On August 21, 2015, Dani left New Zealand for her honeymoon in the U.S. On August 24, 2015 her husband, Matt, was admitted to the hospital (they thought he had the flu). On August 26, 2015 he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
On August 28, 2015 he collapsed in her arms, his vitals plummeted, and they were rushed to ICU.
On September 11, 2015 they arrived by life flight to UCSD - a major cancer center in San Diego.
On November 11, 2015 Matt received a life saving bone marrow transplant.
For the next year they lived in hospitals, outpatient housing, and isolation while Matt continued to fight for his life.
They lost everything - their house in New Zealand, their cars, jobs, savings, and all their belongings except the clothes they packed for their three week honeymoon.
The odds were stacked against them - the statistics were grim, but her husband kept saying that the odds were for other people. He was 1 of 1 and those statistics didn't apply to him.
Today, Matt is cancer free and they have a son after being told they'd never have kids.
Dani said, "When you've lost everything and you have nothing further to lose - you take risks." That is exactly what they did to rebuild their lives.
