MOROCCO JONES VS. MAFIA, MURDERS, MOLLS, AND MAYHEM

The wheels on the Syndicate's deadliest racket – taking over unions to leverage

the old protection racket on whole industries – have begun to steamroll over
the shipping business in the quiet California town of Pacific Port. They send
    an S.O.S. for the one-man army – P.I. and ex-spy, Morocco Jones.

His name is whispered in secret and in awe – from Budapest to Bangkok, from

Copenhagen to Cairo to Kansas City, Missouri.

He's the toughest, smartest operator ever to work and survive the roughest

racket of them all – overseas counterespionage.

He's the guy who rocked the Mafia on its heels in Chicago, the guy who took

Border City's underworld apart with his bare hands.

The man who's come to take the Cosa Nostra by the throat and end it once and

    for all.

If he survives the baited, one-woman death trap called "the Syndicate's

    Golden Angel."

The final book in the classic series that took the war to the Mafia a decade

before the debut of The Executioner.

    A geek, a nerd and

two tough-as-nails ranch women fight rubber rustlers during WWII – when rubber was
    worth big money!

A masterpiece of screwball romcom from Clarence Budington Kelland, the man who

invented the genre, set against the background of the Homefront during the
Second World War. The Puzzle of Archibald the Great is filled with his trademark
delirious, pixilated battle-of-the-sexes dialogue. Archibald Cloyd was an
ubergeek and as pedantic as it is possible to be. He looked like Napoleon, he
strutted like Napoleon, so naturally, he made himself the world's greatest
expert on the Little Corsican. Naturally, Hollywood hired him at thousands of
dollars a week as the technical director on a movie about Napoleon.

Wilson Page, Cloyd's secretary, was a nerd. He didn’t fit in anywhere, and when

the Air Force turned him down due to a childhood heart problem, Wilson gave up
on life. He figured he didn't deserve anything better than being nursemaid to a
strutting egomaniac like Archibald Cloyd. He looked down on himself and Cloyd
    in equal measure.

But when Archibald fell for a gangster’s moll, the gangster took exception to

the relationship, and the pompous little geek proved too stuck-up to back down
even when faced with torture. Wilson Page discovered he had developed affection
for the pigmy popinjay and swore to extract Cloyd from the situation.

Then the movie company moved to Arizona to shoot desert scenes about Napoleon's

Egyptian venture, and with Archibald now thousands of miles away from the
hot-tempered gangster, Wilson Page breathed a sigh of relief.

But his relief didn't last long. In the desert, Page discovered a complication

he had never dreamed of, when they encountered the Widow Hammer, an outsized
woman with an outsized voice that could call the cattle home from a range
beyond the mountains in a different state, who took a shine to Archibald
because, as she said, "He talks beautiful. He don't always make
sense a body can understand, but the sound of it is lovely."

And matters became even more complicated for Wilson Page when he fell for the

irritating Miss Jemima Ward, a young woman who was used to running her own
ranch, which she had inherited from her father, and looked down on soft men who
earned their keep at soft jobs sitting in chairs, like secretaries to academic
pedants, and looked down even further on young men who were not enlisted and
off fighting in defense of their country against the fascist regimes of Italy
    and Germany.

Just when it looked like things couldn't get more complicated, Page and Jemma

discovered an old abandoned mine filled with a fortune in stolen rubber tires,
one of the homefront's least obtainable and most valuable commodities. And who
did it belong to? The same hot-tempered gangster who had sworn to do the dirty
to Archibald the first chance he got.

    Smoke Wade was riding

to save a friend from hanging ... and he was riding straight into a pack of blood-hungry
    outlaws!

Stampede Canyon held all the natural beauty of the West ... and all of its dangers.

Sheer cliffs studded with silver rose straight to the sky on three sides, and
the fourth was pitted with traps.

Smoke Wade rode into the town at its heart to attend the wedding of his friend,

Chaz Borman. But he stayed to save Borman's neck from a noose.

Borman had been accused of helping outlaws raid silver from the canyon, and the

riled miners were dead-set for a necktie party.

Wade's only hope was to track the real outlaws to their den and fight it out

with lead. But Wade was riding alone, and he was facing some of the deadliest
killers the West had ever known. Smoke Wade was a rough-and-tumble cowpoke who
never came across a fight or a bet he was afraid to take on. He was thought by
most to be just another pistolero for hire, but he always seemed to be on the
side of justice when the powdersmoke settled.

Buried Pirate Treasure and a Wisecracking Heroine Lead to Romance, Adventure and

    Murder in Prohibition-Era Long Island!

Wisecracking Jane Teach had pirate blood, a

take-charge attitude, and a penchant for sticking her nose in the wrong places.
Sober-minded Bill Popple was from one of Long Island's first families, a
conservative-minded young man who walked the straight and narrow. When they met
it was loathing at first sight, definitely not a match made in heaven. But with
six people trying to kill them over a dead bootlegger's lost fortune and a
pirate's treasure secretly buried three hundred years ago, they both needed
    each other.

First Bill Popple, the muscular serious-minded

research student, unearths information which makes the odds high in favor of
pirate gold being hidden long ago on what is now Hartman's property. Then Jane
Teach, the streamlined girl of ready wit, who seems to know more than Bill does
about almost everything, suggests that there may be not one treasure but two,
the first one part of her ancestor's lost loot, the second a bootlegger's
ill-gotten gains. Next, Jane and Bill discover a corpse lying on a beach near Oxbow
Bay with gold pieces sunk into its eye sockets.

Soon the pair find themselves up to their necks in

mystery and dark doings involving the heterogeneous group of strangers who have
appeared suddenly in town to wait and watch for ... what? From then on, Jane and
Bill never experience a dull moment.

How they extricate themselves, and at the same

time solve two deep mysteries, adds up to an absorbing novel of skullduggery
and sudden death in which excitement and romance mount to an increasingly high
pitch and culminate in a wholly satisfying climax.

A SIMPLE HOLLYWOOD BLACKMAIL SCHEME TURNS DEADLY

Morocco Jones figured this assignment would be a breeze. After all, sending a guy who

specialized in busting up crime syndicates and international spy rings to Los
Angeles to track down some two-bit blackmailer seemed like using a cannon to
kill a mosquito. To Morocco, it seemed like a good excuse for a nice little
Hollywood vacation ... catch a bit of sun, bed a few starlets, and relax poolside
with a large snifter of brandy.

    But Morocco

couldn't have been more wrong! Because this was no two-bit blackmail scheme.
The half-a-billion-dollar payoff ... for whoever was behind the plot ... was money
worth killing for. From the moment Morocco Jones hit fabulous movieland, things
began to explode in some very strange and terrifying directions.

    First, there was

the reception committee of musclemen who waylaid Morocco in the dark right
outside his client's fancy Spanish villa. Next was the ex-hood who had become
high priest of a powerful and sinister religious cult that didn't draw the line
even at murder when it came to keeping its secrets secret. Then, there was the
scandal sheet that raked in the do-re-mi from the studios ... for the truly
scandalous stories it didn't print about Screenland's kings and queens. Add in
a crooked cop named Doheny who didn't like Morocco's lip, and the unsolved
double murder of a famous screen beauty and her husband that tied into it all
somehow. Nor could Morocco overlook the incendiary blonde starlet in the oh-so
revealing dress who seemed to have slept with half his suspects and was always
one step ahead of him, wherever he went.

    There were a lot of

angles to figure, even for an operative like Morocco Jones. His only hope of
solving it was a lush out cold from a 10-day bender and a raw cub reporter who
looked more destined to end up being written about in the obits than getting
his by-line on the story of the year ... when and if it broke. This was a case with
the distinct odor of an organized blackmail ring with syndicate tie-ups.

MURDER AND SKULLDUGGERY ABOUND BEHIND THE SCENES IN EARLY TV

In one of the first crime novels ever set behind the scenes of big-time television, Clarence Budington Kelland has plotted a thrilling adventure of danger and death which climaxes in a series of fast-moving surprises. Peter Mortain, one of the youngest directors in this very young medium, was beleaguered enough, directing the first episode of the most expensive variety show ever produced. He had a cast whose first appearance on television made them skittish, a thousand technical details to handle, and a star who was also his boss!

The blonde soprano was smooth, sultry. She was also mysteriously hired at the last minute and was taking the best songs and skits away from the other cast members and claiming them as her own ... and the producer refused to stop her. From the first moment she joined the Tod Arundel Show, at least one member of the cast suspected her presence meant big-time trouble. That suspicion became a certainty when a corpse called on the young director.

Peter directed the next rehearsal of his coast-to-coast television revue, knowing that somehow the glamorous soprano had picked up some nasty acquaintances. He worried that his back was the target for the next knife. Peter found out too fast why the sensational blonde was hired, and why their boss was paying her particular attention ... and why she took a certain non-professional interest in Peter ... for a price that added up to his own life. Unwittingly, he had become the key man in a nightmare intrigue.

Murder and the Key Man shows one of the master storytellers of all time at his exciting best, populated with Kelland’s vivid, memorable characters, with the signature brilliant, strong-minded heroine, eccentric romance, and showstopper of a grandmother, who solves most of the case herself.
