Attorney General and State Controller Race | Sacramento County School Board Candidates | Latino Center of Art and Culture’s “Día de los Muertos” celebration

Listen Later

A breakdown of two key state-wide races for the Attorney General and State Controller. A survey of where school board candidates for Sacramento County’s largest school districts stand on key issues. The Latino Center of Art and Culture is hosting a three-day Día de los Muertos celebration.

Attorney General & State Controller race

Two of the biggest statewide races this midterm election will have a considerable impact on California’s approach to criminal justice and the check-and-balance of the state’s finances. In the race for Attorney General, incumbent Rob Bonta is facing off against Republican Nathan Hochman, a former federal prosecutor who practices law in Southern California. The two candidates have deeply opposing views regarding public safety, an issue top-of-mind for many voters across the state. And the race for a less publicized (or understood) statewide position is garnering a lot of attention: State Controller. Democrat Malia Cohen, the first black woman elected to the state’s Board of Equalization, is running against Republican Lahnee Chen, a policy expert who is the son of Taiwanese immigrants and formerly served under both the Obama and George W. Bush administrations. Both Republican candidates have expressed optimism they could achieve something their party hasn’t accomplished in over 15 years, win a statewide office. But both face steep uphill battles in ending this statewide slump. Ben Christopher, a political reporter for CalMatters, joined Insight to help unpack both big races.

Sacramento County School Board Candidates

The ballot this year is filled with local measures and races. On today's Insight, we focused on an office that doesn't receive as much awareness but, in recent years, has experienced growing attention from parents. School board races. In Sacramento County, ten school districts will have elections this fall, and a growing number of candidates are parents. CapRadio (in partnership with the Sacramento Observer) interviewed each candidate on specific topics to give voters a deeper understanding of where they stand on issues such as the achievement gap and race and equity. Srishti Prabha, CapRadio's Sacramento Education reporter, joins Insight to share what they found.

Día de los Muertos

The Latino Center of Art & Culture is celebrating 50 years, having been a staple in Sacramento since 1972. What began as a humble Latino-focused bookstore has grown by leaps and bounds over the decades to include events and exhibits. The center will host a three-day event, "El Panteon De Sacramento," celebrating "Dia De Los Muertos" this weekend. The center's executive director Carissa Gutiérrez joined insight to tell us more about the history of "The Latino Center of Art & Culture" and the event this weekend.
