In the first episode of Today's Voices by Ashoka Podcast, Prof. Ashwini Deshpande, Founding Director of Centre for Economic Data and Analysis (CEDA, is in conversation with Akshi Chawla, Associate Editor and Senior Programme Manager at the CEDA, about the significance of International Women's Day and where it stands today.

Ashwini Deshpande is a Professor of Economics and Founding Director of, Centre for Economic Data and Analysis (CEDA) at Ashoka University. Her Ph.D. and early publications have been on the international debt crisis of the 1980s. Subsequently, she has been working on the economics of discrimination and affirmative action, with a focus on caste and gender in India. She has published extensively in leading scholarly journals. She received the EXIM Bank award for outstanding dissertation (now called the IERA Award) in 1994, the 2007 VKRV Rao Award for Indian economists under 45, and SKOCH Award for Gender Economics in 2022.

Rita Kothari’s ‘Uneasy Translations: Self, Experience and Indian Literature’ published by Bloomsbury Publishing is a quietly political book that questions what we consider legitimate knowledge. Rita Kothari is a Professor of English and the Director of the MA in English Programme at Ashoka University. She is also the Co-Director of the Ashoka Centre for Translation.

As a multilingual scholar and translator, she has worked extensively on translating Gujarati and Sindhi writings into English. Her new book, “Uneasy Translations” interweaves the personal journey of an academic into reflections around self, language, and translation with an eye on the intangibly available category of experience. From exploring the language of Hindi film songs to establishing the demarcation between shame and humiliation to explaining the relationship between gender and translation, this book questions the normative. 

In the second episode of #Bookmarked, Deepak Vamsi Rajavarapu, Deputy Manager, PR and Communications at Ashoka University and a Young India Fellow (2019) is in conversation with Professor Nayanjot Lahiri about her latest book "Searching for Ashoka - Questing for a Buddhist King from India to Thailand". 

Nayanjot Lahiri is a historian and archaeologist of ancient India and a professor of history at Ashoka University since 2016. An awardee of the Infosys Prize in Humanities – Archaeology for 2013, Prof. Lahiri has also authored several scholarly reads, one of which titled “Ashoka in Ancient India”, was awarded the John F. Richards Prize, 2015.

She has been a faculty at Hindu College, and at the Department of History (DU) till 2015 and has also served as Dean of Colleges and International Relations at DU. An awardee of the Infosys Prize in Humanities – Archaeology for 2013, Prof. Lahiri has also authored several scholarly reads, one of which titled “Ashoka in Ancient India”, was awarded the John F. Richards Prize, 2015.

Priyank Narayan is the Director of the InfoEdge Centre for Entrepreneurship at Ashoka University. Mukesh Sud is an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and a Visiting Faculty at the Department of Entrepreneurship, Ashoka University. 

Their book, “Leapfrog” blends stories and anecdotes which are supported by extensive research to suggest six ways to flourish at work.
