🧬 Can You REALLY Slow Biological Aging? | New Longevity Science Explained
Can we actually slow down biological aging? That was the focus of this week’s Ask the Dr. with Dr. Michael Lange and Dr. Susan Summerton.
While we can’t stop chronological aging, exciting new research suggests our daily habits may influence how quickly we age biologically. This episode explores the latest science on longevity, healthy aging, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle strategies that may help you live longer—and healthier.
In This Episode We Discuss:
🧬 Telomeres & Biological Aging
What telomeres are, why they matter, and how exercise, quality sleep, stress management, proper nutrition, and maintaining muscle mass may help support healthier aging.
🍊 Vitamin C, Cortisol & Recovery
How vitamin C helps reduce oxidative stress after exercise, supports recovery, and may help maintain healthy cortisol levels. Chronically elevated cortisol has been linked to accelerated aging, muscle loss, abdominal fat, and cognitive decline.
💊 Can a Multivitamin Slow Biological Aging?
We reviewed exciting new research suggesting that taking a quality daily multivitamin may help slow biological aging. We also discussed Fortifeye Complete, our premium multivitamin and eye health formula that has been refined 17 times over the past 20 years.
🫐 A Nutrition Hack Most People Don’t Know
Research suggests that fruits high in polyphenol oxidase (PPO)—such as bananas, apples, pears, and avocados—may reduce the availability of beneficial flavonoids found in berries like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. We explain how to maximize the benefits of these antioxidant-rich foods.
🪥 Should You Brush Before Breakfast?
We discussed research showing that beneficial oral bacteria help convert dietary nitrates into nitric oxide, which supports healthy blood vessels and blood pressure. Using antiseptic mouthwash immediately before eating may interfere with this process.
🚶 Walking for Longevity
Around 8,000 steps per day has been associated with lower mortality, better cardiovascular health, improved cognition, and a lower risk of dementia.
🏋️ Strength Training
As little as 60 minutes of resistance training per week has been associated with improved brain health, better muscle preservation, stronger bones, and reduced mortality.
🚴 Cycling & Pedal-Assist E-Bikes
Cycling remains one of the best low-impact exercises. We also discussed new research showing that pedal-assist e-bikes may improve both physical fitness and psychological well-being because riders still pedal while enjoying longer, more consistent rides.
🍫 AJ Tries Fortifeye FitBites Live
Our engineer AJ tried two Chocolate Raspberry Fortifeye FitBites before the show. Halfway through the broadcast he joined us live, saying they were delicious, his energy improved, and his hunger completely disappeared.

Curcumin for Eye Health, Dry Eye Relief & Healthy Aging | Ask the Doctor with Dr. Michael Lange
On this week’s live edition of Ask the Doctor, Dr. Michael Lange and Dr. Susan Summerton covered a wide range of topics focused on eye health, wellness, healthy aging, and cutting-edge nutritional science.
The show began with exciting news about opportunities at Lange Eye Institute. We discussed hiring scribes and optical sales professionals for both the current Lange Eye Institute in The Villages and the new Lange Eye Institute Ocala, which is scheduled to open January 1, 2027.
A major portion of the program focused on curcumin and its growing role in both systemic and ocular health. Dr. Lange explained why Fortifeye Next Gen Curcumin utilizes Curcugen®, a food-grade oleoresin turmeric extract with dramatically enhanced bioavailability compared to standard curcumin. We discussed how many curcumin supplements rely on black pepper extract (piperine) or synthetic delivery systems to increase absorption, while Curcugen® offers a highly absorbable alternative derived directly from turmeric.
The discussion expanded into the many potential benefits of curcumin, including its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We reviewed emerging evidence supporting curcumin’s role in retinal health, helping reduce oxidative stress, supporting healthy inflammatory pathways, assisting patients with chronic uveitis, supporting dry eye sufferers, and potentially benefiting individuals concerned about cataracts and glaucoma. Curcumin continues to be one of the most promising natural compounds in both eye care and overall wellness.
We also devoted a segment to dry eye disease. If you’ve tried artificial tears, medications, supplements, and other treatments but still suffer from symptoms such as burning, grittiness, sandy sensations, fluctuating vision, tearing, itching, and discomfort, advanced in-office therapies may be the next step. Dr. Lange discussed how Lumenis OptiLight IPL and Lumenis OptiLift radiofrequency treatment can work synergistically to improve meibomian gland dysfunction, reduce inflammation, tighten lax lower eyelids, and provide long-term relief for many chronic dry eye sufferers. These advanced treatments are available at Lange Eye Institute in The Villages.
Another fascinating segment focused on telomeres—the protective end caps of our chromosomes that play a key role in cellular aging. We reviewed research suggesting that regular resistance training may help preserve telomere length and support healthy aging. Studies indicate that as little as 90 minutes of resistance training per week may positively influence biological aging markers. Next week’s program will expand on this topic and discuss additional lifestyle strategies that may help slow chromosomal aging and promote longevity.
As always, the show featured live listener questions and practical health advice designed to help you live a healthier, stronger, and longer life.
Thank you for joining us on Ask the Doctor with Dr. Michael Lange and Dr. Susan Summerton. Be sure to subscribe, like, and share this episode, and join us next week for another live discussion on health, nutrition, wellness, longevity, and eye care.

Today's Ask the Dr. was an outstanding discussion focused on the natural management of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal health, healthy aging, and the latest advances in nutrition and photobiomodulation therapy.
Joined by guest host Roger P. Schulman, we explored the growing body of evidence supporting the role of nutrition, lifestyle, weight management, exercise, and targeted supplementation in helping support retinal health and visual function.
During the program, I shared insights gained from more than 300,000 patient encounters throughout my career, primarily caring for older adults affected by age-related macular degeneration and other retinal diseases. We discussed my involvement in DNA studies related to AMD, SpectraCell micronutrient testing, Omega Index research, and the BLAZE Study (Beta-Carotene, Lutein, Alpha-Carotene and Zeaxanthin Absorption Study), which demonstrated that beta-carotene can interfere with the absorption of lutein and zeaxanthin—two critical carotenoids for macular health.
With academic training in psychology, physiological optics, optometry, and certification as a nutrition specialist, I explained how these experiences helped shape the development of Fortifeye Next Gen Macular Defense and Fortifeye Next Gen Zinc-Free Macular Defense. These formulations have evolved through 17 reformulations and continue to evolve as new scientific evidence emerges. My philosophy has always been that nutritional science is constantly advancing, and nutritional supplementation should advance with it.
We also discussed the exciting field of photobiomodulation therapy for AMD, including the technologies currently offered by Alcon Valeda Light Therapy and MD Elite. Several callers shared positive experiences and testimonials regarding red light, yellow light, and near-infrared light therapy for retinal health.
In addition, we announced that Fortifeye Fit Pro Ultimate Muscle Fuel is officially back in stock. We also reviewed the benefits of Fortifeye Fit Meal and Fortifeye Super Omega, emphasizing the importance of proper protein intake, omega-3 fatty acids, muscle preservation, healthy aging, and overall wellness.
Finally, we announced that Lange Eye Institute is actively hiring as we continue our expansion, including opportunities at our current locations and our upcoming Ocala facility.
Thank you to all of our listeners and callers who made today's program informative, engaging, and inspiring. Your questions, experiences, and testimonials continue to make Ask the Dr. one of the most interactive and educational health programs in America.

Protecting Muscle & Health While Using GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications with Dr. Michael Lange & Dr. Susan Summerton. On today’s edition of Ask the Dr, Dr. Michael Lange and Dr. Susan Summerton opened the show with exciting news about the continued expansion of the Lange brand. Dr. Lange announced that Lange Eye Institute is expanding into the Ocala area after purchasing the historic 1939 Coca-Cola Bottling Plant in Ocala, Florida. The iconic landmark is being transformed into the future home of Lange Eye Institute Ocala, a state-of-the-art eye care center that will feature some of the latest technology for diagnosing, treating, and managing eye disease and optimizing visual performance.
The discussion also focused on the rapid growth and expansion of Fortifeye Vitamins and the company’s continued development of science-based nutritional supplements designed to help support total body wellness, muscle health, cognitive function, metabolism, and healthy aging.
Dr. Lange and Dr. Summerton emphasized that one of the biggest nutritional mistakes many people make is failing to consume enough high-quality protein, especially at breakfast. Dr. Lange described his own breakfast from this morning, which included eggs, red bell peppers, mushrooms, pomegranate, and a nutrient-packed beverage made with spring water, chocolate Fortifeye Rejuvenate, Fortifeye Creapure® Creatine + myHMB® + Vitamin D, along with one Fortifeye Focus supplement.
The doctors discussed how creatine and myHMB are not only important for muscle growth and strength, but also may play a major role in brain health, cognition, metabolism, recovery, and healthy aging. Dr. Lange explained the importance of using German-made Creapure® creatine, emphasizing that if a creatine supplement does not specifically say “Creapure®,” it typically originates from China. He discussed how Fortifeye’s formula combines creatine, myHMB®, and vitamin D in a synergistic ratio designed to maximize muscle protein synthesis, support fat metabolism, help combat myostatin activity, and optimize cognitive benefits.
The conversation then shifted into GLP-1 medications and the growing concerns regarding potential side effects. Dr. Lange and Dr. Summerton discussed how some adverse events may not be solely caused by the medication itself, but may instead be related to underlying health conditions, dehydration, nutrient deficiencies, muscle wasting, and rapid weight loss. They discussed concerns such as sarcopenia, “Ozempic face,” dehydration, and even ischemic optic neuropathy.
The doctors focused heavily on science-based strategies to combat the negative effects often associated with aggressive weight loss programs and GLP-1 drugs. They emphasized the importance of maintaining muscle mass through proper protein intake, resistance training, hydration, targeted nutritional supplementation, and consuming carbohydrates strategically — especially after workouts when muscles are primed to replenish glycogen stores and recover.
Dr. Lange explained why carbohydrates are not the enemy and discussed the importance of post-workout carbohydrate intake for muscle recovery, hormone balance, metabolism, and performance. The doctors also discussed some of the potential negative consequences associated with long-term ketogenic dieting, chronic fasting, and excessive cold plunges when taken to extremes. They explained that many trends marketed as “healthy” may actually create hormonal imbalance, nutrient deficiencies, loss of muscle mass, metabolic slowdown, and accelerated aging if not approached correctly.
The show also highlighted the concept of “skinny fat,” where individuals lose weight rapidly but also lose valuable muscle tissue, leaving them appearing frail, weak, wrinkled, and metabolically unhealthy. To combat this growing problem, Dr. Lange discussed the development of the Fortifeye Fit Transformation System, designed to help individuals lose unhealthy body fat while maintaining muscle mass, skin integrity, strength, and overall vitality.
The program concluded with Dr. Lange announcing that the highly anticipated Fortifeye Fit Pro is finally back in stock and available again in two flavors after being on back order.
This episode of Ask the Dr delivered a powerful message centered around science-based nutrition, muscle preservation, brain health, healthy aging, strategic supplementation, and the critical importance of adequate protein intake — especially for individuals using GLP-1 medications or following aggressive weight loss programs.

ASK THE DR – The Truth About Brain Health, Weight Loss, Omega-3 Scams & Colorectal Cancer Prevention
Today on Ask the Dr, Dr. Michael Lange and guest host Roger P. Schulman covered some of the most important health topics affecting Americans today.
We started the show discussing cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease, and the lifestyle strategies that research suggests may help support long-term brain health. Dr. Lange talked about the importance of walking 5,000–7,500 steps daily, resistance training at least twice a week, and especially training the legs several times weekly to help support cognition and healthy aging.
The conversation then shifted to nutrition for the brain, including the benefits of carotenoids such as lutein, zeaxanthin, and astaxanthin for working memory and cognitive performance. Dr. Lange also discussed the science behind Fortifeye Focus & Brain and the importance of Cognizin® citicoline, a patented and clinically studied form of citicoline that may help support focus, memory, and brain function.
We also discussed the alarming rise in colorectal cancer, especially in younger adults, and why it has become one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in men under 50. Topics included the importance of diet, exercise, hydration, quality sleep, maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing inflammation to help create a healthier internal environment.
That naturally led into a discussion on healthy weight management and body composition. Dr. Lange explained how maintaining lean muscle while reducing excess body fat is critical for overall wellness and longevity. We discussed the Fortifeye Fit Meal and the Fortifeye Fit Transformation System™, which combines:✔️ Fortifeye Fit Meal✔️ Fortifeye Rejuvenate✔️ Fortifeye Creapure® Creatine + myHMB® + Vitamin D
This doctor-developed system was designed to help support healthy weight loss, muscle development, recovery, and healthy skin, hair, nails, and joints—all at the same time.
We also revisited one of today’s hottest topics in nutrition: Omega-3 scams. Dr. Lange explained why many products containing green-lipped mussel, squid oil, krill oil, and other marine oils often provide extremely low, non-therapeutic amounts of omega-3 fatty acids and frequently fail to clearly disclose EPA and DHA levels on the label.
Dr. Lange discussed why he recommends high-potency re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) omega-3 formulas like Fortifeye Super Omega and Fortifeye Super Omega-3 Max, which are among the purest and most potent omega-3 formulations available.
The show also featured many live callers, testimonials, and great questions from listeners across the country.
