  • Jonathan Haupt And Laura Trentham LIVE from the Pat Conroy Literary Center
The Pat Conroy Literary Center presents executive director Jonathan Haupt IN CONVERSATION with best-selling author Laura Trentham.
This from Laura: I was born and raised in a small town in Northwest Tennessee. Although, I loved English and reading in high school, I was convinced an English degree equated to starvation! So, I chose the next most logical major - Chemical Engineering- and worked in a hard hat and steel toed boots for several years. Now I live in South Carolina with my husband and two children. In between school and homework and soccer practices, I love to get lost in another world, whether it's Regency England or small town Alabama. My first two Falcon Football books received TOP PICKS from RT Book Reviews and a STARRED review from Library Journal. KISS ME THAT WAY, won the Stiletto Contest and was a finalist for the National Readers Choice Award. THEN HE KISSED ME, was named an Amazon Best Romance of 2016. TILL I KISSED YOU Book 3, is a finalist for the Maggie Award. And, LEAVE THE NIGHT ON Book 4, was named an iBooks Best Book of August and was featured on NPR! WHEN THE STARS COME OUT was named a Best Romance of February by Amazon!
About Jonathan: Jonathan Haupt is the executive director of the nonprofit Conroy Center and the former director of the University of South Carolina Press, where he created the Story River Books fiction imprint with Pat Conroy.

  • John Russell and Charlotte Readers Podcast
John Russell “All the Right Circles”
In today’s episode, we meet John Russell, author of “All the Right Circles,” a book set in the 1990s in Raleigh, North Carolina, with action in Charlotte, too, that explores themes of race, class, and money in a changing world of relations between men and women, society, business and politics across three generations.
Diana Spechler, novelist and New York Times columnist says: “All the Right Circles is reminiscent of an Updike novel, had Updike been southern — it reads like the best gossip, the kind relayed in hushed voices at the fanciest cocktail parties in North Carolina. It’s a compulsively readable, gorgeously written exploration of intimacy and of power.”
We start the show with John reading from the opening pages of the book, where we learn about the significance of the highway that makes a circle out of protagonist Jack Callahan’s home town of Raleigh, North Carolina.

She finds humor in some of the bumps life amply provides, so that even poems dealing with difficult moments and tough issues leave the reader feeling uplifted.”
Patricia Hooper, author of “Wild Persistence” calls the book “a treasure” and Joseph Bathanti, North Carolina Poet Laureate and author of “The 13th Sunday after Pentecost” says that “In the Sunroom with Raymond Carver,” underscores Dannye Romine Powell’s “abiding reputation as a poet of breathtaking candor and precision, the consummate craftswoman, who painstakingly parses syllables into words as if sifting for gold.”
Dannye starts the show with a reading of the title piece in the book, “In the Sunroom with Raymond Carver.”
