The Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, Richard Marles, is holding strategic talks in Washington, as the Pentagon reviews the multi-billion-dollar AUKUS defence agreement.
In the meantime, former top Pentagon official Abraham Denmark has urged Australia to give the United States more concrete commitments about how it would use American-built nuclear submarines.
Mr Denmark has co-written a report for the Washington think-tank, Centre for Strategic and International Studies, proposing a significant overhaul of the trilateral security partnership.
