  • Aspect Radio #79: Fall Movie Catch-up, 2012 Awards Blitz

Ben and Corey return to catch up on some major fall movie releases like “Lincoln,” “Argo,” “Skyfall,” “Flight” and Killing Them Softly.”

Both seem to like most of what they’ve seen this fall, especially the latest from Steven Spielberg and 007.

The guys also delve into the awards season madness, on the heels of SAG and Golden Globe nominations. They break down the race and pinpoint the real contenders come Oscar time.

  • Aspect Radio #78: The Master, Looper, Seth MacFarlane Hosts the Oscars

Ben and Corey, joined by Bloomberg producer Graham Flanagan, witness the healing power or total fraud that is Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film “The Master” and make time for Rian Johnson’s third film “Looper.”

In a SPOILER-HEAVY discussion, the guys behold the technical and acting clinics at play in Anderson’s complex tale of aimlessness, manipulation and love in post-WW2 American. There’s no doubt Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman deliver powerful performances, but cracking Anderson’s code proves quite challenging. They all look forward to revisiting.

Graham and Corey dig all or most of Johnson’s time travel thriller, while Ben can only go about halfway in his praise after he feels the story his a narrative brick wall about halfway through. But the concept, effects, performances and clever balancing of timelines make “Looper” a must-see. (Some spoilers)

The guys also react to the news that Seth MacFarlane will host the next Oscars ceremony. While some colleagues think the choice is as bad as the Academy could have made, these three dig it.

  • Aspect Radio #76: Movie Ensembles, The Expendables 2, To Rome with Love, Tony Scott Tribute

Ben and Corey are joined by Graham Flanagan to talk the best, worst and most underrated movie ensembles.

Sparking that discussion is the release of a pair of ensemble works, “The Expendables 2” and Woody Allen’s latest “To Rome with Love.”

The guys are mostly taken with Sylvester Stallone’s vision of B-movie mayhem at the hands of action movie legends (or has-beens, however you see it), at least this time around.

They’re more split on Woody Allen’s latest comedy, though, two of them suggesting the Eternal City-set comedy belongs at the bottom of the filmmaker’s barrel.

They also pay tribute to the late Tony Scott, who recently committed suicide, who gave us so many studio winners like “Top Gun,” “Crimson Tide” and “Enemy of the State.”

  • Aspect Radio #75: Best, Worst & Underrated Movie Comedy Duels

Ben and Corey go mano-a-mano over their favorite movie comedy duels à la the new so-so political comedy “The Campaign,” starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis.

“Election,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Rushmore” and “Bridesmaids” are among the titles listed that featured fantastically bitter movie rivalries. We’d love to hear your favorites, too!

The guys also spend a few minutes on “The Campaign,” agreeing it’s an ultimately unmemorable exercise in absurdity that has enough laughs to survive its breezy running-time.

Rounding it out is a quick discussion on this week’s big Blu-ray releases, including Steven Spielberg’s classic “Jaws,” an absolute favorite of our hosts.

  • Aspect Radio #74: Batman Had Risen…Batman Has Risen Again! Best of Summer 2012

Ben and Corey dive into the pit of Christopher Nolan’s conclusion to his Batman trilogy, “The Dark Knight Rises.”

One thinks Nolan fell short of his previous two Batman movies, while the other thinks its the best one yet, even surpassing its beloved and record-breaking predecessor.

The guys also look at what’s next for the Caped Crusader, mulling over possible casting and directing prospects as well as which villain to launch another reboot with.

Rounding things out, the guys take a look back at their favorite movies from summer 2012, including “Brave,” “Magic Mike,” “Moonrise Kingdom” and “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

  • Aspect Radio #73: Movie Marketing Duds, Moonrise Kingdom, Trailer Talk and More

Ben and Corey talk about modern movie marketing for blockbusters like “Prometheus,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” as well as some fancy new trailers out in the world from Paul Thomas Anderson, James Bond and Ron Burgundy.

Also, is “The Avengers” a box office bully that is hurting Hollywood?

Ben’s brother and Bloomberg producer Graham Flanagan gives us an early look at Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” which he saw on vacation in Paris, France.

The guys also give thoughts on “Django Unchained” and “Iron Man 3” photos and offer their suggestions on who should replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond.

Plus, we hear Parting Shots from FilmNerds.com contributors Matt Scalici, Craig Hamilton and Ben Stark on a Godfather prequel possibility, Black Window’s posterior in “The Avengers” and moral dilemma of crafting your personal top 10 all-time movie list.

  • Aspect Radio #72: The Avengers, Side by Side (from Tribeca), Summer Movie Preview

Ben and Corey assemble for Joss Whedon’s Marvel casserole “The Avengers,” which just cleared $740 million worldwide, so they feel comfortable going into spoiler territory, so beware.

Producer Andrew Richardson chimes in as well, and look, it’s mostly a love fest. There’s little doubt left that Whedon hit a home run, combining Marvel’s major heroes into an amalgam of comic book movie glory.

Ben’s brother and Bloomberg producer Graham Flanagan reports back from the Tribeca Film Festival in New York with a review of the buzzed-about “Side by Side,” a documentary exploring the state of digital vs. film as told by directors and cinematographers like George Lucas, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh and Wally Pfister.

The guys then go week by week, breaking down the rest of the summer movie landscape, offering their picks for must-sees as the season rolls along.

Kicking off a new segment not unlike the “parting shots” you see on the Sunday morning ESPN show “The Sports Reporters” are FilmNerds.com’s Matt Scalici, Craig Hamilton and Ben Stark, who all share something film-related they’ve thought about these past few days.

Finally, the guys pay tribute to Beastie Boys founder and filmmaker to the late Adam Yauch (aka MCA), who contributed so much to music videos as well as independent film with his own films he made as well as the ones he distributed for his studio Oscilloscope Laboratories.

  • Aspect Radio #71: Cabin in the Woods & Contemporary Horror, Three Stooges, Revisiting The Raid

Ben and Corey take a trip to “The Cabin in the Woods,” where filmmakers Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon write a love/hate letter to their beloved horror genre.

One loves it, while the other likes a lot about it but has issues with the mixed tone and the film’s knack for using the same tired horror conventions it chastises the genre for using in recent years.

They also dig into “The Three Stooges,” though there ain’t that far to dig. But, surprise, they both like Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s tribute. Nyuk, nyuk.

Closing the show, they revisit the Indonesian action movie sensation “The Raid: Redemption,” agreeing it belongs among the ranks of John Woo’s finest works like “Hard Boiled” and “The Killer.”
