went to see Mastodon and Clutch which opens up a small peek into the mind of Stephen. Scary in there. Then we move onto some podcasts that we have loved as of late and want you all to check out. Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed talks to Brent of Mastodon and BELIEVE me you will laugh. Hard. Stephen digs on the horror film stuff...Film Junk, Horror Movie Podcast, Horror Etc. (Trav is too much of a wussy fraidy-cat.) Stephen goes theologically deep with Mortification Of Spin and Unbelievable? Trav loves the I'd Hit That drumming podcast with Brain. Super hilarious. Ok...then we roll up our sleeves and talk important vinyl...at least important to us. Scaterd Few's masterpiece "Sin Disease" is celebrating it's 25th anniversary and finally coming to vinyl thanks to Burnt Toast vinyl. (Super secret test pressing link below). Tourniquet is trying to kickstart their classic "Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance" onto double vinyl with original artwork. Please help them get there!

Oh...Trav's band Half Bomber has their new site up and running...thanks Mr. Skull Toaster Seth Double You! Swing by for a visit!

We just hit 3,000 listens this past week. Thank you all SO much. We love you. Take care. Bye-bye.

                          • Dan Frome of Roomrunner

One of the busiest human beings we know...Dan Frome afforded us a little time to talk. Get this...when we called him a while back to record, he said "I'll have to get back to you, the band I'm running sound for is about to do Letterman." Yeah. This is the same guy who recorded the Unteachers 7" and some tracks on "A Human Comedy". He now plays bass for Roomrunner and just recorded with J Robbins. (J keeps coming up...anybody know him? We should talk to him.) Dan started running sound for Future Islands about 1 & 1/2 years ago. This new gig has dragged him around the world, Coachella (funny Jared Leto story), David Letterman, just insane. Hear the stories of his super secret recording studio in Baltimore, the legend of that space which has degrees touching Shudder To Think, Ted Nicely, TV On The Radio and other early Dischord folks. Hear how Dan FOUND lost recording reels from bands such as Rodan, The Jesus Lizard and more. His path to today has been bananas.

Special thanks to our pal Bill O'Really for closing our show for us.

One of the more successful Solid State bands, Becoming The Archetype hits close to home. They've always been our brothers from Georgia. Trav's guitarist Alex from Aletheian joined BTA for an album. BTA slept in our home a number of times, recorded in the first incantation of Trav's studio, made a Solamors album with Jason and Alex. (Haha...just the site of Jason Wisdom sleeping in my kid's room...hilarious.) Anyways...Seth Hecox has been one of our friends for over a decade. Follow his story as we learn about his secret love for folk/electronic music...so much so he's experimenting with blending the two. This guy played with Five Iron Frenzy and opened for Reel Big Fish! He loves baseball...I mean LOVES baseball. The Hecoxes (what's the plural on that?) are expecting another baby. We learn about some of the interesting facets of working in a Lutheran church. Seth has some Becoming The Archetype news...you gotta listen.

One last thing: There is a great guy out there named Jonathan Dick. He writes a lot and if you're into music you may have already read some of his stuff. His daughter is suffering from a respiratory disorder called ciliary dyskinesia. Follow the link below and just read.

                                    • Andrew Elstner of Torche

If you aren't laughing during this one then your earbuds are broken. This chapter is exactly what we've set out to do with this podcast...which is tell fantastic stories. We revisit for the first time (trust me, that's accurate) with our pal Andrew from the band Torche and recap their North American tour. Andrew wrote a tour diary and we pick some highlight stories. Like...Grand Rapids, MI is connected to New Zealand by a magical Lord Of The Rings pinball time machine. ...CC Deville of Poison has awful ideas about guitar sponsership in Toledo. ...There is a secret place of solace for bands in Montreal. ...Philadelphia almost killed Andrew by way of diarrhea. We get a little personal and talk about life off the road and the in-between stuff of a professional musician and how precious it is to cut your grass.

One last thing: There is a great guy out there named Jonathan Dick. He writes a lot and if you're into music you may have already read some of his stuff. His daughter is suffering from a respiratory disorder called ciliary dyskinesia. Follow the link below and just read.

                                          • Taylor and Sarah of This Way To The Egress

South east Pennsylvania represent! "Tyrant Taylor" Galassi and "Saddle Sarah" Shown join the story to tell us how their band This Way To The Egress is a shining example of what a D.I.Y. band is capable of. They are coming hot off the heels of a successful kickstarter campaign for their new album "The Great Balancing Act" which they recorded in Brooklyn with legendary producer Roger Greenawalt. Now they're getting ready to leave for a independently scheduled month long tour. These Egress kids are BUSY...this is their art and it is DANGEROUS! There is a lot of solid advice about independent publishing and licensing in here too. They were nice enough to let us have the song "What Do Ya Want" as an exclusive that they won't be releasing anywhere else before the album (...ahem...) DROPS. There is a little discussion at the end about the Foo Fighters "Sonic Highway" series and some bitchin' about Record Store Day...just reporting.

When opportunity knocks, you answer the door. Timothy Henderson doesn't get a chance to talk about his musical past very often so we took advantage of his generous offering to talk to us for hours about it. He covers it all. Coming up with Mr. Bishops Fist. The Legend of "The Kentucky Men" (Catechumen)..the best band that no one has ever heard...until now. We have exclusive never-before-heard recordings of a Catechumen live rehearsal. Then, the two year reign of the almighty Warlord. This chapter ends with a very serious discussion about fibromyalgia and what we at ATSG are going to try to do to help Timothy and his family.
