Not only have we been recently reminded to consider our safety while jogging through our own neighborhoods, but now the Monica and Dameon Shepard incident in early May inspires us to consider how to remain safe when a mob of vigilante terrorists is literally at the front door of our home.

In the discussions I have witnessed on social media and the news about the Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor murders, I feel not enough attention is given to the historical context and legacy of violence done to Black bodies in the United States.  Drawing parallels between these contemporary murders and the similar killings Ida Bell Well-Barnett witnessed in 1892 that sparked her to begin the Anti-lynching Movement, I explain my most prominent concerns regarding the safety of Black people today.

Information is everything.  It informs the decisions we make and often times it serves as the lens through which we understand politics and current events.  What if the information you relied on for understanding was tainted, incomplete or both?
