John Lilly had a dream. He knew dolphins were smart, maybe almost as smart as people, he knew that dolphins could communicate with each other, and he knew that dolphins sometimes mimicked human speech sounds. If they could communicate each other, maybe they could communicate with us. Maybe the could be taught to speak the English language. Maybe if THAT happened they could send a representative to the United Nations. So that's what John Lilly set out to do. And THEN things got WEIRD.

Elizabeth Holmes was supposed to be the next Steve Jobs. She was supposed to save us billions in medical testing and move us into an era of self care and diagnostics the likes of which we had never seen. Instead she became the millennial Madoff and stole billions over technology that never even got close to working.

Pyrrhic victory is a term that means "we won, but maybe it wasn't worth it?" Today on Bad Ideas we go back to the original Pyrrhic victory "won" by Pyrrhus in the Pyrrhic War. Greeks against Romans! Elephants against horses! Wisdom against weapons.

The USS William D. Porter, or Willy Dee as it's sailors called it, was the most incompetent ship in the fleet during World War 2. In accidents that would include accidental depth charge explosions and accidentally sending a torpedo at Franklin Delano Roosevelt, you can see why this particular ship ended up on Bad Ideas.

Network Olympics coverage is terrible, and has been for a long time. These days we can get around that with internet streams of of the events as they happen, but in 1992 if you wanted to watch the Olympics you had to watch NBC's delayed overproduced feed. That is, until a New York company had an idea: Why not bring the REAL Olympics to America's living rooms, live and uncut, as a pay-per-view event? This this the story of that idea and how it failed.

John Chau was a young American missionary who found out the hard way that trying to bring the gospel to isolated and uncontacted tribes might be more dangerous than expected. Once he set foot on their beach wearing a speedo and throwing fish, things started to go very wrong.
