In Episode 9 of The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, titled "Nemesis", the narrative reaches a critical juncture as the investigation into Oliver Whyte's murder intensifies. Detective Kilsip and barrister Duncan Calton uncover a web of secrets implicating prominent figures in Melbourne's society. A significant revelation emerges: Mark Frettlby had a clandestine marriage with Rosanna Moore, resulting in a daughter, Sal Rawlins. This disclosure threatens to scandalize the Frettlby family, as it implies that Madge, Frettlby's acknowledged daughter, is illegitimate. 

"Mother Guttersnipe Joins the Majority", the narrative delves deeper into the slums of Melbourne, where barrister Duncan Calton, guided by Detective Kilsip, seeks crucial information from the dying Mother Guttersnipe. Calton suspects that Rosanna Moore, Sal Rawlins' mother, is central to the mystery and believes that Mother Guttersnipe may hold vital information. Upon their arrival, they find that Mother Guttersnipe has passed away, taking her secrets with her.

"Across the Walnuts and the Wine", the narrative shifts focus to the Frettlby household following Brian Fitzgerald's acquittal. Despite the conclusion of the trial, new tensions emerge, particularly concerning Mark Frettlby's concealed past. 

In Episode 6 of The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, titled "The Trial", the narrative reaches a pivotal moment as Brian Fitzgerald faces trial for the murder of Oliver Whyte.
