  • Dan Gailey of Phinehas

Sure there are a lot of musician stories, but how many of them ACTUALLY walked away from college to do it? Daniel Gailey has that exact story. Dan had a full wrestling scolarship to college and opted to shred guitars instead. It is so great to see how far he has come in such a short amount of time. Dan Gailey seems to have a niche of being able to step in, learn quick and improve upon the guitar in metal bands. This 26 year old is an old metal soul who isn't ashamed to solo. Oh...and there's a little tease with some BTA news...shhhh....it's a secret...

Onto Phinehas, who are poised to become the next kings of the Christian metal mountain. Dan has had one, no that isn't a typo, one live practice with Phinehas. One. Think about that. Phinehas is unashamed, proud and just crushing every tour in their path including the next biggie in October. Thanks so much to Seth W for joining me and Amy from Atom Splitter PR for setting this all up. We love Dan, and Seth, and Amy, and you. Take care. Bye-bye.

    • Ryan Downey of Alternative Press / Superhero Management

Ryan Downey is the senior editor for Alternative Press magazine, started his own band management company called Superhero Mgt. managing Greg Puciato and Killer Be Killed, Demon Hunter, The Atlas Moth and Throwdown. Ryan Downey has worked for MTV and used to be the vocalist for Burn It Down. It's ridiculous that Ryan found time to be home let alone talk to Trav and this chapters guest host Seth W.

I'll sum this whole chapter up for you by quoting Ryan J Downey in saying that the music industry is "more assholes fighting over less stuff". The opening Coalesce story is...a zinger. Wow. Ryan explains what it means and doesn't mean to be a band manager. There's a lot in this one and I recommend taking notes. Plus...there is a Dave Elitch drummer drama story in here about Killer Be Killed that has...bum bum bummmm...never been told before. So much insight in this one you'll need to visit it twice. Ryan Downey loves you. Take care. Bye bye.

      • Cory Brandan of Norma Jean

Cory Brandan. Yup. THAT Cory. Norma Jean. Eso-Charis. Fear Is The Driving Force. What a great addition to your ATSG collection. Cory and I iron out the Eso-Sacrifice lineups, discuss the upcoming 10th Anniversary tour for Oh God The Aftermath, and discuss...ahem...fondling and murdering fellow astronauts while Heavy Randy is drunk driving on the moon in spadoinkle mode. Yeah. Cory Brandan has his own "everything" company called Unwork. We discuss Norma Jean's move from Solid State to Razor & Tie and their new upcoming, unannounced label. (Gonna be "SIIIICK"...Cory's words, not mine.) I read a twitter question from Seth Hansen ( @thestormmaster) directly to Cory. That's right. We interact when we can. Secret side projects in Canada, country music, bad tattoos...so fun. We then get into Cory opening up and telling the world about his new lyrical goals with this new era for Norma Jean. Oh...and that milk vomitting video. We got it all for you. You know why? Because we love you. Take care. Bye-bye.

        • Shelby Cinca of Frodus

Shelby Cinca is a wild conversation. What a blast. We learn how he wound up overseas, the DC scene, Dischord, Ian McKaye...really cool insight on a scene that we all THINK we know. His band Frodus is considered to be a cornerstone band of the 90's post-hardcore. Shelby Cinca has played with members of Fugazi, Dillinger Escape Plan and many, many....MANY others. Seriously. Biggest band camp page I've ever seen. We discuss board gaming, cupcake making and pro wrestling. But it also gets deep, dark and beautiful. We discuss birth, death, sacrifice, perspective and dark matter. We love this dude...and we love you. Take care. Bye-bye.

        • Justin Carroll (Narcissus)

Justin Carroll has done everything. Everything...include wear cardboard socks. Dude played bass in Narcissus...twice. He apparently had a little trouble keeping his clothes on when he was younger. Then...somehow kept clothes on long enough to marry into our family. Started his own business. Made a blog to encourage young couples who can't get pregnant because they couldn't get pregnant. Then they got pregnant. Then they got pregnant again. He's a usually naked, cardboard sock wearing ball of energy who loves to create and encourage folks who have pregnancy issues. How is THAT not worth a listen? Justin loves you. So do we. Take care. We are so proud to have Bethlehem's own Secret Cutter join the story. In this second installment of local Lehigh Valley music...Evan, Ekim and Jared sit down with Trav and discuss the early beginnings of Secret Cutter.

Stephen and Trav babble a little about Sepultura...just because. We received a very encouraging email from a jent named Jerry Adams. We're proud to be a part of Jerry's monday morning California commute. He's got a band called Ourfathers and we play a track for ya'll at the end...right after the exclusive Secret Cutter Dead Kennedys cover that no one has ever heard before. • Jason Wisdom (Becoming The Archetype, Solamors)

Well, it's here. The official craziest tour story we've ever heard here at ATSG. Jason Wisdom mins the story and tells us about the highs of being in Becoming The Archetype as well as the lows of not being in Becoming The Archetype. Jason tells us a little about how the Solamors album hit him at the perfect time and...and at the same time had to be hidden as much as possible. Jason Wisdom becomes a Bible teacher. He then feels a different calling on his life in "RYFO". RYFO [rye-foe] is a non-profit advocate for outreach to musicians. So, ladies and gents, Jason Wisdom climbed just about as Christian metal guys can get and now he is on a mission to help the very industry that made him who he is. Listen up, this is a GOOD story.

              • Collin Simula of Maranatha

Speaking from experience, we've found that some of the busiest folks are the ones who are trying to be a spouse/parent AND still produce and be involved with relevant music. Enter one Collin Simula of Maranatha. Listen to his story from the early Ohio hardcore scene, his very strange invite to play in Symphony In Peril, switching roles in the same band, and then starting one on your own. His project "Maranatha" has proven to be some of the heaviest stuff you've ever heard, all the while being able to lyrically challenge beliefs and leaving Christians with a sour stomach. Yes, sure there is an inverted cross...but you need BOTH sides of the story. Collin is now sharing equal band duties with bassist/frontman Jack Huston and has taken Maranatha from a self-contained recording in his son's closet to one of the heavier live experiences Columbus, Ohio has to offer. Follow the link below to check out the new album "Filth" which is being released on July 24th on New American Records. Go get some.

                • Jarrod Norris of Deadself

...and you thought YOU were busy? Movers and shakers, meet Jarrod Norris...you're new biggest inspiration. If you were anywhere near the heavier side of the Christian music industry this chapter has become you're new version of the six degrees of Kevin Bacon game. Jarrod Norris of Deadself Recordings has been involved in something you are into. He was Deadself Records and made a comp called "Blessed Be This Killing" off of which you've probably heard something: Eso-Charis, Seasons In The Field, Pensive, Shockwave, Societys Finest, Overcome, xDisciplex, Spitfire, and so on. Jarrod has been involved with Fighting Academy, Legions Will Fall, Indwelling, Overcome, Beg For Life and Beast Of Burden. Jarrod Norris toured with Living Sacrifice, Embodiment and Eso-Charis. He's the guy who put our that infamous first Eso-Charis 7". But onto the important stuff...

Jarrod's life totally changed the day his son Judah was born with Down Syndrome. He says it was then that he realized the calling he had on his life. It gets real from this point on...kinda makes music seem so irrelevant. He keeps a blog as a dad, teacher, coach and advocate for people with Down Syndrome and guest writes on Modern Day Dads. It's because of his son that he went to school to become a special education teacher. Then Jarrod won Teacher Of The Year for Yuma County, Arizona of 2013. (Obstacles don't seem to bother him very much.) This award landed him a position to be on a board of members to improve on a lot of things like the local playground. He now coaches for the Special Olympics. Come hear the story of the hardcore kid gone good. All his links/follows can be found below. Follow this guy. Be inspired to teach. To advocate. To include.

Here we go! We are celebrating our thirtieth episode with the 25 year anniversary release of Scaterd Few's "Sin Disease" with the second part of our 12th chapter (which is actually our 13th chapter). Ok. If your head hasn't exploded after that idiotic first sentence, then enjoy part two of our discussion with Allan Aguirre of Scaterd Few. NOW, we're gonna get dirty.
