Auguste Comte and Positivism by John Stuart Mill

sociology.
In this work, Mill examines Comte’s ideas with both respect and criticism. He explores the central claim of positivism: that reliable knowledge should be based on observation, experience, and scientific reasoning rather than speculation about unknowable causes.
A major part of the book is devoted to Comte’s Law of Three Stages, which proposes that human thought develops through theological, metaphysical, and finally positive stages. Mill also discusses Comte’s attempt to organize the sciences into a unified system and his belief that society itself could be studied scientifically.
But Mill does not simply praise Comte. He also questions the more authoritarian aspects of Comte’s later philosophy, especially his ideas about social organization, intellectual authority, and the “Religion of Humanity.”
This makes the book more than a summary of positivism. It is also a debate between two important nineteenth-century thinkers about science, freedom, society, progress, and the limits of philosophical systems.
This audiobook is ideal for listeners interested in philosophy, sociology, intellectual history, positivism, social theory, and nineteenth-century thought.
Auguste Comte and Positivism remains a valuable introduction to one of the major philosophical movements of the modern age, seen through the analytical mind of John Stuart Mill.
