Back Lot 605 episodes

  • Escape Room: HIMYM Edition

Welcome to Episode 10 of Back Lot 605. This week as always we talk about the Box Office for last weekend. There was a bit of a surprise with ‘Escape Room.’ It was able to break the top 5. No small feat considering the films it was up against. We talk about that later.

Disney drops an update on us for the up and coming live-action Dumbo. We did not get a new trailer or see new footage. What we did get, were some new movie posters. For being a Tim Burton film, these are some pretty bright posters.
Aquaman continues to reign over the January box office taking in First place. This puts the latest DCEU film as the highest grossing one yet. Hopefully, this gives insight to Warner Bros. and how to continue to proceed with the DC Extended Universe. Danny DeVito and Awkwafina have both joining the cast of Jumanji 3. They join the already star-studded cast of Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, & Karen Gillan. Tony Hawk went on record to say that he was tapped by Warner Bros. a few years ago to make a follow up to Space Jam. This new entrance into the Looney Tunes Universe was going to be the start of a shared universe. Tony’s film was to be aptly titled Skate Jam. When Back in Action failed to please movie goers, the plan was scrapped. I for one would have loved to see this come to fruition.

We delve into the movie of the week. Escape Room. What did we think. What could have been done. This movie was ripe for the beginnings of a new modern day horror villain franchise and missed the mark.

  • Aquaman: The Waterboy 2

Welcome back to Back Lot 605! This week it looks like we are still riding the comic book movie train. Episode 8’s main topic is Aquaman. Does he live up the expectations or does he do a big belly flop into the sea?

    On Topic

Happy Holidays everyone. Due to the holiday we recorded this episode early. Because of this, we were not able to provide the box office numbers on the podcast. However, you can check out the opening weekend numbers for Aquaman, Bumblebee, and Mary Poppins Returns here. Instead of box office numbers, we take a dive into the critic and fan scores for these films.

Bumblebee is the highest rated Transformers movie, with a Tomato score higher than Aquaman. Both franchises have not exactly had the best track records, but still bring in big box office numbers. Mary Poppins drops in for the sequel decades too late. Second Act and Welcome to Marwen are tanking in the box office.

Hollywood dropped a couple trailers on this week. We had the opportunity to get not one, but two new Men in Black: International trailers! Both of these previews to the movie prove the type of chemistry that Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson really do have.

The Hellboy reboot trailer leaks online, with Lionsgate releasing the trailer a day later. What did the guys think of the David Harbour lead reboot? We get the first look into the “human” version of Will Smith‘s Genie for the upcoming live action Aladdin. As well as the first look at Princess Jasmine and Abu.

Hobbs and Shaw get a new title, Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spin off on their own and get an official release date of August 2nd, 2019. Fast and Furious 9 gets their official release date of April 10th, 2020. No official word on title.

  • Talkin' Spider-Man

Welcome to Episode 7 of Back Lot 605.  As always we discuss this last weeks box office.  Spider-Man takes number 1 followed by ‘The Mule.’  Have you heard of the film ‘Mortal Engines?’  Sounds like most others haven’t either as it had a horrible opening weekend.

Why is Benicio Del Toro doing the voice of Swiper in the live-action Dora the Explorer?  Scary Stories to tell in the Dark gets a release date and we ramble on about Guillermo Del Toro.  Casey can go cuddle with the rabbits.  Maybe it is because he is scared of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Casey talks about when he got to see Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse. Don’t forget to check out his review for it.  With that, we jump into our main topic of one of Stan Lee’s greatest creation.  Why was From Dusk till Shaun, not a thing?

This week we bring you our thoughts on Spider-Man in his on-screen glory.  What was our favorite Spider-man movie and what was our worst?  Who played the best Spider-man?  Who plays the best villian?

We would like to also advise that after this was recorded, Welcom to Marwen is now coming to Sioux Falls at the Century at Dawley Farms.

Don’t forget to check out our Keloland Living segment where we talk about Christmas movies for the Sioux Falls Film Community.

  • Avengers Endgame & The Golden Globes

Welcome to Episode 6 of the Back Lot 605 Podcast.  As always we went over the weekends box office.  Unfortunately, there was not much really to talk about.  No new movies came out and the standings stayed pretty much the same.

This week we discuss a couple of big trailers that dropped.  We were presented with the new Captain Marvel Trailer and the First Avengers 4 Trailer.  The Russo Brothers finally delivered us a title.

A trailer dropped for the new film Brightburn staring Elizabeth Banks.  This looks like if Superman’s origin story was a horror film.  Also about as fast as Kevin Hart was in as the Oscar host, he is now out.  This was thanks to a couple of old bad tweets.

We look into the newly released Golden Globe Nominations for film.  It seems that some of the choices seem to bend the idea of what is a musical or comedy.  It is ‘The Martian‘ all over again.

The upcoming releases are ‘Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse.’ We also get ‘The Mule,’ and ‘Mortal Engines.’ Netflix drops Roma. All of these release on December 14th.  Mary Poppins Returns releases December 19th.

Don’t forget to check out Fat Dude Digs Flicks.  Also, we will be talking Christmas Movies on Keloland Living on Wednesday, December 12th.  Also, keep using those hashtags #ashesforoscar & #twoschmucksinabasement.

  • Episode 5? Where is Episode 4?

Welcome to Episode 5 for Back Lot 605 Podcast.  In this episode, we discuss what happened to Episode 4.  A podcast that will always be stuck in our heads.  We look at the box office again.  Who took number one, did anyone fall short?  Did anything come out this week?

This week was a little rough at the box office.  Nothing really came out this week.  The Possession of Hanna Grace releases to poor numbers but still beats Robin Hood.

Harley Quinn gets the title to her movie and the Lion King gets its trailer.  The Captain Marvel trailer drops but we hadn’t seen it yet.  It’s pretty amazing!!  We discuss BFI and their stance on villains with facial scars.

This episode is about Christmas movies.  We discuss some of our favorite ones and ones that are just bad.  Die Hard is a Christmas movie! And in typical fashion, we randomly go off topic.  Did you know that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Arnold “I’ll Be Back” Schwarzenegger are in a movie together?  Did you know that Santa Claus is red because of Coca-Cola?

The upcoming releases are Once Upon a Deadpool on December 12th.  We hope that this PG-13 release of Deadpool 2 allows for Celine Dion to get an Academy Award for her song Ashes.  Ryan Reynolds and Dion, how much more Canadian can you get?  Unfortunately, Anna and the Apocalypse releases but doesn’t come anywhere near here.  Locally there is nothing independently showing.

We would also like to plug another local podcaster.  You can check out Fat Dude Digs Flicks.  Unfortunately, Brian messes up the name when he is plugging him.  He will get it right eventually.

  • Stan Lee

Welcome to Episode 3 for Back Lot 605 Podcast.  In this episode, we discuss last weeks movie box office.  Who took number one, did anyone fall short?  Was Brian or Casey able to predict the correct box office numbers from last week?

Brian gives his take on David Yates film ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald‘ and Casey provides his thoughts on the Netflix movies ‘Cam‘ and Ethan and Joel Coen‘s ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.’  They discuss the upcoming ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It stars Millie Bobby Brown of ‘Stranger Things‘ and Vera Farmiga of ‘The Conjuring.’

YouTube recently started offering free movies with ads.  You can find a nice comprehensive list at Reddit.  You can find classic movies like the Rocky, The Terminator, Hackers, and The Man in the Iron Mask.

They give their thoughts on recently released trailers, Jared Leto teases Morbius,  A24 partners with Apple for exclusive content.

They remember Stan Lee and provide their thoughts on his film cameos throughout the years.

We return for an episode of Back Lot 605.  Today we talk about last weeks numbers.  ‘Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch‘ takes number 1 at the box office.

We pay tribute to the loss of Douglas Rain who passed away at the age of 90.  The man who gave us the voice of Hal 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey.  (NY Times)

Casey and Brian discuss the possible future Jay and Silent Bob Get a Reboot.  With some of the struggles that Kevin Smith has had with trying to make sequels to existing properties, it lies to question if will see the light of day.  AMC is making a direct sequel to Breaking Bad starring Aaron Paul.  Where does the movie go with how the show ended.

Casey discusses how Robert Englund had made a treatment back in the day that could have been ‘Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Freddy’s Fun House.’  Would have this treatment been better than what was made, who better to know Freddy than Freddy himself.

We are getting sequels that do not have characters and stars returning.  It has been confirmed that Taron Egerton would not be reprising his role as Eggsy in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming sequel/possible prequel.  Common is not coming back to return to John Wick 3: Parabellum, even though he was a fan favorite.

Disney announces the name of it’s streaming service.  They look to roll out new original content directly to the service.  Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role of Loki for a series on the service and Captain Marvel will be the first MCU film to stream on the service instead of Netflix.  Diego Luna gets to reprise his role as Cassian Andor for a new Star Wars series.
