In our second sermon of our Stewardship Series, we focus on thanksgiving. A steward is called not to simply be thankful, but to give thanks for what God has done. Jesus teaches this in Luke 17 when one Samaritan returns to give thanks to God when Jesus heals 10 men with leprosy.

So often we don’t see the many blessings God has given us. Like the prodigal son, we think these blessings belong to us and that we are free to use them however we wish. But what is the real situation regarding the blessings we receive from God?

Jesus uses some really strong language here to describe how serious a problem sin really is. Jesus really means what He says here and makes a demand we cannot hope to meet, but the news is not hopeless. Christ meets this demand in our place and frees us from this harsh penalty of sin.

Description: Our fallen human temptation is to elevate those who do amazing and fantastic deeds to greatness. Extraordinary athletes, scientists, leaders, etc. are all elevated to greatness because they do more things or better things than others. In Mark 9, Jesus redefines greatness for His disciples. Jesus turns our understanding of the term upside down.

Description: Our Lord Jesus has commanded us to make disciples. There is often a lot of focus on going and baptizing, but less on teaching. God has given us the gift of His Word so that we might know Him. He has also given us two institutions which teach us "to observe all that I have commanded you” and that is the family and the Church.

Summary: God’s Word does what it says. Yet, like the witnesses in Mark 7, we sometimes think we know better. Sometimes we disobey direct commands from God to do things in ways that we think are better, yet God’s Word works! We should obey God’s word.
