Parenting a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be challenging, frustrating, and stressful for all involved. Autism in children often leads to disagreements about the best treatments, the validity of a diagnosis, and how much time and money to devote to the child.
For some couples, the process of addressing and resolving these issues leads to a stronger bond. For others, however, the stress can take a real toll on the relationship. In fact, research shows that parenting a child with autism is associated with increased marital conflicts.

Many parents feel overwhelmed with sadness when their child is diagnosed with autism. Often, that grief is connected with a sense of loss. While their child, of course, is still a part of their lives, some parents feel that they have lost the child they expected or the child they thought they had. Others are saddened by the realization that their child with autism will almost certainly live their entire lives with a disability. Still, others are grieved by the thought they will not be able to give their spouse or parents the gift of a "perfect" child or grandchild.

There are up to 134,000 children with “special needs” awaiting permanent homes, according to the National Adoption Center, and the demand is growing. In the context of foster care and child welfare, “special needs” refers not only to a child who has disabilities, but to children whose risk factors for disability, age, racial or ethnic background, or other characteristics often make them more difficult to place.
