The film tells the true story of Amin Nawabi a pseudonym for an Afghan refugee who recounts his childhood escape from Afghanistan his journey through Russia and Europe and his eventual resettlement in Denmark. Told entirely through animation to protect his identity the film explores displacement trauma memory family survival and identity including Amin’s experience coming to terms with being a gay Afghan man. Flee made history with three Academy Award nominations Best Documentary Feature Best International Feature Film and Best Animated Feature.
