This week Ken chats with Stacey Roshan and we talk about her new book “Tech with Heart“, her history as an educator, stakeholders in learning, trust in relationships, on the unattainable ideal of “the perfect student”, anorexia nervosa, failure as a piece of the learning process and so much more.

Stacey is a pioneer in the flipped learning community who started flipping her math class in 2010. I decided to dig into a particular chapter from her book: “The Perils of Perfectionism” and I am really glad that we went straight to that topic.

Stacey Roshan is Director of Innovation & Educational Technology at Bullis School and author of Tech with Heart: Leveraging Technology to Empower Student Voice, Ease Anxiety, & Create Compassionate Classrooms. She is passionate about bringing innovative tools into the classroom to create a safe learning environment for all students to find their voice and build confidence. Her work has been featured in USA Today, The Washington Post, CNN and PBS Newshour. She has also been named Teacher of the Future by NAIS. In addition to teaching high school students to love and understand math, Stacey works closely with faculty to design tech-infused lessons aimed at providing the optimal learning environment for all students.

Karen Costa has over 15 years of higher education experience and formerly served as the Director of Student Success at Mount Wachusett Community College. Karen is currently an adjunct faculty member teaching college success strategies and research skills to online students at multiple institutions. She is also involved in various faculty development initiatives including as a facilitator for Faculty Guild. Karen is a staff writer for Women in Higher Education. Her writing has also appeared in Inside Higher Education, The Philadelphia Inquirer, On Being, and Faculty Focus. Her forthcoming book, 101 Tips for Creating Simple and Sustainable Educational Videos will be published by Stylus Publishing in 2020.Karen graduated with honors from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. She holds a Master of Education in Higher Education from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership from Northeastern University. A proud lifelong learner, Karen will complete her Certificate in Neuroscience, Learning, and Online Instruction from Drexel University in 2020. Karen is also a certified yoga teacher and Level 1 Yoga for Arthritis teacher. She lives in Massachusetts with her family.

This week Ken joins Troy Cockrum to discuss blended learning, vlogging, student video  creation, podcasting and what he is up to lately. Troy was the original host of The Flipped Learning Podcast (produced audio archives and YouTube channel) and produced 142+ episodes and then rebooted itself for another 17 episodes with a new name of Flipped Learning Remixed. Most of the episodes featured Troy’s co-host Joan Brown. Troy is a published author of two of his own books as well as chapters in other books on flipped learning. Links in the notes below.

Troy was one of my first contacts in the flipped learning community, is a such a generous colleague and I owe so much to him and others who welcomed me into this community. I even joined Troy and Joan on episode 93 of their podcast back in 2014 after I attended FlipCon14 in Mars, PA, USA.

He is the Instructional Technology Director for a high school in Indiana. Formerly, he was the Director of Innovative Teaching for a K-8 school in Indianapolis.  Before that, he was a Middle School English teacher, Yearbook Adviser, Musical Director, and Speech Team coach.

He is the author of “Flipping Your English Class to Reach All Learners” and specializes in incorporating technology in the classroom.  He has successfully infused technology into his Language Arts Curriculum and has presented and trained others across the country on doing the same.  He is a recognized leader in the Flipped Class movement.

 

In July of 2011, Mr. Cockrum was selected to attend the Google Teacher Academy in Seattle where he became a Google Certified Teacher.  In 2013, he was a recipient of the Jacobs Educator Award from Indiana University recognizing innovative ways to use inquiry and technology in the classroom.  In 2015, he was selected as one of only 28 educators to be part of NASA’s Airborne Astronomy Ambassador Program and got to fly in the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy.

About our Guest

Keith Hughes is an educator, youtuber and innovator in the field of technology and education. He graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Social Studies Education from Buffalo State College and obtained his Masters in Educational Technology from the University of Buffalo.

Keith taught U.S. History and Government and Advanced Placement American Government at McKinley High School in Buffalo, NY for 14 years before taking on the role of a district instructional technology coach in 2014. He was the lead instructor for UB’s City Voices, City Visions which trained over 300 educators in the art of digital storytelling and DV integration. Over the course of his teaching career he has delivered over 100 Professional Development workshops across the United States.

In 2007, Keith became one of the earliest adopters of the “flipped” class with the creation of HipHughes History on a new platform called YouTube. With over 500 video lectures spanning the Social Studies, current events and pedagogy, HipHughes History has amassed over 30 million views and hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide. In 2012 YouTube and Khan Academy named him, along with ten other educators from around the world, as a “Next Edu Guru”.

Keith has served as an adjunct professor of New Literacies at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Buffalo since 2008, teaching Digital Literacy, New Literacies and Technology and Advanced Methodologies in the Social Studies. He has also appeared on the History Channel’s “United Stuff of America”, “Presidential Transition of Power”, the Travel Channel’s, “Mystery at the Museum” and AHC’s “America’s Most Badass” as an on air expert. Keith has recently contributed to Pearson’s new Project Imagine U.S. History program as a video host for the topic modules and immersive activities.

When Keith isn’t engaging students and his fellow educators in person he can be found filming roller derby games, working on his website and tweeting out #teachertips on Twitter.

This week Ken joins Sarah Thomas, PhD to discuss her work projects. Sarah is an amazing educator who has done excellent work in flipped and blended learning but the work that I find the most important is her founding of the EduMatch project to help educators connect globally. We talk about her work with that project, her transition from the classroom to spending more time working with educators, listening to podcasts at 3 time speed, sharing on the web, self care and more.

There were a few audio issues (totally my fault, I am still learning). I tried to edit to make it not sound like we were cutting each other off but audio editing is difficult! Sorry Sarah!

Working on not having so much time between recording and releasing. My comments on not spoiling her “upcoming” talk sends me to guilt-land for taking so long on these productions. If you do get a chance to see Sarah speak, I highly recommend it. I’ve heard so many great comments about her talks. This episode interview was recorded on December 1st, 2018.

Sarah-Jane Thomas, PhD is a Regional Technology Coordinator in Prince George’s County Public Schools.  Sarah is also a Google Certified Innovator, Google Education Trainer, and founder of the EduMatch project, which promotes connection and collaboration among educators around the world.  Through EduMatch, Sarah has published several collaborative and individual books, and serves as President on the Board of Directors for EduMatch Foundation, Inc. Sarah is also on the leadership team of the ISTE Digital Equity PLN, and Affiliate Faculty at Loyola University in Maryland. Sarah is a co-author of the ISTE publication series, Closing the Gap, focusing on digital equity.

Sarah graduated from George Mason University with a doctoral degree in Education, and a concentration in International Education.  She also holds a Master’s degree from Howard University in the field of Curriculum and Instruction.

Sarah was designated an ASCD Emerging Leader in 2016, and was named Prince George’s County Public Schools Outstanding Educator Using Technology in 2015.  She was named by the National School Board Association as one of the “20 to Watch” in 2015. She was part of the Technical Working Group that refreshed the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for Educators in 2016-2017, and in 2017, she received the ISTE “Making IT Happen” Award.
