  • Episode 107: Hawkeye by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
Back in July of this year, Andrew got the chance to chat with writer Kelly Thompson about the latest Hawkeye series. The comic stars Kate Bishop (some would call her the better Hawkeye) and focuses on her return to Los Angeles and her second go at being a private detective. Since that interview, Andrew has been dying to do an episode of BIB on this series. Sammy finally got around to reading the first trade and even suggested we do an episode on it. Andrew hoped this would lead to an in depth discussion about the book. What follows is not what Andrew hoped for.
Listen to the latest episode of Back Issue Bloodbath where Andrew makes many points about how great this Hawkeye series is while Sammy repeatedly makes the same point on why he thinks it’s not. The episode is funny to say the least and harkens back to the Steve Trevor incident. There is praise for the artwork of Leonardo Romero and Michael Walsh, as well as a review of the story so far with Madame Masque, Aggregate and Kate’s Father. There’s also Sammy saying the word purple A LOT. Take a listen and enjoy…….Andrew sure didn’t.

  • Episode 106: Nerd Rage
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
Comics are suppose to be fun. But somehow, fanboy and fangirl rage always rears it’s ugly head to ruin this fun. Sometimes it’s relatively harmless. Sometimes it’s toxic and can lead to creators and fans not feeling safe. Last year, we did an episode on fan entitlement. It focused on fan anger when a certain franchise or character is not portrayed in a way that some deem “correct”. That’s part of the rage problem in comics but it’s just the tip of the iceberg. What’s even worse is that some fans are getting angry at POC and LGBTQ+ creators and threatening their lives. There’s so much rage and it’s not a good thing.
This week on Back Issue Bloodbath, Andrew and Sammy address the rage problem in fandom and try to figure out why it’s there. Some rage is warranted. Most is not. Criticism of stories is a good thing, as long as it’s constructive. If you’re hating on someone just because you don’t like their story, or worse, their gender, race and religious beliefs, that’s not cool. Listen as we discuss the Keyboard Hulks that need to turn back into Bruce Banners sooner rather than later. It’s waiting for you on the latest Back Issue Bloodbath.

  • Episode 105: The Works of Denny O'Neil
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
When it comes to superhero storytelling in the 1970s, there was no better than Denny O’Neil. The man had a major hand in making Batman and Green Arrow great. With artist Neal Adams, he re-introduced Two-Face, brought back the murderous Joker and created Ra’s al Ghul. He turned Green Arrow into a social justice warrior and sent him cross-country with Green Lantern to find America. While being known for his writing chops, he also stands out as prolific editor, working with great writers and artist throughout the 80s and 90s to bring us a number of great Batman stories. He’s a living legend in the comics world.
Take a listen as Andrew and Sammy pay tribute to the works of Denny O’Neil. We look back on his stellar run on The Question. We even attempt to figure out why he never quite clicked with readers on his Daredevil run. All in all, fun times are had as we relive some great stories on another edition of Back Issue Bloodbath.
For more on how Denny (along with Neal Adams) renovated and restored Batman following the campy 66 show check out Glen Weldon’s The Caped Crusade: Batman and the Rise of Nerd Culture. You can follow threads of Denny’s Bat-work that lead to seminal tales like The Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, and Batman: Year One.

  • Episode 104: Green Arrow by Benjamin Percy
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
If you’ve been a long time listener of Back Issue Bloodbath, you may have picked up on the fact that we love Green Arrow. Both Andrew and Sammy are big fans. The Green Arrow series launched last year has brought new life to this great character. (Thank you Rebirth!) Written by Benjamin Percy with artwork from Otto Schmidt, Juan Ferreyra and Eleanora Carlini, the series has combined elements from the pre and post New 52 worlds seamlessly. The book marks a return to GA’s social justice warrior stance which has been missing for many years. Black Canary’s also back in the mix, adding to an interesting supporting cast to back up our chili-loving hero. (Yes! He loves chili again!) There’s also some great new villains mixed in with old favourites (like Clock King and Merlin to name a couple).
This is the book that longtime Ollie Queen fans have been waiting for. Join us as we cover the copious amounts of awesome that is the current Green Arrow run. This series is right on target and we plan to talk about it in our usual fashion on an ALL NEW Back Issue Bloodbath. Take a listen and enjoy your life.

  • Episode 103: An Interview with Conor McCreery
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
Back Issue Bloodbath is lucky to call Toronto home. A number of comic creators live in the greater Toronto area and many more pass through this city on the regular due to multiple conventions and events throughout the year. This gives us great access to creators. One of those creators is Conor McCreery. Best known for his work on the Kill Shakespeare comic that he created with Anthony Del Col, Conor has gone on to write many a tale in the KS world, including a Juliet miniseries released earlier this year. He’s also had the pleasure of writing for comic series like Adventure Time and Regular Show. He’s a funny guy and a skilled hand when it comes to a compelling story.
Andrew caught up with Conor at Fan Expo Canada this past September. Conor’s become a good friend of the Geek Hard family and always has time to talk comics with a fellow geek. Listen as they talk about Juliet and the Regular Show/Adventure Time crossover comic. And stick around to hear Andrew and Sammy talk about a new restaurant idea that Conor pitched to Andrew. It’s all fun and games on another great episode of Back Issue Bloodbath. Come for the comics. Stay for the food.

  • Episode 102: Moon Knight by Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
If there is one character that Sammy Younan has been dying to do an episode on, it’s Moon Knight. This week we satisfy that desire by bringing you our look back on the 2014, 6 issue run of Moon Knight written by Warren Ellis with artwork from Declan Shalvey. This series debuted shortly after the Brian Michael Bendis/Alex Maleev comic wrapped up and it did a great job of doing something different with the character. There are those that feel that Moon Knight is just a poor man’s Batman. Instead of hiding from this, Ellis leans into the fact by creating the “Mr. Knight” persona, a new personality in Moon Knight’s mind. Mr. Knight is a great detective who secretly works with the New York police department to solve unusual cases. It’s the stand out addition to Moon Knight’s character from this short run from Ellis and Shalvey.
Listen as Andrew and Sammy go over the finer points of this series as well as talk about Marvel’s problematic marketing practices. Fans are tired of constant relaunches and new number ones. Moon Knight’s popularity might be affected by this style of publishing. Another reason for this could just be the character has a niche fan base. Take a listen to the latest Back Issue Bloodbath.

  • Episode 101: Superhero Costume Changes
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
Do the clothes make the hero? And if that’s the case, does a change of threads make a character better or worse? The costume change is a staple of a superhero’s journey in the world of DC and Marvel. No character has ever been left alone. There have always been tweaks and additions to every character’s uniform throughout the years. Some have even had complete overhauls of name and appearance. The Superhero Costume Change has become both a moment and excitement and dread for fanboys and fangirls over the years.
Join us this week as we take a look at the superhero costume change. Which ones are our favourites? Which ones do we wish never happened? What’s the reason behind some of these redesigns? All of these questions are touched upon. We even get into the age old debate on which Wolverine look is better: Blue and Gold or Tan and Brown? There’s also an attempt to figure out if The Wasp has a definitive costume. Who’s to say, really? She changes her costume almost every issue. It’s a fun time looking at what heroes wear and if we the fans care on an ALL NEW Back Issue Bloodbath.

Whether it be Marvel, DC or any other publisher, there are some characters that changed the course of the funny-book business when they first showed up on the spinner racks. Sammy’s approach is very much out of love. Andrew takes a more “historical impact” approach, citing what the characters did that made them stand out above the rest.
