On Butterflies of Wisdom today, Best-Selling Author, Win Kelly Charles welcomes Dave Sanderson. A business meeting that ended early... That’s how it all began on January 15, 2009, for Dave, a top-notch tech sales manager who spent more time on the road than he wanted, away from his wife and four children. He had finished work sooner than anticipated and wanted to get home. It was the least he could do to make up for the time he spent working two jobs trying to make a better life for them all. He called his travel agent, who was able to procure a seat for him on an earlier flight departing from New York’s LaGuardia Airport for Charlotte, North Carolina. Sanderson boarded, moved down the aisle to seat 15A, and fastened his seatbelt for taking. The night had been delayed as an earlier blizzard in the area cleared. Now it was cold and bright and clear, a perfect day for flying. A few moments later, what happened to US Airways Flight 1549 was to become known around the world as The Miracle on the Hudson. On its initial climb, a rock of Canada geese collided with the Airbus 320, crippling both engines. Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger knew he couldn’t make it to any of the nearby airports, and there was only one option left: to attempt a water landing and put the plane down safely in the Hudson River. The passengers heard the Captain’s words over the PA system -- “Brace for impact” – and then the plane crashed. In his window seat, Sanderson ascertained how quickly he could get to an exit as the plane started taking on water. But then he heard his late mother’s voice in his head: “If you do the right thing, God will take care of you.” So he made the right choice, staying behind to help people who needed help get o the plane rest. As one of the last passengers on the plane, Sanderson realized that if the Airbus sank, he might be sucked down into it. He had no other choice but to take a leap of faith...on this day, literally and guratively. Sanderson plunged into the frigid 36-degree waters of the Hudson and started to swim to the nearest rescue ferry heading toward the scene. As the last of his strength ebbed, he was pulled aboard, taken ashore, and rushed to the hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia and an eye injury from exposure to jet fuel. Microscopic time had elapsed from crash to rescue to his trip to the hospital, where the medical sta was concerned that he might die. “It took only 30 minutes for my life to change forever,” Sanderson said. He explains it in the simplest of terms: an extraordinary event that changed the life of one ordinary person forever. To learn more about Dave visit http://davesandersonspeaks.com/. On Butterflies of Wisdom today, Best-Selling Author, Win Kelly Charles welcomes Kyle Bryant. Kyle was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) at age seventeen and found that as the disease progressed he had to give up the sports so interwoven in his life growing up in Northern California; sports such as golf, baseball, basketball and football. When Kyle's FA had progressed to a point where it became unsafe for him to continue riding his bike, he put a stop to the loss of the activity he cherished. He took back control, purchased a recumbent trike, and resumed his riding with passion. Kyle started small with an initial ride of 7 miles. However, fueled with a passion for pushing the limits and do more with his life Kyle built up to a century ride (100 mi in a day) within four months of his first ride. Upon completion of his first time, he decided that the sky was the limit. In 2007 Kyle founded Ride Ataxia with a 2,500-mile 59-day ride from San Diego, CA to Memphis TN. The goal of the ride was to raise awareness and much-needed research funds for FA, a disease that has no treatment, no cure, no hope…until now. Kyle and Ride Ataxia did not stop in Memphis. Kyle’s cycling feats include Sacramento to Las Vegas, NV, Portland, OR to Seattle, WA, and completion of Race Across America in which his four-man team finished the 3,000-mile race in 8 days, 8 hours, and 14 minutes. With his trike as the vehicle of change, Kyle took his hopeless situation of no treatment, no cure, no hope and turned it into an opportunity to do something great for himself and many others. In 2009 Kyle became the Spokesperson for the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) in their mission to cure FA. With Kyle as the program director, Ride Ataxia has become FARA’s Marquee fundraising event with challenging yet family friendly bike rides all over the USA – welcoming 2500 participants and raising $800,000 per year. On Butterflies of Wisdom today, Best-Selling Author, Win Kelly Charles welcomes Naomi Williams. Naomi was born in Jeannette, PA and lived there until a preteen. A parental job transfer resulted in Naomi’s family being relocated to Evans, GA as a teenager. She is still adapting to southern life, and will always be a Yankee at heart. Naomi is a class of 2000 graduate from Augusta State University, with a Bachelor’s in Health and Physical Education. After several years in the workforce and becoming a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Naomi continued her education and became a 2008 alumnus of Walden University with a Master’s in Public Health. She is employed at a local hospital as a Family Support Coordinator. Educational and professional experiences have served Naomi well, yet it’s her personal experiences that have validated her credentials. She has always been passionate about empowering others to become their best. It was the traumatic birth and the continued arduous responsibility of raising a medically involved and differently-abled child that fuels Naomi’s passion for advocacy. Naomi has been speaking to allied health, medical and nursing students, physicians, residents, educators, parents and community leaders about the connection and interdependence of raising a differently-abled child as a productive member of society. My signature tag line - She is a health educator by training, entrepreneur by nature and advocate of the best kid ever, Noah Samuel. Fun fact – Naomi became an endurance athlete after Noah’s birth. They have completed two marathons together and countless half marathons, 10k, and 5k races. To learn more about Naomi visit http://www.exceptionalliving101.org/. On Butterflies of Wisdom today, Best-Selling Author, Win Kelly Charles welcomes Michael and Donald Harms. Here is their story. "My wife began to cry, and though she said nothing, I knew exactly why. We were in the middle of a volunteer trip to a children’s home for kids with disabilities in the mountains of Jamaica. We worked separately while there to have the biggest effect and we hadn’t said a word to each other due to overwhelming emotions. But we could sense that we were both experiencing the same thing. Even though I knew the reason for her tears, I held her and asked, “What’s wrong?” “I just love him.” Now I was crying. “I know. I love him too.” We had never said his name to each other. We hadn’t been together with him. We hadn’t even seen each other with him. But we both knew exactly what the other was feeling. We had fallen in love with all the kids at the children’s home, but there was an extraordinary connection with Donald. It was unexplainable and even irrational given that we had only met him briefly and never together. During subsequent trips to Jamaica to establish a school at the home, Donald expressed that he felt the same love for us. After our third trip, our path was clear. We began the official process to adopt Donald. The next two years were a roller coaster filled with mountains of paperwork, a few denials, many appeals, and even more trips to Jamaica. By the grace of God, the three of us (and the many people helping us) persevered and in April of 2013 we brought Donald home as our SON! The transition, while was not without difficulty, was remarkable. It was evident from the start that was all meant to be together. Many said it seemed Donald had been raised by us his whole life. Our personalities were remarkably similar, and our connection was evident. While relatively young and new, our love was profoundly deep. After our first year and many adventures as a family, Donald and I embarked on a new journey. “Dad, I want to run together.” Donald’s eyes beamed enthusiasm; he clearly believed this could be something special. I was no runner but how do I say no? Five days later, Donald, in an old stroller, pulled me along as I pushed with all my might in a 5K. Donald’s cerebral palsy limits the use of his limbs. But, please understand, he is an Athlete. Donald is fiercely dedicated to anything he undertakes. His mental fortitude is inspiring. He simply doesn’t have the body to run. So he allows me the privilege of teaming up with him. Since crossing that finish line two years ago, we’ve competed in dozens of races, including two marathons. We’ve won my age group numerous times and even been on the overall podium. We’re currently training to qualify for Boston. Donald was right; we had found something special! Running has united us in ways I can barely express without tears. But it has also liberated us: me from the stresses of life and, more importantly, Donald from his disability. Donald has communicated that when we run, he forgets he has a disability; he feels like just another runner. That’s enough to ensure we run forever. Our family continues to grow with the addition of Oliver in 2014 and a new Baby Harms due this October. We continue to have many adventures as we make the most of this one wildlife with which God has blessed us. And Donald and I will continue to run fr
