Building a StoryBrand, book by Donald Miller
Storybrand discusses that familiar story of the ‘Hero’s Journey, and how a business can intertwine this into their marketing material, including the website. You identify with your customers thru their problems – even using common archetype symbols like a villain, guide and an internal feeling to overcome. Customers can relate to the story, and connect with your business as someone who can help them.

Nostalgia in Hollywood Marketing
MB on Sales and Storytelling, Mad Men TV Show Business Lessons from Westworld TV Show (on HBO).
In the Mad Men (TV Show on AMC) episode from season 1 called ‘The Wheel’, Don Draper compares a slide viewer to a carousel, and then a time machine. The slides are taking you back to a better time when everything was good. He talks of the power of nostalgia, and the emotions we carry for the past.
The word nostalgia comes from two Greek words; nostos, meaning “to return home,” and algos, meaning “pain.” In modern times, defined as a feeling of pleasure, and also slight sadness when you think about things that happened in the past. When we yearn for the past, we want to re-capture the magic, the old emotion we once felt.
Hollywood uses nostalgia, even banks on it that viewers will feel old emotions from the past to connect with new movies, merchandize, theme parks, etc. This is why remakes, reboots and sequels are so popular. There already is a built in audience connected to the story. They use a technique in marketing called ‘anchoring’. Something emotional a prospect or client can connect to.
Corporate Brands like Disneyland or McDonalds are famous for trying to create ‘cradle to grave’ clients. These are customers who went as a kid, and bring their kids as an adult, and even later, their grandkids. The Lifetime Value of a Customer could be huge when it comes to all the products and marketing one could consume from t-shirts to fast food, or toys. This creates a marketing synergy between the movie and the merchandize.
The HBO show, Westworld has a running theme of the power of story. The clients pay a lot to enter a fantasy world and be part of the story. Just like Don Miller mentions in Storybrand book, people yearn for the transformation, and experiences or people who will help them achieve this. Disneyland understands this so well, that even the entry to the park is carefully constructed. You enter on Main Street, to relive a better and simpler time.

Cannabis Business Supplies & Real Estate – The Industry Keeps Growing
- BRT S02 EP50 (97) 12-12-2021
5 Things We Learned This Week:
Guest: John Hartsell, CEO & Co-Founder Dizpot https://www.dizpot.com/
DIZPOT is a global cannabis packaging company with custom technologies for highly regulated markets. Headquartered in Phoenix, Ariz., DIZPOT produces millions of packages every month, providing its customers with a single source solution to compliantly and competitively bring products to market.
CEO John Hartsell started Dizpot (pronounced dihz-po) with Jeff Scrabeck in 2017 in Phoenix, but now has worked in nearly every legal cannabis market, including Canada and Mexico. The company has warehouses in Oklahoma and Missouri and an office in Shenzhen, China. Hartsell works with manufacturers in Mexico, Italy, Vietnam, and Pakistan, but domestic manufacturers make up 20 percent of Dizpot's products.
Per Hartsell - A little more than half the medical cannabis packaging in Arizona comes from Dizpot. The company ships 5 to 7 million packages a month in addition to design and branding. One of its slogans is that it's a “one-stop shop” for dispensaries' packaging needs. Dizpot is one of several companies that provides packaging across the country. The supply chain setup takes long planning of 6 – 18 months.
Dizpot provides hard, good packaging, plus branded packaging, similar to grocery store packaging. Because of compliance regulations, needs to be child resistant. They have lots of recurring brand clients in recreational and medical Cannabis industries.
Guest: Bryan McLaren, Chairman & CEO of Zoned Properties
https://zonedproperties.com/about-zoned-properties/

As a certified and licensed realtor, Green Roof Professional, LEED Green Associate, and former City Sustainability Commissioner, Bryan has navigated state regulatory programs for cannabis commercial real estate in over ten markets for over 100 development projects.
Zoned Properties®, Inc. (OTCQB: ZDPY), a strategic real estate development firm whose primary mission is to provide real estate and sustainability services for the regulated cannabis industry, positioning the company for property acquisitions and revenue growth. They recently announced the market launch of its partnership with dispensary retail franchisor (The Open Dør). Zoned Properties invests in OpenDor with franchise model in cannabis using inspiration from McDonald’s as an example & model.
PropTech (or Property Technology) is a term used to define the real estate startups that are offering new innovative technologies and ideas built to re-imagine the core processes and business models of the traditional property management and real estate vertical through digital transformation. Real Estate can become more efficient and scale faster for growth.
Lots of rules and regulations to regular real estate zoning, gets trickier with Sinn type industries – alcohol, cannabis, cigarettes, etc. cannabis business cannot just setup shop anywhere like a Starbucks. Rules dictate cannot put the business near a school, or a church. Legalization has also adjusted what hours the store is open while also stabilizing the overall industry – better tenant with growing business. Cannabis will be a $50 to $100 billion client in commercial real estate in the next few years.

The Franchise Model – Acquiring a Proven Business Model vs Building a Startup w/ Jon Ostenson
- BRT S02 EP49 (96) 12-5-2021
5 Things We Learned This Week:
Guest: Jon Ostenson, w/ Franbridge Consulting
https://franbridgeconsulting.com/
https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonostenson
Jon Ostensen discusses the Franchise industry on multiple levels; from being a broker, to purchasing a franchise, to investing and also the operation side of running your own. He gives numerous examples of opportunities in franchising - How much does it cost, the buy in process, and realizing franchises are more than just food opps.
Jon is a consultant, owner/investor, author (The Franchise Path), and international speaker specializing in the area of non-food franchising. He draws on his experience as both the president of an Inc. 500 franchise system and as a multi-brand franchisee in serving his consulting clients that are looking to explore business ownership opportunities. He serves as CEO of FranBridge Consulting where he helps clients in the process of introducing them to opportunities from the over 300 high growth brands that he represents. Additionally, Jon oversees FranBridge Capital where he and his partners own 18 territories across 5 property service franchises. Prior to FranBridge, Jon was the President of ShelfGenie, a national franchise system with 200 locations.
Notes:
Franchises provide a revenue stream and future exit strategy, as a business owner builds an asset that can sell at a better multiple
Startup vs. acquiring an established business - startups have a high failure rate, and the established business has a track record, marketing model & team with plan and providers
Item 19 – Franchise Disclosure -reviews all relevant info about each opportunity and possible earnings
New franchisee must learn their Customer acquisition cost and have a strategy to work with people, keep talent and then build a community.
Franchises provide Social media and franchise groups to support groups.
John’s Tips for Picking an Opp:
People love their health, pets, home, car, and their kids
House Services – Jon likes Niche Service and Covid and Amazon resistant.
You do not need experience in a niche industry. The Franchise has a Playbook, you can follow.
Look for Businesses that are not sexy, but cash flow regularly, aka a boring business that just makes money.
Examples are:
Property Services , driveway repair business
Floor paving - business and garage
Pool cleaning, Home, Carpet, Plumbing, Insulation
Live and Be local, as in near your franchise territory

Phishing, Malware & Cybersecurity - Try Not to Get Pwned
- BRT S02 EP47 (94) 11-21-2021
What We Learned This Week:
Guests: Vince Matteo, Seven Layer Networks, Inc.
https://sevenlayers.com/
There are many different types of cyber attacks from a password breach, website hack to email phishing scams. Vince Matteo of Seven Layers (.com) gives advice on what to be on the lookout for, tips for protection, and some reference sites for more info. We discuss Email Phishing scams, spearphishing attack, password breaches, website hacks, data breaches, ramsonware, software and VPNs.
Email Phishing – most common type of cyber attack when you receive an email that seems legit at first, possibly from someone you know or a big company, but on closer review the ‘from’ email address does not make sense. Delete these emails, and alert other co-workers you received it, as more staff may be under attack. The goal of these emails is to get you to reply or click on a link to get sensitive or password info. Your info or email can be sold on the Dark Web (anonymous server or chat).
Password Security – always good to update passwords, and make sure they are not easy to discover using combo of words, numbers and signs. Programs like Last Pass are good for keeping track and securing your passwords. Also using private networks (VPNs) when going on personal or important sites like banks, credit cards, etc. , or use 2 factor authentication log in (code sent to an email or phone).
Vince Matteo is a certified penetration tester, a security researcher, and a senior consultant at Seven Layers (.com) where he focuses on securing small businesses. Vince is the author of "Hacking 101 – A Beginner’s Guide to Penetration Testing", he's a bug bounty hunter with 17 published critical vulnerabilities, and he's presented talks on offensive hacking at security conferences -- most recently GrrCON in Grand Rapids, MI and BSides in College Station, TX. Outside of work, Vince is an accomplished endurance athlete, an Ironman age group champion, and in his spare time, you can find him in the desert -- training for the next hundred-mile ultramarathon.

Guest: Steve Zabilski, Executive Director of St Vincent DePaul https://www.stvincentdepaul.net/about/our-board Homeless Population in Phx Struggling and How to Help Help to Feed, Clothe, House, Heal those who need it most
Steve Zabilski has served as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Executive Director since 1997. Prior positions include senior vice president with Transamerica Insurance Group and audit manager for the accounting firm KPMG LLC.
Steve Zabilski embodies the philosophy of serving those in need. And appropriately, he is well-situated to live out those precepts of charity as CEO of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Phoenix, where he oversees the day-to-day operation of the organization’s 250 employees and thousands of volunteers throughout Arizona.
“We are a place that provides opportunities for others to be of service and this provides real meaning in our lives; a sense of purpose, a peace and joy that comes from having a reason for being that which is greater than ourselves,” professed Zabilski.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is dedicated to feeding, clothing, housing and healing individuals and families in our community who have nowhere else to turn for help. As important, SVdP provides meaningful opportunities for volunteers to serve their neighbors in need with love and compassion.

Big Data, AI, + Psychographics – How Amazon, Google & Other Big Tech Keep You on Their Platform
- BRT S02 EP 45 (92) 11-7-21
5 Things We Learned This Week:
Guests: Manuj Aggarwal
https://manujaggarwal.com/ / https://www.TetraNoodle.com
Manuj joins BRT to talk about engineering Big Data and AI for growth, to give us actionable insights from data, cyberspace, cloud adoption, on customer analytics & psychographics. So much of tech is inter-connected from AI to The Cloud to data analytics to solution architecture, and design in Software
Manuj is a 20 year tech consultant with an extensive background in software and AI. His resume is vast, consulting, tech, software, patents, author, courses, and more. Manuj is originally from India of humble means, worked thru the Dotcom Bubble (lost his job), and now runs his own company, Tetranoodle with a office in Canada. The clients list is a who’s who of tech, including Microsoft, IBM, and ING. His company has grown from 5 employees to nearly 30 in the last 2 years. You can also listen to his podcast – Bootstrapping Your Dreams, and a YT channel with business advice.
Cloud Computing to process data has changed the game on Data. We don’t need huge computer anymore. Moore’s law has shown that computers get faster, while costs come down. CPU Processors are very fast and use 1 computer vs. many computers in a room in past.
Algorithms of today have gotten smarter, doing things that could not be done 20 years ago. AI/Algorithms are always improving, learning, they try, then fail, and learns more. It gets faster, and better. This model is 100x smarter now than years ago, and goes deep on data mining.
Netflix, FB, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Google/YT – Tech company’s track all your data, create your profile and serve you what you like and connect you with others of the same interest. Then they feed more interesting data. This is done thru their Recommendation Model – ‘you bought this, so you’ll like this’.
The power of the FB lookalike audience – take 500 people on your list, and can match 1000 characteristics of 2 billion FB users. Tech uses Psychological tricks to try to keep you on the platform through notifications, messages, emails, and more tracking.
Per Manuj, the news over-blows the big tech data topic. We all use FB, Google and other tech sites for free. The price is your data. This data is being organized to enhance your experience and help you. Privacy – people usually do not comprehend how data privacy really works and constant trade off to use this technology. Manuj is working on projects to use AI to bring people together – tech can help bring people closer and get new opportunities. People adapt to tech and new jobs – future of work.

Taxes Are Going Up - How to Grow Your Wealth using the Right Tax Buckets
- BRT S02 EP44 (91)10-31-2021
5 Things We Learned This Week:
Guest: Denver Nowicz, President - Wealth For Life http://wealthforlife.net/
Denver Nowicz is an advisor with nearly 20 years experience working with clients in investments and insurance, designing retirement plans with a combo of both. He takes us through different strategies for clients to get the best allocations for their money over the long term. It is the Combo Strategy of both Offense and Defense, the synergy of the mix, not ‘All or Nothing’.
He discusses the proposal for the Biden Tax Plan and how it will affect people, business, and real estate investors. Corporate rates, Estate Exemptions, and Real Estate rules are all on the table.
Defense – Why defense is so important, and how Insurance strategies can help. 3 to 1 Matching – one of Denver’s favorite strategies thru insurance, more for upper level earners who have a long term horizon
Tax Protection – Tax Buckets, broken into 3 categories of taxed (income), tax deferred (401K), tax free (Roth), understanding the differences, and where your funds are currently, and options thru insurance products to move more $ to a tax free position.
We also talk about Executives, and what strategies can they use to handle taxes, investments, & retirement. The standard retirement plans (IRA, Roth IRA, 401K), what is a 401K, and the deferred tax setup in the plan (and recs take company match on 401K). We shift to why business owners have more options and benefits and what are they (Acquire assets, stocks, real estate, invest in business).
The 3 Tax Buckets – income, tax deferred, tax free, and understanding the 3, and tax protection – move more $ to the tax free position. When you have Assets – rental real estate, cash flowing business, IUL, you can use them for tax benefits. Create your own Exit Strategy as if you sold the biz you worked for, and get the benefits of 3 to 1 Linder Match. What is the strategy of Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos with Tax Free Loans?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) – how the Algorithm Connects Us All
- BRT S02 EP43 (90) 10-24-2021
5 Things We Learned This Week:
Guests: Naru, CEO / Founder of Inventives (formerly Aptus AI)
https://aptusai.com/
https://www.linkedin.com/company/inventivesai
https://www.linkedin.com/in/naru95/
Naru returns to BRT Show talking tech, software, and AI. His team is always developing new applications with AI in healthcare, finance, biotech, & aerospace. Naru shows how so many technologies are connected and what the future of business looks like.
Inventives is the new company, with the same core technology team, but focusing the business into a venture studio by creating new AI projects for companies not yet using AI. Inventives new projects can become spinoff companies with this new technology. They work with B2B clients and also Investors for these types of companies.
Radiology is a current project to enhance the patient experience using AI – called SKIP. This project is on the Operations side to make the patient process of paperwork, payments, etc. to be automated (& efficient) with AI working with the patient. This will be stand alone, but if adopted by other medical offices over the long term can streamline the healthcare industry.
Naru and his team are working on document management, where their AI program will be able to read documents and determine what the info is. Rising Cloud is another project they are building that manages a company cloud usage to improve costs.
Moore’s Law – Each year computing power grows 2x as fast, but cuts the cost in half
Cloud Computing happens in the cloud and internet for your programming vs Edge Computing that happens right on your phone and does not need to go out to the cloud. Bigger the data request or process determines if Cloud or Edge is the best choice.
People interact with AI (Artificial Intelligence) daily on their phone, email, internet search and beyond. User Agreements in your phone or websites you use say they can take your search data and use it to enhance your experience.
AI Search uses past searches by you, vs what are the popular other searches by other people on the internet. It happens so fast and has the best / popular search options loading before you are even done typing. This is called a Recommendation Engine, just like Netflix or Amazon find shows or products you may like. These recs are similar to what you have watched or bought previously, or in similar genres.
The downside is you may not see different options, just more of the same. AI determines what you see daily on the internet, and can create a silo effect. Inventives uses a common solution, called Human in the Loop to review what the AI is doing. Then the searches or recommendations are reviewed to see how accurate they are.
Healthcare AI is assisting doctors, and even finding issues that humans have missed in a radiology study. AI has no bias, and does not get tired. The computer can repeat processes and be consistent.
Key technologies of the day are constantly overlapping – AI, Big Data, Cloud, SaaS Software, etc. This tech can work with each other, and new software can build on top of these applications. Open AI created a product with AI that builds AI software.
Naru’s Software Teams have different backgrounds of math, engineering or physics who are self taught on software and think more about the solution vs thinking in terms of coding. There are small groups of 2 to 4 people in a team with a Solutions Architect running the small team and determining how the software interacts in the bigger picture.
Often some of the best software involved very small teams. Lot of testing and compliance control goes into to creating big software projects that can involve multiple teams. Same issue if building an upgrade to a software that merges with the previous version.
Rewind Clip – Replay of a segment from Naru’s last appearance on BRT in 11/2020
He talks AI and the morality of the technology. How can a programmer control their product, and what it will be used for in the real world. Naru chose the name Aptus because it is Latin for Apt or Appropriate – design products that works for the clients
Chaos Theory / Jurassic Park – Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should
Aptus gets defense contracts as sub-contractor of companies partnered with military. Aptus studies the end applications for what they are requested to build, to determine if they will take the project. Morality is considered, but not always applicable to see where a product may go until it is built.
AI software is programmed to build more software, AI building more AI. Per Naru there are companies trying to develop AI weapons that can kill on their own, and robots being controlled by AI already. Aptus has Liability Insurance to protect their projects.
Bio:
Inventives / Aptus AI is a software solutions and artificial intelligence development and consulting firm. They provide aerospace, mechanical, and software engineering services to companies around the world. The Team is strong, and well-rounded consisting of engineers, developers, and physicists that focus on solving problems at the root. They help take ideas or concepts and build prototypes and deployments in very short periods of time with tight budgets while maintaining the best quality and client satisfaction.
