Attaboy Clarence

Welcome back to an all-new series of Attaboy Clarence!

This time we're taking a much-needed dive into the Question Pot!

I'm asking what else the fabulous John "Wooden" Loder was up to in 1945 (aside from starring in the greatest movie ever about an amnesiac actor who kills people in Brighton and then walks off a roof to his death AND being married to Hedy Lamarr) - the answer may surprise you...

Radio thrills come courtesy of a peculiar thriller about a hidden fortune...

And there's even time for a special Top Five!

Let's start the new year off right, with a visit to Old Hollywood, and in the company of two very different movies...

The first is a curious experience - a drama masquerading as a musical comedy, but featuring little of either, and an uneasy voyage into some questionable attitudes of the day...

The second is a startling thriller featuring a taut plot, a high-level stakeout, and the debut of an actress who would go on to become something of a legend... (clue: she's still with us today)

Radio entertainment this time is a double-billed featuring one of cinema's most iconic duos!

There is something so special about history and its figures seen through the eyes and the storytelling techniques of Old Hollywood. Take this edition's movies for instance, two history lessons told with all the style and panache that only Hollywood could muster.

I'll tell you all about the birth of the news itself in the company of Edward G Robinson, and then we're off to a most remarkable town run by a most remarkable Spencer Tracy...

Before we step into the shadows of Halloween, it's time for one last glimpse of sunshine, as I whirl you through the back catalogue of Joan Blondell!

I've got two Joanie movies to tell you about, including a romantic crime thriller set in the fast-moving world of telephone... engineering...? And then we're off to Paris, as Joan puts into action a series of schemes designed to teach a haughty royal a lesson about how to treat girls.

Radio entertainment this time comes courtesy of the Lux Radio Theatre, and a rare comedic outing for a very famous pirate...

We're in that strange nether-period, when the lights are drawing low and a chill is in the air. However, it's still slightly too early to jump feet first into Halloween...

So this time round, let me show you around two chilly tales that might keep your inner ghoul satisfied until Spooktober arrives!

First of all, a shadowy, supernaturally-tinged murder mystery with a very famous pair of investigators, and following that, a death note arrives for a very bad man in the shape of a mysterious doll...

Radio entertainment this time comes courtesy of Suspense...

Attaboy Clarence returns with a double-bill of juvenile energy!

Shirley Temple heads up a forerunner of The Parent Trap in 1940's Kathleen, her first role away from curls and lollipops, trying her darnedest to match Herbert Marshall with Laraine Day, while scheming to keep Gail Patrick at bay...

And in Mad About Music, Deanna Durbin's doing the exact opposite - trying to match Herbert Marshall with Gail Patrick, while dealing with school bullies, mistaken identities, and that elusive High C note!

This time around, join me as I present two movies in which the girls are planted squarely at the heart of matters.

In 1939's Within The Law, Ruth Hussey is the wrongfully convicted shopgirl who exacts a diabolical revenge on the big business magnate who showed no mercy.

In 1937's She's Dangerous, a thief turns out to be a double-agent, working for the law to defeat a gang of racketeers, but ending up on trial for a murder she didn't commit!

This time round, I'm paying tribute to one of Old Hollywood's most remarkable character actors - the wonderful Alan Mowbray - and his appearance in two films, in which he played the very same character...

Elsewhere, who knew there was a board dedicated to the survival of cupcakes?

We're dropping in with the What's My Line gang for another round of Who The Hell Is That Hollywood Legend?

And radio entertainment comes courtesy of a very special one-off adaptation of one of history's greatest humorists!

It's spring time, and we're celebrating in the company of some great ladies - Ginger Rogers in a reverse-Cinderella tale set in the opulent world of Park Avenue, and Claire Dodd turning the tables on a gang of conmen trying their best to influence her love life!

There's also a sad note in the air as we say a fond farewell to another grand old lady.
