Atkins Labcast

David Hume is the inaugural winner of the SALA SOLO Photographic Opportunity.

This art ‘prize’ was devised by Paul Atkins, Gavin Blake and Patty Chehade as a collaborative opportunity to develop and show a new body of work with the guidance of all three of the above institutions. The prize directly includes mentoring from Gavin Blake of the Centre for Creative Photography (CCP) the printing and framing of the artwork but Atkins Lab, and the staging of the exhibition at Praxis Art Space.

David lept on the opportunity, and we are only days away from the exhibition opening as part of the South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA).

This interview with David tells the story of him tackling the opportunity, it’s loaded with helpful guidance for any artist wanting success in their field.

This week Rowena joins Paul for a bunch of pointy questions aiming to find out how she has developed her family documentary photography work.

Rowena works from Melbourne, but is regularly invited to shoot around Australia and overseas. Her unique style engages in the righteous struggle to bring a warm reality to the photography of family life.

Paul & Kym from Refocus Retreat

In the first interview recorded in a year or more, Paul talks with Kym Vulling from the Refocus Retreat.

Kym’s event was first run in 2014, it is a female focussed conference that has survived the ons and offs of COVID and the challenges that our representative industry bodies have been through.

Paul attended the event in April 2022 and had a blast, and he cannot recommend it enough. With speakers presenting their work, discussing business, and sharing techniques, and a small trade show (where Atkins will have a table!) it is a feast of information on photography. This year it is being run concurrently with the Ballarat International Photo Bienale, a month long festival, both of which, should not be missed.

The Adelaide Fringe Festival was in town and Paul sat down with Sydney based festival and event photographer Robert McGrath. Robert has been covering Fringe Festivals as both a photographerr for many years and has added writing to broaden his offerings. Robert’s approach is unique as he strives to get behind the canned PR that is typical in theatre, and delve deeper into the performances. This is a pivotal time for festivals and events, and Robert sees it burgeoning with opportunity.

Lead by Gavin Blake, it is a heroic undertaking to bring a group of students through the process of staging a truly cohesive show.
