In this series on racism and allyship in surgery, a panel of women surgeons discusses the role of individuals and organizations in addressing the impacts of racism on surgeons and patients.
Part 2 addresses racial disparities in surgery which affect patients and surgeons. The panel discusses actions that individuals and organizations can take to address them.
The panel is moderated by AWS President and Associate Professor of Surgery at CWRU School of Medicine Dr. Sharon Stein and AWS He for She Committee Chair and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Dr. Salewa Oseni.

Dr. Arghavan Salles discusses traveling to New York to aid in the care of COVID-19 patients in a temporary intensive care unit. She also discusses how the setup was different from ICUs prior to the pandemic. With host Dr. Rena Malik, she explores the impact of providing care in this situation on the mental health of providers.
In addition, they discuss how gender issues in sizing of personal protective equipment may impact the ability of healthcare workers to find appropriate equipment.

Dr. Preeti John shares how medical ethics apply to patient care in the current COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more about the Association of Women Surgeons from the organization leaders. This episode features Dr. Patricia Martinez Quinones discussing the benefits of AWS membership for residents. She shares her own experience finding mentors, role models, and sponsors as well as a support system. That support system was especially important when her family suffered during Hurricane Maria. Her participation in the AWS Coaching Project taught her the importance of being vulnerable and introspective as part of personal development.
