"At the Edge of it All" was joined by Andrew Biros, Associate Director of Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship at USD's Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies. He talked about his path into the social innovation and entrepreneurship field and the importance of social innovation in today's society, especially with the increasing use of artificial intelligence. He also spoke about the Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge, a popular international student competition which takes place this year on May 4, 2024 at USD.

In competitive running, one person wins and others come up short, so how do you measure success? Longtime USD Cross Country coach Will Guarino joined “At the Edge of It All” to talk about the mentality of runners — both competitors and amateurs. He shared his journey as a child who immigrated to the U.S., as well as his struggle to take care of his family after losing both parents to cancer. He explained how running kept him going through all the highs and the lows.

Crisis management is about preparation. That's one of the big takeaways from our talk with Corinne Hoare, lecturer of marketing at USD, who joined "At the Edge of It All" to discuss her wide-ranging career and crisis communications. Doing your homework and having a plan in place is key, Hoare said, to being prepared for situations that threaten to upend you or your business. She talked about what it was like to work in communications at the White House, and the pressure that entailed, and what she's teaching future leaders about how to handle a crisis.

Craig Barkacs, professor of business law, joined "At the Edge of It All" to talk about his career path, which includes everything from being a trial attorney to running for congress. Barkacs also talks about the ways in which people can have power and influence in the workplace and he provides advice for those looking to grow in their career.

This week, “At the Edge of It All” was joined by USD law professor Lisa Ramsey, an expert on trademark law who teaches intellectual property law classes. Ramsey talked about how trademark laws can potentially conflict with the right to freedom of expression and fair competition. She also recounted several U.S. Supreme Court cases about First Amendment challenges to trademark laws, and discussed copyright and trademark issues that may arise when artificially-intelligent computer programs are used to create text or images.

Brandon Moore, head coach of the University of San Diego Football program, joined "At the Edge of It All" to talk about what inspired him to play football, eventually winning a national championship in college and playing for the NFL. Moore also spoke about how he transitioned from playing football to coaching the sport, and his goals for the team here at USD.

"At the Edge of It All" was joined by USD Women's Soccer Head Coach Greg LaPorte, who told the story of his playing career, which took him from San Diego all the way to some of the highest levels of soccer in England. Then he discussed an injury that cut his playing career short, but opened up a new path to coaching that brought him back to his hometown San Diego.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll find there’s much more to dirt than meets the eye. Claudia Avila, assistant professor of environmental and ocean sciences, joined “At the Edge of It All” to talk about her research on soil and how it goes beyond science. She talks about the unique cultural perspective she brings to the field, coming from a family of farmworkers. She talks about how their experience and her heritage inform her work, how she fell in love with soil and gardening to begin with, and how she’s trying to ignite that passion in future generations.

This week, “At the Edge of It All” was joined by Michel Boudrias, associate professor of ocean and environmental sciences. The discussion was a journey in itself, charting Boudrias’ course from being a young fan of Jacques Cousteau to diving to the depths of the ocean himself and studying how shrimp swim. He also talked about what drove him from a niche scientific passion to becoming a champion of sustainability and environmental justice.
