  • Books, Kids & Creations Interview with Authors Ali Kamanda & Jorge Redmond
Best friends Jorge and Ali have always connected over a shared passion: raising their Black sons with pride and self-love. As a district attorney fighting the “pipeline to prison,” Jorge wanted a way to help show Black boys their worth in society. Meanwhile, as the owner of a nonprofit that helps startups in West Africa, Ali wanted to teach Black youth that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
So, they wrote a picture book!
Black Boy, Black Boy is a brand-new picture book that was just published in August of 2022 by Sourcebooks. It’s an inspiring and powerful anthem of Black joy and an ode to remarkable moments in Black History.
From athlete and activist Colin Kaepernick to musician Sam Cooke, inventor Elijah McCoy and writer Chinua Achebe, there are so many inspirational men in Black history. This lyrical, rhythmic text encourages boys to imagine everything they can be and the great things they can do, drawing on the strength of people throughout history that paved the way for Black boys today.
Black Boy, Black Boy tells today's boys: you have the courage, you are the light. It's a new day! Be inspired and motivated by drawing on the history of the role models that came before you.
    About the Authors:
ALI BIKO SULAIMAN KAMANDA is an award-winning filmmaker from Sierra Leone, West Africa. He is the President of Salone Rising, a not-for-profit organization that provides micro-financing and mentoring resources to small business owners in rural Sierra Leone.
JORGE REDMOND works in the Buncombe County District Attorney's office as an Assistant District Attorney, and as an adjunct professor in South College's Legal Department.
KEN DALEY is an award-winning artist/illustrator from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. Ken's passion lies with stories that reflect his heritage as the child of immigrants, his connection to the Caribbean, and the richness and expanse of the African diaspora. He believes that diverse stories are essential to creating a more just and equitable world and this is something he is deeply committed to manifesting through his art.

Episode 54: Fearless Journalist Julie Blacklow on The Storytellers
Julie Blacklow is an Emmy award-winning journalist with more than 40 years in the television news business. Among the first generation of women in TV news in the United States, she encountered the entire spectrum of humanity from movie stars to murderers and everyday folks overcoming amazing challenges. Born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, Blacklow migrated to Seattle in her early 20's, married to a man who wanted to escape his Jewish mother. Hers is a life writ large, a roller-coaster ride with a remarkable number of wonderful highs and terrifying lows. At the age of 60, she gradually left television and began managing a horse ranch, a dramatic change of careers where she learned animals are often far more sane than humans. She's owned 5 dogs, 4 cats, one horse, and a wonderful son, Jeremy. Her friends describe her as tenacious, decisive, bossy, opinionated, loving, loyal, and brave. Now 75 years old, she has started painting again...something she hadn't done in 50 years, started a podcast, published her first book, "Fearless: Diary of a Badass Reporter," and is starting to write her second book which she describes as a 'non-fiction novel.'

  • Books, Kids & Creations Interview with Lori Garver, Former NASA Deputy Administrator
Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age
The Authors on the Air Global Radio Network presents, Books, Kids & Creations with Tracy Blom a podcast that features people who inspire and uplift future generations with their work.
In this episode we sit down with Lori Garver, Former NASA Deputy Administrator, to discuss her experience with NASA, serving under multiple presidents, persevering even when it seems like everyone is against you, and of course, her new book, Escaping Gravity: My Quest to Transform NASA and Launch a New Space Age.
    About the Author:
Lori Garver was the principal advisor on aerospace issues to three presidential candidates and led the NASA transition team for President Obama. She served as the Deputy Administrator of the Space Agency from 2009 to 2013 and is known as an architect of the new era of commercial partnerships that allow SpaceX to carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station.
Garver is the founder of the Brooke Owens Fellowship, an internship and mentorship program for collegiate women interested in pursuing space careers. She is the recipient of the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award for Women in Aerospace and has been awarded three NASA Distinguished Service Medals. She lives in Washington, DC.
    About the Book:
“Former NASA official Lori Garver offers a front-row seat to the decades-long struggles within and among space bureaucrats and space billionaires. Bring popcorn, as you bear witness to an untold slice of space history.” —Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist and author of Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier
Escaping Gravity is former NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver's firsthand account of how a handful of revolutionaries overcame the political patronage and bureaucracy that threatened the space agency. The success of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, and countless other commercial space efforts were preceded by decades of work by a group of people Garver calls “space pirates.” Their quest to transform NASA put Garver in the crosshairs of Congress, the aerospace industry, and hero-astronauts trying to protect their own profits and mythology within a system that had held power since the 1950s.
