Pride, criticism, and opposition will challenge the person given to fulfilling the will of God. There will be resistance and arguments, and they will seem—and may actually be—unfair. Difficulties will come to the believer in the form of insolence and perhaps from unexpected sources. When it happens, for surely it will, this passage instructs us how to respond in a way that will cause us to grow, honor God, and in the end, possibly invite the attacker to change their heart.

 By participating in Holy Communion, we remember the empty, shallow, fruit less vanity of our once self-focused lives. We remember the helplessness we felt when attempting to redeem ourselves from the result of our sin. We remember the moment of our own salvation, a moment that transformed a familiar story in history into a personal, experiential encounter with the living God. We remember when our prison bars were destroyed, allowing us to escape into the genuine freedom of a life with Christ.

 Jesus told us to allow him to provide for whatever circumstance might occur, to seek his kingdom first, and not to worry. However, in our humanity, we are often deceived by the evil one, and like the psalmist in the preceding verses, we sense we are slipping. Then our great God of mercy, like the arrival of rain in a drought, renews hope within us when doubt had nearly conquered us. The faithful love of the Lord introduces his spirit of comfort, ensuring that we are never alone—even in our doubts.

 Human history is filled with stories of selfishness—self-preservation, self- centeredness, self-exaltation. Jesus reveals the eventual destruction that comes when we make self-seeking our goal and purpose. He exposes that chasing fame and fortune eventually lead to feelings of emptiness, purposelessness, and hopelessness. There is no greater tragedy than gaining the whole world while losing the soul (Mark 8:36).
