    Meryl chats with Rabbi Sandy Sasso about her mission of engaging the religious imagination of children through her books, and her career as one of the first women to become a rabbi in America.
    Rabbi Sasso was the first woman ordained from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 1974 and the first to serve a Conservative congregation together with her husband, Rabbi Dennis C. Sasso. They were the first practicing rabbinical couple in world Jewish history. Following 36 years of service to Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, Indianapolis, Indiana, she is now its Senior Rabbi Emerita. She is an internationally known award-winning children’s author who has published twenty-five children’s books and two adult books. Active in the arts, civic and interfaith communities, she has written on midrash, women, and spirituality.

    After holding corporate marketing positions for over 30 years, Jean Derespina fulfilled a dream in 2014 and founded The Marketing Gig LLC. An avid writer, her business focus is on digital content. Jean provides blogs, email campaigns, flyers & brochures, white papers, case studies, newsletters, and web copy for her clients. In January 2015, Jean’s life was changed when she was a victim in a serious accident. Unwilling to succumb to her injuries, Jean worked hard during her lengthy recovery. Her passion for writing helped her keep a positive attitude. In 2021, Jean fulfilled yet another dream. She published her first children’s picture book, The Famous Phoebe of Long Island: Phoebe’s Adventures at Sailors Haven.

    Aliya Ali-Afzal has a degree in Russian and German from University College London, and is studying for an MA in Creative Writing at Royal Holloway, University of London. She is an Alum of the Curtis Brown Creative Novel Writing course.
    Aliya worked as a City head-hunter, before retraining as an MBA career coach. She has always lived in London, since moving there from Pakistan as a young child, but has also spent time in Russia (both pre- and post-Perestroika), Germany, Amsterdam, and Cairo.
    Her debut novel, WOULD I LIE TO YOU? is about Faiza, who has secretly spent her family’s emergency savings fund. When her husband Tom loses his job, she must do everything she can to keep him from uncovering her secret. As she becomes ever more desperate, she starts to realise that she’s not the only one whose perfect life hides something much darker. WOULD I LIE TO YOU? was longlisted for The Bath Novel Award and The Mslexia Novel award. It was published in July 2021 by Head of Zeus (UK) and Grand Central (US).
    Her work in progress, THE FUNERAL BOOK, was longlisted for The Mo Prize Hachette UK, and is about 24-year-old Zara, who is planning a wedding at the same time as her beloved 90-year-old granny is planning her funeral.

    Seána Walsh lives in a little house called Dandelion Burrow in the wilds of Western Massachusetts. She’s worked as an elementary school teacher for the last twenty years and runs a program teaching children to write and produce their own musicals.
