Good evening! Welcome back!
It's June and that means it's Pride month but where did Pride come from? When did it start and who started it? Tonight we have a double story of the two trans women who fought for those in the margins of the marginalized and the event that cemented them as Pride and gay liberation icons in the LGBTQ+ Community.
Tonight’s story contains discrimination and violence against people of color and the LGBTQ+ community, survival sex work involving a child and brief mentions of suicide. Please use discretion.
I goofed and called Sylvia Rivera’s 1973 Pride Rally speech the “Y’all Better Calm Down” Speech (maybe because that is something I feel like I would say) and it is actually the “Y’all Better Quiet Down” Speech. There is a link below if you care to watch it in its entirety. It’s fiery. Also, there is some strong language.
Mentioned Media and Organizations:
Sylvia Rivera’s “Y’all Better Quiet Down” Speech in 1973 (Note: some strong language)
Sylvia Rivera Law Project
Marsha P. Johnson Institute
