NOTES:
Masters of Business podcast inspiration –
On a plane watching finance news, interview of reclusive Hedge Fund Manager.
Who are your mentors? Philosophy? What books are you reading? Advice to graduates? What do you wish you knew 30 years ago?
Three key things
Process – ability to distinguish between skill and luck. Like in sports at high levels in investment industry – differences are minimal.
ARK Cathy Wood in 2020.
Behavior – how to manage and stay calm, control limbic system, work through bad market.
Humility – acknowledge serendipity and luck in life, could have worked differently.
Gates not the first to be offered IBM deal. Other tech entrepreneurs visited Xerox Parq
Jobs master of design, even on back of machine where no one looks.
Inflation Hawks screaming for 15 years, finally right
Three signs of Recession – good indicators:
FRED – St. Louis Fed monitors indicator (get ink)
Six months is forever in economy, recession looks unlikely. 2023 – all bets off.
Never know what disruption can occur, like Russia invading Ukraine.
Outlook for the Knicks to make the Playoffs?
Knicks will be good when they get new ownership who invests in the product. Need good quantitative analysis like how they acquired players in the heyday of the 1990s. Look at the turnaround of the NY Mets with Steve Cohen buying the team recently.

Crossing the Chasm & Tech Adoption w/ Geoffrey Moore
- BRT S03 EP28 (127) 6-26-2022
Things We Learned This Week
Guest: Geoffrey Moore
http://www.geoffreyamoore.com/
https://www.linkedin.com/in/geoffreyamoore/
https://twitter.com/geoffreyamoore
Bio:
Managing Director, Geoffrey Moore Consulting Venture Partner, Wildcat Venture Partners Chairman Emeritus, TCG Advisors, Chasm Institute and The Chasm Group Member of the Board of Directors of several pre-IPO Companies
Books – Crossing the Chasm, Zone to Win, Inside the Tornado, The Infinite Staircase, Escape Velocity & more… Geoffrey Moore is an author, speaker, and advisor who splits his consulting time between start-up companies in the Wildcat Venture Partners portfolios and established high-tech enterprises, most recently including Salesforce, Microsoft, Autodesk, F5Networks, Gainsight, Google, and Splunk.
Moore’s life’s work has focused on the market dynamics surrounding disruptive innovations. His first book, Crossing the Chasm, focuses on the challenges start-up companies face transitioning from early adopting to mainstream customers. It has sold more than a million copies, and its third edition has been revised such that the majority of its examples and case studies reference companies come to prominence from the past decade. Moore’s most recent work is the, The Infinite Staircase, a bold new book, high-tech’s best-known strategist makes a seminal contribution to the search for meaning in a secular era. Two questions fundamental to human existence have always been the metaphysical “where do I fit in the grand scheme of things?” and the ethical “how should I behave?” Religion is no longer a source of answers for many people, and nothing has replaced it.
Irish by heritage, Moore has yet to meet a microphone he didn’t like and gives between 50 and 80 speeches a year. One theme that has received a lot of attention recently is the transition in enterprise IT investment focus from Systems of Record to Systems of Engagement. This is driving the deployment of a new cloud infrastructure to complement the legacy client-server stack, creating massive markets for a next generation of tech industry leaders.
Moore has a bachelors in American literature from Stanford University and a PhD in English literature from the University of Washington. After teaching English for four years at Olivet College, he came back to the Bay Area with his wife and family and began a career in high tech as a training specialist. Over time he transitioned first into sales and then into marketing, finally finding his niche in marketing consulting, working first at Regis McKenna Inc, then with the three firms he helped found: The Chasm Group, Chasm Institute, and TCG Advisors. Today he is chairman emeritus of all three.
Notes:
Crossing the Chasm book
Crossing the Chasm, Take Two: Growing to Scale in B2B2C Markets
Crossing the Chasm (1990) has become part of the lexicon for Tech Industry knowledge, mass influence on Tech CEOs last 25 years, constant references
5 Stages of Adoption – Innovators, Early Adopters, Early Market Pragmatists, Late Majority, Laggards
Disruptive Innovation – is created & early adopters put the tech on the market
Chasm – early market vs. mainstream market.
Win tech ‘primaries’, win some ‘beachheads’ and create whole niche market – get mainstream market to create momentum to the point everyone wants the product – FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)
i.e. – EV niche, the mainstream streaming video
Tornado phase – run like hell to keep up with demand.
1999 – Salesforce – enterprise software in cloud, SAAS mass adoption by 2010
Mid market could not afford Oracle Cloud early on, with SAAS everyone can afford.
Legacy Co’s fail to make tech turn, because they lose money in short term shifting to new disruptive tech away from mature industry that brings in bulk of profits $
All companies are Tech companies now, and everyone needs to read Geoffrey Moore’s work.
Zone To Win book about Mature Industries invest in new tech – form new second operating model for new tech model within a mature company, meanwhile old model continues asa separate division selling current long term product
Go out of business if do not make tech transition, disrupted so much by new tech, as old tech becomes obsolete (think VCRs)
Apple, under Steve Jobs, did great R&D. Had first Mover Advantage disruptive technologies. Rare to be disruptive company – most are disrupters.
Good enough, fast enough – get in the game, catch up and convince clients you’re part of future.
Talent costs money, startups attract talent. Very hard for legacy companies to attract talent because talent wants to work on new tech.
Nokia lost way with disruptive smart phone. Blackberry, Blockbuster disappeared quick because of disruptive tech. Blackberry had Keypad – was disruptive tech and blown out also by smart phone spin off of new R&D tech.
Kodak had digital film, invented it but could not move off of print film (legacy biz) and lost market share. Amazon has constantly disrupted itself and evolved.
Fuji could not move off print film, but saved by coloring techniques.
Infinite Staircase – book, passion project of Geoffrey
Philosophical book – complexity and emergence stitch all the science stories of Big Bang Creation of the Universe to BRT podcast in 2022 and Moral Questions of life, Where do traditional values come from now? Let’s hope AI does not take over
Flashback to: Seg. 2 of 3/6/2022
MB on Disruption in Business & The Innovator's Dilemma book by Clayton Christensen
Clayton Christensen’s book, “The Innovator’s Dilemma”
Tech Disruption – technology changes and a small company startup can up-end big tech companies. Hence, disruption - the power of disruption, why market leaders are often set up to fail as technologies and industries change and what incumbents can do to secure their market leadership for a long time.
Innovator’s Dilemma – how can big companies stay up with tech changes and pivot without hurting core business? All businesses (including tech companies) have trouble with disruption.
Example: Blockbuster – rented movies, DVDs, lost market share to Red Box (vending movie rental), then both disrupted by streaming movies.
Music industry went from records to cassettes to CDs to streaming (Napster).
MySpace taken out by Facebook in social networks.
Yahoo search taken out by Google (controls 75% of the search market)
Kodak afraid to get out of film business and passed on digital film, lost market share.
To solve the Innovator’s Dilemma, big companies acquire smaller tech companies; have in house R&D to be ready for next tech wave.
Steve Jobs of Apple was very influenced by Innovator’s Dilemma and took this idea seriously.
If you do not try to put your company out of business (w/ disruption / new tech), someone else will.
Jobs was not afraid to innovate, and cannibalize his own company and products to stay relevant.
Apple created iPhone, and now computer is in your pocket
Peter Thiel – “Zero to One” book - Great innovation is not A to B to C, it is vertical, jumps curves.
Current smart phones have more computing power than a computer 20 years ago.
Guy Kawasaaki (former Apple) Talk - “12 Lessons From Steve Jobs”

Buying & Revitalizing Business in America w/ Jason Azevedo
- BRT S03 EP27 (126) 6-19-2022
Things We Learned This Week
Guest: Jason Azevedo, Chief Strategy Officer at the Manufacturing Revitalization Corporation of America (MRCA)
https://www.linkedin.com/in/jason-azevedo/
https://mrca.net/
Jason created his first manufacturing company with just $600 when he was only 15 years old. At this young age he was able to establish business with some of the greatest companies in the world such as Starbucks, Nike, Disney, Marvel, Volkswagen, Audi, Lucas films, dodgers, NBA teams. By the time he was 20 he was already making millions in revenue.
Jason is one of the most dynamic people you will meet. He owns and operates the last standing MADE IN AMERICA factories (IN CALIFORNIA NO LESS!) and has hatched a plan to give back the factories and some of his wealth to the American workers.
In 2009, Jason co-founded Mosaic, taking on the role of CEO — his talents are far beyond running the company, with duties touching conceptual development, engineering, and deployment. Since 2009, Jason’s been at the helm of growing the company year-over-year, acquiring several entities, and creating several others to round out manufacturing efforts. His emphasis on Made In America is a driving force for how the various companies he’s co-founded operate. He also assists with business development and client strategy and is an integral part of how we operate.
Majoring in Entrepreneurial Business, with a minor in Marketing from San Jose State University, Jason has had his heart in business development since an early age, starting a very successful apparel company that grew from humble garage beginnings to annual gross billings of over a million dollars.
Personal interests range from riding dirt bikes, to beach volleyball, to whiskey tasting. International travel weaves its way in there, too!

Things We Learned This Week
Co-Host: Denver Nowicz, President - Wealth For Life

Denver is an advisor with nearly 20 years experience working with clients in investments and insurance, designing retirement plans with a combo of both. He takes us through different strategies for clients to get the best allocations for their money over the long term. It is the Combo Strategy of both Offense and Defense, the synergy of the mix, not ‘All or Nothing’.
Notes:
Assets: Appreciating vs. Harvesting
There are many different Assets you can invest in. Common asset classes are Stocks, Bonds, Gold & Real Estate. There are Alternative assets like Crypto, Art, Private Equity, etc.
The classic idea is you buy an asset as an investment with the idea it will appreciate over time so it is worth more when you sell it. Buy low, sell high. It also may act as a hedge vs inflation. Instead of having your money sit in cash, and lose money to inflation, you purchase an asset that goes up in value more than inflation. What is rarely discussed is the concept of Appreciating Assets vs. Harvesting Assets. What's the difference? Appreciating Assets are the assets mentioned above, where the plan is to buy low, wait for the appreciation, then sell high. You do not capture the gains until you sell. You gain value on paper, but if you wait too long to sell, you could miss the appreciation. Likewise if they lose value but you do not sell, then only a paper loss. Stocks are a classic example. 'If I just sold last month, I would have made 25%, instead of 15%.' You have to time it right. Other examples are Gold, Art, most Crypto, certain types of Real Estate (Land for example with nothing build on it yet). These assets are only valuable when they appreciate, and if you sell at the right time. Harvesting Assets are assets that get interest, or give off profits, or cash flow. You are able to capture some of the gains from the asset. Examples are:
*** Asset value can go up or down in the holding period In fact many of the above Harvesting examples can all be both Appreciating and Harvesting Assets: Rental Real Estate, Bonds, Dividend Stocks, REITs, Cash Flowing Business, Index life Insurance, etc.
Note: Options are not an asset, they are a contract that with a decaying value over its term, and can go down quickly; time decay lessens the option contract the longer you hold it, until it expires at the expiration date worthless. This is why Options are often referred to as trading (short term) vs investing (long term). When investing in Assets, it is recommended you buy Harvesting Assets to get the best of all worlds. In case the value of the Asset goes down, at least you receive some cash while holding the Asset.
Cash – classic asset that loses value over time, can’t buy the same amount today for a dollar that you could 10 or 15 years ago
Fed Policy – print money, devalues currency, creates inflation
Inflation – eats away at value of cash, assets like stocks, gold, real estate can all act as a hedge vs inflation
Create assets – digital assets, build an online business
Past – people had pensions, savings, & social security to rely on, today have to create your own retirement plan
Buy & Hold – appreciating asset, when to sell, avoid whipsaw of market (up & down movement)
Harvesting – cash flow, take profits off table and re-deploy money
Asset pricing and timing
Hard Assets - Real Estate
Cash Flowing (CF) Business with recurring revenue is an excellent harvesting asset that gives you multiple options to grow wealth long term
With good assets, can use leverage to grow wealth and acquire more assets.
Assets – appreciate, options, harvest / cash flow
Leverage – scale wealth using other people’s money, finance your retirement and go bigger and quicker
Tax Protection – defense strategy, put money in long term tax free position
Index Strategies with IUL
Top 10% strategies – if you earn more than $140K, than top 10% earner and most financial advice does not apply anymore
Wealth gets more wealth – save and invest more money using leverage can grow massively thru compound interest
“One Thing” Retirement Plan – 401K, and stocks (+ W2 income), hope it goes up and no volatility (market risk). 90% of people are on this plan – Need to get away from this plan and diversify your retirement plan
Retirement Rule or 4% Withdrawal Rule – is outdated, and often will fund one’s lifestyle in retirement
More efficient use of money
Assets can act as an inflation hedge, as they increase in value when Inflation rises.
Income Streams – Good use of Harvesting type assets leads to multiple income streams
Loan Collateral – borrow against assets, or use as collateral to get a loan or another asset
Credit Line – borrow from assets (ie – bank credit line, real estate credit line)
Refinance – cash out refinance of real estate leads to tax free money returned
Net Worth – personal financial statement, fill out yearly and list asset values
Markets are inefficient, and often irrational. Humans are emotional and tend to panic when they see scary headline on CNBC. People sell on fear of a recession, disregarding the fact that many of these big companies will not go out of business.
Trading in the Markets have changed with all the super computers and algorithms involved in daily stock trading. Computers can create huge sell offs in the market, because of the programs and indicators they operate off of - artificial intelligence.
Financial Advice should be more holistic. Too much advice is based on buying stocks, vs growing your overall net worth. To grow wealth, one must have cash flowing assets. You want to put yourself in a solid financial position owning different assets (like real estate, stocks, etc.) so you can handle economic downturns.
The stock market value is all on paper until you sell, so it is inefficient on capturing gains. The wealthy may only have 20 - 30% of their money in the stocks. It is hard to be consistent and disciplined in your investing. You need ways to generate cash, and lock in gains.
It is important to understand Market Cycles, and how they work, plus how long they will last. Howard Marks writes often on this topic, in his memos or the book he wrote on the topic (here is a summary). If you can recognize these cycles, it helps in investment planning.
Tiger 21 Club - Follow this super investor group for ideas, and how they diversify their investments. Allocation usually has 25% in real estate, 25% in stocks, 25% in private equity, 10% in cash, and the rest is Bonds or other investments.

Beware Taxes! Defense is What You Need vs Offense in Your Investment Gameplan
- BRT S03 EP24 (123) 6-10-2022 – Wealth for Life

He takes us through different strategies for clients to get the best allocations for their money over the long term. It is the Combo Strategy of both Offense and Defense, the synergy of the mix, not ‘All or Nothing’.
Notes:
Synergy of Offense / Defense – diversification of income streams, lessen market risk
Offense – stocks, crypto, real estate
Defense - IUL, Cash Flowing Business, Real estate, bonds, dividend stocks
Offense – tactical – hold 15-20 stocks – aka ‘best houses on the block’
Tactical Investment Strategy – goal of growth, shift with market sentiment, value to growth or growth to cyclical – active management. 15% beat market, 85% do not.
Secular trends – housing, building or energy
Index – safe but will not out perform market, just bought off shelf.
Index has Market risk and Zombie Co. problem.
Cash = bad, gets eaten up by inflation = Inflation risk
Stock market – good at growth, but inefficient on income, hard to capture the gains
“One Thing” Retirement Plan – 401K and stocks, hope it goes up and no volatility (market risk). 90% of people are on this plan.
Build Assets – or create assets, like a digital brand
Never go back to Vegas with scared money. Lose $, then chasing losses
Combine offensive and defensive strategies
Defense – wins championships, stable. Finances are stable, allows you to take risks IUL, CF business. During bad market, wait for stocks to rebound and pull money from IUL or business.
Visual – what is needed income or expenses – cover basics, then invest other money. Defense = 40%
More wealth created, less money in market – money from business or real estate, move money to index strategies. Use financial leverage to increase wealth.
Average worker – salary and money in market (401 K). All money is offensive strategy and subject to disruption and market risk.
Defense – Tax Protection and Tax Buckets 3 taxed, tax free, tax deferred
Tax brackets – progressive tax system. Tax income in tiered system
Taxes highest expenses, eats away at wealth - IRS – puts target on wealthy people
Takes time to move people to tax free position.
Government/IRS is your silent partner –they will get their cut
Taxes – permanent loss of 25-50% every year
401 K / Tax Deferred – pay taxes later and do not know rate
Tax brackets – max out tax position and use 401 K
Segment defense money out – Secure future income with 20% of capitol. Frees up capitol for offensive strategy
Capital Control – no losses, principal protection, Lock in Gains .
Wealthy has less money in 401 K retirement income or home equity. Instead own assets – business or real-estate that have tax shielding qualities or private foundation
Leverage OPM – wealthy use other people’s money to invest, eran ROI on bigger sum of money, then take $ via loans, does not count as income on taxes
Business owner – advantages with LLCs, Trusts, Insurance and expense write offs

**Start day with a few hours of ‘focus time’

The Bigger They Are (1983)Link: HERE
In 1983, University of British Columbia physicist Lorne Whitehead noted “a simple and dramatic demonstration of exponential growth, as in a nuclear chain reaction.” He determined that one domino can knock down another that’s about half again as large in all dimensions; since the gravitational potential energy of an upright domino is proportional to the fourth power of its size, this means that one tiny domino can set off a graduated chain reaction with impressively thunderous results.
Whitehead’s first domino was less than 10 mm high; he nudged it with a piece of cotton. The resulting chain reaction brought down a 13th domino that was 64 times as tall; an investment of 0.024 microjoules at one end had released 51 joules of energy at the other, an amplification factor of about 2 billion.
Of course, it’s possible to construct impressive chains of graduated dominoes even if they grow less dramatically than this one. Here’s a world record set in the Netherlands in 2009:

Archimedes and the Simple Machines That Moved the World
LINK: HERE
"Give me a place to stand," Archimedes is said to have promised, "and I will move the world." In this perhaps apocryphal quote, the Greek mathematician, scientist, and inventor was discussing the principle of the lever and fulcrum, but he could very well have been describing his whole career. In addition to his mathematical studies and his work on buoyancy, Archimedes contributed to knowledge concerning at least three of the five simple machines—winch, pulley, lever, wedge, and screw—known to antiquity. His studies greatly enhanced knowledge concerning the way things work, and his practical applications remain vital today; thus he is aptly named the "father of experimental science."
Myth of Multitasking – Clifford Nass Research
Link: HERE
In his book The One Thing, Gary Keller sites a 2009 study conducted by Clifford Nass, a professor at Stanford University, designed to determine what made for a great multitasker. The 262 test subjects were divided into two groups. One was made up of high multitaskers. The other was low multitaskers. The assumption was the multitaskers would outperform the other group.
Nass was wrong. It turned out the high multitaskers were outperformed on every measure. While they were all convinced they were great at doing two things at once, the research clearly showed they were lousy at it.
When you try to do two things at once, you either can’t do it or you won’t do either task as well. It is a recipe for losing efficiency and effectiveness. Why? Your brain is hardwired to focus on one thing at a time.

Topic: Business can be Complicated from A.I. to AML
Guest: John Cassara, former Federal Agent
http://www.johncassara.com/index.html
Former Gov't Agent on AML (Anti-Money Laundering), illegal activity by criminals, common forms of AML, and tales from his past working for the US Government, undercover assignments, and giving testimony to Congress.
John's Newest Book:
Money Laundering and Illicit Financial Flows: Following the Money and Value Trails is the first book to take a hard look at our anti-money laundering (AML) track record. Written primarily from a law enforcement perspective, the book examines old and new money laundering methodologies. It exposes threats, enablers, and facilitators. Making the case for an AML paradigm shift, the book offers alternative steps forward. Combining facts, straight-forward explanations, case studies, as well as the author's personal experiences, views, and commentary, this book is valuable to the public and private sectors, policy makers, as well as students and concerned citizens. Now available via Amazon in both print and electronic versions.
Bio:
John Cassara retired after a 26 year career in the federal government intelligence and law enforcement communities. He is considered an expert in anti-money laundering and terrorist financing, with particular expertise in the areas of money laundering in the Middle East and the growing threat of alternative remittance systems and forms of trade-based money laundering and value transfer. He invented the concept of international “Trade Transparency Units,” an innovative countermeasure to entrenched forms of trade-based money laundering and terrorist financing. A large part of his career was spent overseas. He is one of the very few to have been both a clandestine operations officer in the U.S. intelligence community and a Special Agent for the Department of Treasury.
Notes:
Matt had mentioned Ozark. A few years ago John was interviewed by the Ozark producers for a Netflix show promo. Here is the link to the 3 minute promo video. The questions are general in nature and set the stage for what money is and why it is important.

Here is also a link to John Cassara testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee about why money laundering efforts are failing. The testimony might appeal to a business audience. Anti-money laundering compliance costs for U.S. and Canadian financial institutions are over $30 billion a year - about 10 x the amount we recover annually from criminals.
