We are back for Season 2! And, it is our 1 year Podiversary! Thank you to all of you for listening and supporting us. We are so excited to start this new year with more romance-related shenanigans!
To kick it off, we decided to watch a movie that is beloved by many--just not us, James Cameron's 1997 epic, "Titanic". Take your Dramamine and get your floaties on and enjoy this amazing discussion of this watery love story. Did we mention, we only watched the last half of the movie?
Moral to the Story: White, heterosexual love survives.

Mallory was 10 years-old when she first saw Titanic and Kate Winslet was the first movie nudity she ever saw.
We both really hate this movie.

Class distinction hasn't changed.

What a fitting end to this, sparkling first season of Bad at Love Podcast. Mallory and Tamu discuss an interview Keira Knightley had with Ellen where she talked about banning her three-year-old daughter from watching Disney movies like The Little Mermaid.
Moral to the Story: No matter how problematic the subject, it can be viewed and discussed in order to better understand it rather than banning it.

Happy December! There have been heated discussions between Tamu & Mallory about the holiday movie, Love Actually and whether it is actually problematic. Luckily, when Jim and Ben were in town, they graciously agreed throw their hats into the ring regarding this "controversial" holiday film.
Moral to the Story: Love Actually can spur debate.

For Halloween, Mallory & Tamu watched Fatal Attraction and talked about the controversy surrounding film's ending. Unfortunately, they neglected to Google the original film ending at the time. So today, they watched the original end of the movie and it was startlingly different.

Moral to the Story: No roll in the hay is worth hurting yourself.

Tamu and Mallory read Trisha R. Thomas's Nappily Ever After and compare it to the Netflix adaptation. Let's just say there were high expectations which were sadly not met. However, both the book and movie are pioneers for moving natural hair into the mainstream; hopefully the next movies and books about natural hair will be even better.
Moral to the Story: We are beautiful regardless of what comes out of our heads.

We watched the Netflix documentary, "City of Joy" and learned that sexual violence has been used as a weapon of the armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 1996. Women in this region continue to be raped, mutilated and murdered for conflict minerals (Tantalum - aka Coltan, Tungsten, Tin, and Gold) that are used in our cell phones, electronics, cars, and jewelry.
City of Joy has been opened since 2011 and empowers the women who have been brutalized, to learn new skills, love their bodies, release the stigma of being raped, and become leaders in their communities. 1117 women have graduated the program since it began.
