        • Ep 10: Dona Kay Rule - Barreling through Rodeos: Lessons from a Cowgirl

Dona Kay Rule is a cowgirl, wife, mother and grandmother and at an age when most rodeo champions decide to retire, Dona decided to jump right in and now 65 year old Dona is among the top barrel racers in the world and has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) four times. Dona Kay travels with her horse Valor and Rosie. It’s hard to say who is more famous, Valor, Dona Kay, or Rodeo Rosie, a miniature Australian Shepherd.

I was fortunate to meet Dona at the National Final Rodeo in Vegas where my husband hosted a breakfast for the team they sponsored. I instantly gravitated towards Dona's humility and positive demeanor and invited her to be my guest at Atalanta Diaries to share her inspiring journey and Dona was very gracious.

The year gone by has been Dona’s best rodeo season so far, even though it hasn’t been the easiest. At the 2021 NFR she was struggling with hip pain and soon after setting a new arena record at 13.96 seconds she made the decision to have surgery. Within 7 weeks of a total hip replacement, Dona loaded up her great horse, High Valor, and headed to Canada, won the 2nd at the Calgary stampede and proceeded to lock in the No. 2 position in the WPRA World Standings.

This trio has put smiles on the faces of rodeo fans across North America since she qualified for her first Wrangler NFR in 2019.

                Some insights from this episode:

                • If things are not going your way, recognize and accept it and while you're waiting, gain some new skills because one day, you will get out of the challenge and have an extra skill.
                • The biggest illusion is that life is just going in one direction, which is up. Life is like pockets of enormous happiness and all in between.
                • Success comes in waves; resilience, persistence, and how you use your energy and what you do in downtime as well as uptime matters.
                • One of the important things when you come to negotiations is that you do not bring your own luggage to the room, or else you will never be able to see the reality.
                • IQ is the supporting function of emotions because actually we make choices based on our emotional reactions, and that is the key to our decision-making. If you can combine analytical risk management skills, which are going very fast, with a high awareness of where the emotional reaction is coming from, you actually combine the best of both worlds.
                • Sometimes people don't like us because they just don't like us, and sometimes they do. Whether they do or don't, just focus on your job and what you can achieve. It's not your job to change the world by arguing with the world. Change the world by doing what you are doing.

Prior to launching her own company, Samosa stories, Swati was Executive Vice President at Imagine Entertainment and moved to the US in 2016 as Netflix's first employee from India. Her most recent success is the release of the much-loved Netflix Original movie, The Wedding Season.

In this episode, Swati shares her courageous leadership journey as a film producer, her experience working and living in the US, and how she creates a brave and beautiful life for herself.

                  Some insights from this episode:

                  • People with a wrong sense of power love it when others are afraid. They love to make people afraid. Don't fall for that because life doesn't begin and end with one episode.
                  • We are all global citizens. We could be anywhere, the environment around us could change, we just need to be open to adapt.
                  • It is not necessary that because somebody is older they have more wisdom, or because we are older than someone we are wiser than them.
                  • Everything doesn't need to be hard. If you know that something's worth it and you wanna go after it, definitely do it , but not everything needs to be that hard.
                  • Hire people smarter and better than you only then will you learn and grow.

                    Some insights from this episode:

                    • Being different is special. You are unique, and it's a tremendous skill. You fit in almost everywhere you can. You can fit yourself in because you know you. You are already aware of how to survive in these different cultures.
                    • If you want to assimilate into the majority culture, just let yourself go, and you will assimilate. But if you want to maintain your home culture, your traditions, which many minorities have, you have to work for it.
                    • If somebody gives you a task, just say yes. You can figure out how later.
                    • Not everybody is going to love you. If you want to get into leadership, you have to develop a thick skin.
                    • If you see a path as a leader and want to have a family, you need to make sure you have support. Whether it's from your partner or whether you hire somebody to be that support at home.
                    • Sometimes it's not just a matter of the amount of work you do; it's about communication, networking, putting yourself out there, and being visible.
                    • Grab the book A Holocaust Memoir of Love & Resilience: Mama's Survival from Lithuania to America by Dr. Ettie Zilber

                    • Ep 4: Claude Pellerin: The Multi-sensory Artist and Restaurateur

Claude Pellerin, owner of ‘The French Lady’,  a charming French restaurant in Birmingham, Michigan  was born in Nord-Pas-de-Calais.  Claude is well-versed in the diverse cuisines from her home country, and  provides authentic tastes of France. Cooking, baking and entertaining are her passions and she prepares each meal from scratch with not just love and care, but with technique and expertise.

Claude is a classically trained harpist who has performed internationally, and had a musical career that spanned decades.

Talented and hardworking, Claude is selfless and goes out of her way to make people feel welcome, at home, and appreciated and holds herself, her food, and her restaurant to consistently high standards.

After spending some years of her twenties in Boston, she moved back to France, always knowing deep down that she wanted to be in the States.

Her menu has names of the women who crafted her cuisine: her grandmother Germaine, her mother Danièle, sisters Agnès and Estelle, and Lucie, and many more.

Taking pride in respecting tradition and family heirloom to the letter, Claude doesn’t shop in wholesale houses but prefers local stores and farms, choosing quality and love over profit and standardization.

Her biggest joy is in connecting with people.

                      Some insights from this episode:

                      • The French Lady is her brain child, her tribute to her grandmother. She didn't want any investor to come and tell her to make ‘burgers’, because that's what sells.
                      • She has no recipes in writing. They are all in her head. She sees a movie of her grandmother making it and just reaches out to the right ingredient when it's time to put it.
                      • She learnt patience from her mother and became a gifted chef because of her grandmother. You don't throw food, it's a sin. You transform leftovers into something else and create a feast with nothing because you don’t waste.
                      • She and her son complete each other, she brings tradition and he brings technique. They never want to work against each other, instead want to support each other.
                      • She hires for passion and attitude, not for skill and training, because then it will not be the Claude way and gets difficult and frustrating.
