How much are we concerned about beggars, children hawking on street. It's saddening when people see beggars as people who can be given alms in exchange for their destiny.

How much are we concerned about street children? The rate has increased to 18.5millionare according to UNICEF.

Some of us are majorly concerned about giving them 20 Naira, or 50 Naira, as much as can afford at present.

For how long will that save them?

Yes, some beggars are millionaires in the business. You can say that, but is it all of them?

Ain't we worried about the future of these street kids?

Some children hawk whilst their mates are in the classroom learning.

Some drop out of school as a result of poverty and turned into street kids.

HSKI has been doing a great job in reshaping the future of these street kids.

It would be a blessing if we can have more hands on deck to help the street kids, not just to feed them but to secure their future and eradicate having children on the streets.

It'll amaze you to know that the beggars (AlMajiri) have a king in their turf, whose order is the final.

It draws one's jaw to hear about the 33years old woman (beggar) that has given birth to 15kids!

Whenever we are told, we are malaria positive or diagnosed with fever or any kind of disease, first thing is to say " Olohun Onije, orimo ko" (God Forbid, over my dead body) 😂

When health practitioners observed or diagnosed and give out their results, some would not return to such clinic or hospital, then started praying and paying traditionalists.

Same in the scenario,

When the new mother noticed something in the neonate, such as yellowness of the eyes instead of going to the hospital to confirm and get treatment at an early stage, the grandma could say "the baby will be fine, you can't know more than me, I nurtured your husband or father... Blabla.

More reason we have to pay attention to our health issues before and after marriage.

Genotype, blood group and rhesus factor should be thoroughly checked for compatibility.

Yesterday, we discussed Neonatal Jaundice, which is a disease that affects neonates and could lead to brain damage. It's about the yellowness of the eyes that's ignored by people and it destroys the baby's brain so the child develops long-term complications like mental retardation, paralysis, etc and such child later turns to be abandoned without adequate care.

Some of them, become special needs children and, sadly, there are no adequate facilities to take care of them in our society today.

It was said that, if an incompatible blood group should have a baby, this disease could affect the child.

Same as Rhesus status.

It's said to be prevented right from the pregnancy stage and immediately after birth when confirmed to be what's affecting the child.

As a society, what's our role here,

Firstly, ensure pregnant women around you go for antenatal as expected in a standard hospital.

Secondly, when anything seems to be wrong with a child, let's encourage the parents to visit the hospital without delay.

Thirdly, before getting married, advise singles and new couples to check their blood group and rhesus factor. If not compatible, medical practitioners would ensure the baby and mother are fine by giving the best treatment and guidance.

From research carried out here in Ilorin, 70% of parents are guilty of child favoritism.

Now, what if we do that across all states and see the statistics of affected homes.

Child favoritism could be intentional and unintentional as gotten from research.

Many unstable adults out there, would turn out to be aggressive people because they lack parental love, and in one way or the other were victims of child favoritism.

Loving a child is natural, but make it loving your children! Including the adopted child(ren) in your care.

It was said that parents can have a favorite from the children but shouldn't be placed on the forehead.

It will not only affect the favorite child, it'll affect the whole family, the society and the final result will bounce back on the parents.

Child favoritism has no positive impact but rather builds hatred, enmity, jealousy, and the gap between the parent and family.

Some parents tend to have the first born as their favorite child, while some choose their favorite due to how smart and intellectually blessed the child is, which should never be.

When a parent punishes a child now and the favorite child did the same thing, such would be overlooked! Why?

This alone affects the self-esteem of a child!

The favourite child mostly turns out to be a spoilt brat! And misbehave in society because they see themselves as the champion over other children in the family.

Only those who knew that their lives are at stake and did some self-reflection will break this bond and make other children in the family not have him/her as an enemy.

As a parent, what's the way out?

As a society, what are we doing to curb this?

Parenting starts when you decide to choose your spouse, became one, get pregnant and expect the baby.

It's seen as child abuse when children who are supposed to be in school are served responsibilities of hawking to feed the family, as this could lead to rape cases and even the male child can start having bad gangs, smoking, drinking and keeping bad company.

As a parent, you failed if you are not able to provide the three basic needs; Food, shelter and cloth, for your child(ren).

And it should be known that part of your responsibilities is to give security and education.

Both formal and informal.

Parents should stop pushing all the responsibilities of their parenthood to teachers!

Parents are the first teacher,

They are life models.

Parenting, child upbringing.

A child testified that he would have turned out to be a miscreant/thug, if not for the beating and punishment he got from his parents.

Another child developed a hatred for her mother as a result of memories of the beating she had from her.

Today on the program Àwùjọ wa (Our Society), we discussed Disciplinary Measures in child upbringing: should beating be condoned?

As both guests were not on the same page, it was an engaging moment with them.

I believe in beating,

I don't believe in beating, as both guests give their lines and did justice to the topic.

Extensively we discussed if beating instills morals, corrects a child or

instill fear in a child and should it be condoned as disciplinary measures.

Likewise, the psychological effect of beating on a child.

It saddens that some parents reign curses on their children whenever they offend them and engage in throwing tantrums, beating a child with sharp or harmful objects, we urge parents to put a halt to this, as their children are their future.
