  • Episode 41: The Void Left Behind When Dad Leaves or is not Present
We are back with Behavior Specialist (and Legacy Board Chair and President) Mr. Byron Ricks to continue our series on raising children in single parent homes.

He writes in his book that:

“Boys without fathers feel incomplete. Consciously or not, boys will try to fill the Void. This can manifest itself in many things – promiscuity, pornography, violent behaviors, drugs & alcohol, associating with the wrong crowd and other behaviors that give them short-term fulfillment.”

Today, we will delve into the void left behind when Dad leaves or is just not present. We will talk about the definition of what is meant by the void and behaviors that can manifest due to the void left behind when Dad is not present.

Mr. Ricks will also talk about how parents can help overcome the possibility of children succumbing to "void" behaviors and or how to work with children who are starting to enter into some of these void behaviors.

Our sincere thanks to Mr. Ricks for using his own experience to help our parents understand better the ramifications of not allowing or having Dad in the lives of his children and also for helping our parents know what to do if they are currently in this situation.

  • Episode 40: Turning Boys into Productive Men with Character
This week we continue our series with Human behavior expert Byron Ricks (also our long time Legacy Board Chair/President!), on helping single parent families learn how to manage their sons more effectively.
He will share how to encourage your boy’s best instincts. When our instincts are properly encouraged, they help us become more productive social beings; however, some of our natural instincts require a measure of control to keep them from becoming self-destructive. Mr. Ricks explores:
    • The natural longing for a father’s praise
    • How being part of a whole family encourages young boys to contribute to their community (with the definition of what is "whole family")
    • How fatherless boys can learn skills that foster productivity
    • How to help a boy with his anger
    • Community resources a parent can tap into to help with their child's development

Come listen to hear how Mr. Ricks is using not only his own experience growing up in a single parent home but also using his behavior science training to help today's single parent homes understand the socio emotional needs of their chil(ren). Strategies and action steps will be shared!

  • Episode 38: Angry Mama Drama
This week we continue our series with Human behavior expert Byron Ricks (also our long time Legacy Board Chair/President!), on helping single parent families understand how the impact of often emotionally based decisions of the adults end up hurting their children emotionally and often, permanently.
We will delve into how “Angry Mama Dramas” Turn Kids into Pawns - Why excluding dads from kids’ lives is a harmful, selfish act.
Children pay a heavy price for the behaviors of angry mothers. Ricks’ mother worked hard to raise her son single-handedly—but she never forgave his father for leaving, and kept the two of them apart throughout his childhood. Such actions driven by anger can permanently scar boys. He will discusses:
    • Top mistakes angry moms make with their sons
    • How to talk to a female friend or relative who believes excluding the father is in the child’s best interests
    • Advice for women whose child's father is absolutely not in the picture. What can she do to ensure a male figure positively impacts her child?
    • Advice and tips for dads seeking a way back into their kids’ lives
    • For dads: why some contact with your son is better than none

Tuesday, July 9th, Mr. Ricks will follow up with Turning Boys into Productive Men through Strategic Character Development. Be sure to mark your calendar for that podcast!
